Q- "....a lot of the damage to current Hindi film music — both in musical content and picturisations, like the 100 extras — has been due to South Indian film influence?
A - It is unfortunate, but I agree with you wholeheartedly. At the same time, please do not count me as one of the responsible parties.

Peter Pan -
I enjoyed reading your post. What surprises me more, is the wonder that you have not been put through the shredder (yet) by the "tamizh pattru police" lurking here in the shadows (not that I wish it upon you, as you tell it like it is, and that is all but rare in these forums)...And more power to you, is all I can say!
Your suggestion regarding Screen is an interesting one. Why not trim the above post, tighten the paragraphs a touch, and send it to Screen yourself? You did have a "letter of Resistance" in mind, correct? Or were you thinking on the lines of full-fledged critique? I think Maragadhamani's interview is symptomatic of the Bombay superciliousness, and could well serve as an entry point for your piece. The post from you has both, (near) historic sweep and a good dose of rightful indignation. I'd be glad to assist you with the "proofing/editing" aspect, if you so require. Please let me know.

Kaumudi, Naaz,
Thanks for the feedback.
Naaz,
Since my writing skills are indeed limited, I suggest the following:
Why don't you take my posting, edit it, add your own thoughts and we can together send it?
Please email me.

Peter Pan -
I don't know why you're so self-effacing about your own writing? It is pointed and pertinent, besides being perceptive and accessible.
Also, you grasp of the current TFM/HFM bloopers is more comprehensive. I have to be pulled - kicking and screaming - to give time to the top 10 lists!
So, I repeat: Your thoughts are relevant. Your writing is fine. Your resistance is a breath of fresh air!
Now just get one with it, will ya?? :-)
(Of course, my offer of proofing still stands. Here's where you will find me: naaz99@yahoo.com

hmm..I always make it a point to read the interviews of MDs. maragathamani is selling his credibility for gaining acceptance in the north. He does not even have the backbone to say anything positive. All because hindi market is bigger and they pay big money.
Peter Pan, I am not aware of the goings on in the Hindi film music (or even tamil films to some extent :)) but I think our northern brethren do not represent the majority there. People who are in business/work there mostly seem to hail from well-off upper class. They have the typical feudalistic attitude along with an ignorance of the south. We should never take these people seriously. Politically, I think, TN parties, should never become part of any National fronts/alliances but provide support to a central govt from outside. This is the only way the southern states are going to get a due share.
I do think the Bombay film world has really talented people, who in the present and specifically in the past have contributed to evolving cinema in India.

a digressive word ont he great singer Kumar Sanu which is a hilarious pesonal one - One of my room mates was hearing the song 'tu mEri zindagi hai'. Usually very tolerant, I vehemently started to rip off sanu verbally getting irritated by his nasal voice. After listening to me for a while my freind remarked :
'paavam vaayillaa jeevan paadaradhu..vittudEn'.

I agree with Naaz, PP and K..mudi. When you say that my favourite music director is somebody from south they consider us like somebody in 19th century. When I told somebody that I did not hear Devdos songs, they were giving a dirty look as though I am an illiterate. It does irritate me a lot. When my lil one (3 years) was singing "Mayil pola...", our guests said "God...dont make her like you...let her be upto date in the fashion and style...", I did not understand a bit of this statement.
