i know this is terrible nit-picking, but the first two lines from "En sOga kathaiyaik kELu thaaikkulamE" were straight lifts from a comedy song in KB's "noottRukku nooru".

Hi everybody
Regarding the issue of 'Diana Diana..' in Kathal Kavithai being copied from a recent Deva song--I disagree.
Infact the first two lines of the pallavi starting 'Nee thoongum/urangum koyilil..' or something like that is similar to another Raja song from the movie Poonthotakavalkaran--'En Uyire Vaa, En Uyire...'
Please sing these two lines one after the other and check it out!

"Kan malargalin" has tremendous influence of "Money Money" by ABBA.

Vijay,
I have been following this thread with a genuine interest in knowing the songs that IR is said to have copied... and as you said, have not seen more than 3 instances of copied numbers. (Remember, this thrad is one of the longest...) There was digression all the time and I found that many postings were to do with the comparison of 2-second sound-bytes of different songs and calling them copies!
Just the other day I was playing the 'Aruna Kirana' song to a North Indian friend of mine and he said that the starting piece was from a popular WC number and generalised that IR is just one of those guys who make money on recycling WC tunes. (He was the same guy who believed that ARR copied 'Pyar Hua Ikraar Hua' from Shree 420 in Muquaba Muquabla!!!! and I had to prove him wrong)Though I was in no mood to educate him on South Indian Music scene, and particularly IR, I was keen to know why he felt so. When I asked him to name the WC number, he simply said it was from Vivaldi's 'L'estate (Summer)' from 'The Four Seasons'. I knew for a fact that both were no way related, so I played him all the pieces the next day and he agreed that there was no similarity. I told him to check his facts right before blindly accusing anyone of plagiarism.
Now he listens to many of the RealAudio numbers in TFM and is kind of hooked to MSV and IR's music.
Ok, why am I saying all this? Well, my request to the contributors to this thread is: Please check your facts right before you post and instead of saying "this song reminds me of 'something'" mention clearly the sources in your postings so we all are 'enlightened'.
Many thanks,
Neels

Neels and Vijay,
I have been following the thread for the same reason- to find out the songs that are alleged to be lifts. So far(that is since July 97, when this thread was started ) not more than 2 -3 songs were proved to be lifts.! ( and this out of the 4500 + songs !!!!!!. )
But i kind of understand why some people revive this thread every other day .. It's quite Obvious. Is'nt it ? !! ( take a look at the main page - Hot discussion topics ). Once this topic goes off that list, just wait a day to see this thread revived w/o any real news.)
Cheers
MSK

Neels,
Excellent point. I hate to put it this way but what the heck, occasional doses of reality is good for one's soul. I think most people post in the DF to satisfy their personal egos (and give vent to their otherwise unpublished feelings) and the wonderful world of internet has provided just that. In my formative years, I used to listen to "morons" crib that all western sounding songs were copies, but these people never ever substantiated their claims with evidence. My point is not to say that IR did or did not copy and hence he is not or he is great. But 90% of this thread has been filled with useless crap and has not stuck to the topic of discussion. I sincerely hope that this is the last of the 'non topic' posts.

Geetha :
I am quoting you :
"IR too has been 'inspired' many a time, by the Great Western Composers, like Mozart and Bach.....He HAS 'plagiarised'-(copied a FULL song and said that it was his own) in Darling Darling Darling(Priya) from Sunny (BoneyM), Pon Malargalin
Irrupidam from Theerthakaraiyinilae e.t.c..... "
I do not know any "Pon Malargalin Irrupidam" I assumed it was "kaN malargaLin azaippidhazh" from a late 1970s movie.
I listened to the song yesterday along with the ABBA song and as Sridhar Seetharaman mentioned, the melody of the song is inspired by the beginning portions of ABBA's 'money money money' song. Of course Raja adds his own superb orchestral touches.

Please do not compare IR's talents with any one's. Even if you prove he has copied a song from any other's music you can still feel his magic touch in that song.
Can you compare any song with that of Geetham Sangeetham or KAlai Nera Poonguyil. We cant even imagine such great compositions from any one else.

Me is curious as to which "2-3 songs" were finally declared to be "copies".
Is "Darling,Darling" from Priya among them?

I might have told this some in other thread.
I was listening to the elton john song grey seal, and the pallavi of the song 'vallavikkum kadhalaku jai' sounds exactly like this song and also IR recycled this song from 'enna venum thinnugoda' from uyarndha ullam. It may be not exact copy, but
the inspiration is failry obvious.

I do agree with easwaran in regard with the plagarism of IR. IR's music piracy is being disclosed by everyone now. There a lot of tunes, he has stolen from various albums. His copied music are just like a highway robbery in day light time and how dare you IR guys to claim ARR is lifting the tunes while your IR is still shamelessly doing that.
ARR's music is a best fit for any generation.

The final list is just '2 or 3' songs because
most of you so called IR advocates conveniently
ignored most of the ones that were raised.
Nobody is trying to prove here that IR is not
GREAT - he is great, but this thread was specifically started to show how great people too sometimes tend to do mistakes.. there is no need
to 'pughazhthify' IR every now and then - anyway
it is being done left, right and center in all other threads..
And alleging that this thread is being revived
often for no obvious reasons is amounting to say
that it is OK if somebody revives a thread which
praises IR, but it is a sin if somebody revives
this thread ?

mr. also ran,
which were the tunes that were conveniently ignored? can u prove that the songs were copied? can u list down the notes for the original song and the duplicate? u have to be specific, authentic in your info before accusing someone of IR's stature of copying. iam not defending IR. in fact i myself contributed some songs in IR's copy aditha paadalgal thread. but don't make statements like this without backing up with sufficient info.
the trend i have seen in this thread is that people just pick one or two syllables from a song and say that this has been copied from that and so on. can u list atleast 5 songs of IR out of 4000 or so that have been complete lifts?

Hi Guys,
I happened to listen to one of IR's old movies---"Manippoor mamiyaaar".in that one of the song--'samayal padamey' resembled the song in "unnal mudiyum
thambi"-"samithu parug...."
I felt bit strange to see IR remaking one of his old songs.
any comments?

Yes RB,
I feel that he has recycled the tune only to familiarize. As you know "Manippur mamiyar" was not at all released.
