IR and BR in Manasthan

I read the news item that IR and BR have joined together in a movie named ironically as Manasthan.
If BR's recent moves were successful or IR's recent compositions were successful i doubt this joining together of old friends wud never have taken place. I think these two have joined together to bring their sagging popularity back up. Whatever happened to all their spleen splitting venom which they gleefully poured over each other when they split ?

  Statements like rasanai has gone down, etc are merely excuses. Isn't it the same IR who came up with singaari sarakku..., kattavandi kattavandi...and so on? Rasanai has 'changed' would be more appropriate.
  
  Raja's name and fame mainly came from his ability to churn out hits after hits. It's no longer the case. Sivaji Ganesan was a big star then. But he can no longer give hits. It is not that he has become a bad actor.. just that people's tastes have changed.

  But a Mouna Ragam or Agni Natchatram would remain longer in the mind rather than TajMahal. How do u measure a song's popularity ? By the number cassettes that they sell. If that so then MR and AN would have been flops because even a lowly placed ARR movie cassette would have sold a lot. Because of changes in ppl's life styles. I would rather rate popularity by how many ppl still humming the song.
  Nobody hums "Thirupachi aruvala " or "Athe athe athe.....".

  We are talking of IR of today. Should compare IR's and ARR's current compositions. Popularity is not measured only by cassette sales (though it would be a strong indicator). Things like number of radio requests, what's playing in tea shops,patti,thotti,etc., would also factor in. MR and AN were definitely popular when they were released. I don't think anyone would consider them to be flops.
  
  As regards a song remaining in the mind longer, it depends on the person and the generation to which he/she belongs. IMO, People who are in their 50's consider MSV (MGR, Sivaji Period) songs to be great whereas people in the 20-30's are more passionate about IR. I think we are all nostalgic about songs which we heard when we grew up (adolescence). Kids of today would probably consider ARR's songs as alltime greats..who knows maybe even Deva's work!

  U got that one right comments. Today's youth would and are finding IR's music too slow i suppose. ARR's suit their beat needs.

  Mr. Karthi you are already above 30's, you are not consider as youth so might love MSV-R music old songs.
  
  In the new millenumum their songs are out dated can't able to survive around with youths. I am 19 yrs, for me their songs are very diffcult to play.

  I see myself saying the same stuff 15 yrs from now...
  I'm in my 20s and after some 15 yrs, some one in the same DF wud say, Raja's songs are liked by only those who r in their 50s, and I wud say the same thing :-)

  I just tried to point out that different generations like different musicians. Didn't mean that everyone in their 20-30's will like only IR and hate all others.
  
  BTW, Karthi whom would you choose between IR and ARR?
  
  And how come most (NOT all) of the discussion in this forum is about IR, ARR and singers used by them?

  I dont think IR's music is slow in general. I am listening to 'AttamA, thErottamA' now and man how fast-paced it is. I am pondering on ARR's success.. so far I have come up with 'novelty', 'urbanish/westernised' as the differentiating factors. His target audience is also the audience with money in their pockets and that helps in album sales :)
