lotsa musical concerts are being held these days all over the world by (tamil) music troops as well as by MD's
as far as i have seen,i feel that not in a single concert was ARR's music reproduced properly (except for his own concerts like in Dubai,Los Angeles etc..)ARR's songs are all messed up if they are being reproduced on stage by someone else.....even his drum beats are made to sound like *tarai tappattai*.......they r really sick
y is this the case with ARR's songs alone and not with other MD's.
does it suggest that ARR relies too much on computers/electronics??
If he does,is it healthy for TFM??
or is it purely the quality of music and the musicians who work with him??
how is he alone able to reproduce the same music on stage??
this in no way relates to the singers who sing the song.....only the beats and other stuff

Yes if u have the samples, then u need MIDI events to playback (with a sequencer). Or you can record the entire sample and play once.

Kiru, I think I differ from u. Even Rhythm emphasises on accent. (thats why u wud hear the bass drum and the bass guitar playing together at the same time in most of the rock music). For that matter, accent is one of the reasons why we would get a sense of timing in a Rhythm. And for the same reason, we have the concept of syncopation.
"the percussionist and the singer should be playing/singing live to do 'micro-adjustments' along the way"
And Rhythm (to be strict, I mean timing) need not not be just from the percusionist/percussion instruments. It cud be a piano (incidentally, Piano is also classified as a percussion instrument), guitar, or some other instrument. So even musicians other than percussionists wud have to make adjustments along the way. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but I was thinking that we get reverb and other effects with hardware, than with a software. I use a pedal for those things.

Kishmu, I donno exactly if I agree with u when u say theres no emphasis on reproduction. But I wud add that the emphasis would also be on what the audience hear when u play, in addition to playing live. And that wud bring up the issue of how ur instruments are miked. Miking is of paramount importance when u do shows of Arena size. Most of the live shows I atended/saw on video go with thier experience on this aspect. As far as I know, there are not many of our film music shows to an audience of 50,000 plus. Also our film music doesnt stick to one genre, MDs are expected to do different things, or get themselves branded as uncreative and repetitive. So its a tough job to get all the different instruments (esp percussion) to sound perfect across the whole stadium. It wud be tough (but not impossible) to get a live mridangam and a tabla and a drum to sound right and in balance with each other across the whole stadium, but it wud be easy to play a CD with the same music of mridangam, tabla and sound correct, over all the stadium. And with varying dynamics (volume levels) of each instrument within a song/show it makes more work to do. This cud be one issue with Rahmans live shows and why he resorts to pre-set tracks. These are my views, let me know if I am wrong.

Sam..thAlam is synonymous with percussion instruments (thALa vAdyam) in indian music right ? I think there is a difference between indian music and rock/western pop. If you see indian music and tamil literature they are tied together. For example, the beats/thAlam are predetermined once you write the lyrics. Maybe the song could be sung in different rhythms but the thAlam is fixed. This is because there is supposed to be a beat/half-beat for every 'asai' ( asai is a unit of sound like say a long sound like 'bA'). These musical concepts are DEFINED in our culture, even though they seem to be universal concepts.
I think this is one of the reasons MSV/IR switch to tabla/mridangam in the charanams even if they a new rhythm texture in the pallavis, again my theory.
I do agree with you that even in rock music I see the accent by the drum and bass guitar..but is it systemised as in Indian classical/folk music ? Any opinion from others. I think this is a basic concept I want to get it verified.

sam you are right. mixing for hall and mixing in studio are different. but this doesnt mean u have to playback a recording. you can still do wonders with playing live - be it mirudangam or tabla.
if u use looped/recorded tracks mixed precisely, it is difficult to reproduce these exactly on stage - this is what i meant by reproduction. Rahman *heavily* relies on those and so he is scared to play it all live. Only the unplugged version sounded authentic. Rest were **** . I could of course hear some real bass...

I had the pleasure and honor to be a part of a music team that was put together (the event was named ROSHNI) to do a multi-lingual light music program aiding SANKARA EYE FOUNDATION (details about the show and artists was/is at http://www.sefusa.com/roshni.htm). The program was a huge success. We have been getting raving reviews about this program.
Thanks to all people who made it to the show, who were always very supportive throughout.
It was a great lineup; even I found it hard to believe that the songs came out exceedingly well - a fact that is so untrue of a light music program. Usually, in my experience of playing in LIVE light music programs so far, I've always observed the standard pattern - which is
- 10% of songs are fantastic
- 20% of the songs are very good
- 20% of songs are good
- 30% of songs okay
- 20% of songs bad
But, in this program, almost 95% of the songs were very good to fantastic (this was not just my observation as a performer, but a collection of tons of feedback that have echoed the same feeling). Its very very rare in a light music program where all the singers were of high quality and most importantly DELIVERED their stuff on stage. Audio and lightning were great too (mostly audio is where things fall apart because no matter what you perform, if the audio engineer does not understand the basics and react), then the whole thing goes down the drain.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable experience to have been a part of this great music program. Needless to say, this program has boosted the level of performance so much (by an amateur team), that one person went on to say it was better than even an SPB light music concert. What more can be better? The team of instrumentalists and singers were just fabulous...
Again, thanks for being there and showing your support to the music team and to SEF

VK: With VK, Krishna, and Harinikesh's participation (among the people I know) and their commitment to excellence, I am not surprised by the quality of the output at all. Thanks for raising the expectation and standards for future orchestra programs. Good luck in all your efforts.
I have to share this feedback from Harinikesh (a professional drummer with a very impressive resume and skill to match it). On the group and VK in particular, "indha aLavukku live music vaasichchu, rasichchu pala naaL aachchu. Chennai la kooda indha aLavukku, adhuvum notes illaama memory lErndhu LIVE Keyboard vaasikkaravaa romba kuraichchal"
Proud to know you VK!!!!

RajaG: I am glad to have such compliments from good musicians of the calibre of harinikesh (and ofcourse you). It gives me (and other performing artists) a chance to take ourselves to the next level. And its real fun to work with like-minded people sharing the same interest - music - which we all breathe and we all try to do to perfection (not to mention the little improvisations here and there); ain't that fun?
HariNikesh is in a class of his own; He was clearly the binding glue in perfecting the pieces that fit together. It was great to perform with him. I would love to keep performing with such talented artists like him and yourself (if given some opportunitunies). Infact I am looking forward to more such associations.
Let see what the future has in store of all of us.

ARR uses drum pads and samplers (its a machine which can be programmed with a few key combinations to produce variety of beats in a loop) and of courses he uses a lot of key board. Moreover he synthazises voice tracks heavily. On the stage, he uses karaokies and drum pads and some of the singers even lip sync on the stage. Believe it or not, I have seen this myself and a lot of others also noticed when he performed a show in new york last year. Hariharan lip-sync'd almost all his songs. So there you go..
