These days we see that the city based people
(Chennai/Bangalore/Coimbatore..etc) are patronising
ARR/Haris Jayaraj (and Deva to some extent).... younger
generation is popularising these MDs' music among
elders also by repeat play at home and at TV,,
While IR's songs are typically played/requested in
AIR or some FM stations in Singapore/Malaysia etc.,
But I see that cities/towns like Trichy, Madurai,
Thanjavur dist are still playing IR songs in most
of the buses/tea shops/public programs/places
and even local tv channels like Vaigai etc are
playing IR's compositions regularly..
Even 5-10 years back it is the districts which
brought such a fame to IR songs.. even now they
are sticking to IR.. while City culture is changing
the prefs to ARRs and HJs..
these are all IMHO..
any views..

I have been reading these threads - these are my first comments - I totally agree with Saval on his comments about IR. IR has been concentrating on number of films he gets and not on quality of songs. I also see a distinct liking of IR for nature and animals as most of his songs are like 'then pazhani mayile / kuyile' nadanvana kiliye /nilave etc. '. He also has utter disregard for good lyrics and good song writers.

Mahabs,
Most IR's recent songs are trash. We can count his recent good songs on our fingers.
Some of the trash songs :
- where IR uses singers like Bava are mostly trash where the singer cannot stick to the pitch - even IR sometimes finds it difficult when he sings.

Krish,
In your esteemed opinion, does this include `Bharathi' also?

Some of IR recent songs are good, some very good, but unfortunately the trash songs out number good ones.
I am a very ordinary music lover and in my opinion of Bharathi - some songs are good - esp. Nirpathuve/but what Bava has sung is questionable? Did it really warrant an award?

I'm not an authority to write about awards & neither I do care about them much. But I don't think that song itself is `questionable':-) It may not be a `ninnukkOri varNam' but a nice, simple, village song...the voice is for a small girl, remember, which is quite appropriate. In that album, this song definitely provided `variety', which is Raja's fort.
If people start calling `mayil pOla' trash / questionable etc., I don't know what they really expect Raja to produce...

2001 being silver jublee year for IR he desperately looked for some great offers to show he is still around...Sorry no one with big budget came forward....Friends songs were recorded in 2000 itself...But you guys can not deny the fact ARR and Harris present their moderate products very well on screen...They really enrich their music value on screen That's why Tenali and 12b songs became big hits after release...With traditional approach finding no takers it is sad IR did not get any worthwhile assignment this year

krish
i do not agree with you. i admit that three or four years back raja's average songs outnumbered his good ones. i won't call them trash.
but, for the past two years atleast his good songs are more. and people nowadays expect something from him again.
and ir no longer bother about good assignments. i heard that for kutti he didn't charge fee. if the story has an appeal to him, he gives good music.
