i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.

Yeah its the n'th time I'm reading this reason. You can have 1000s of reasons for an inspiration and this is just one of them. Whatever the reason might be you could listen to the songs and conclude the inspiration. No offenses meant. The excuses can be put forth when someone is in for a fight. I'm not.
BTW...I knew that the Deva song 'kiss me miss' from Kalloori Vaasal is inspired by a song by 2 Unlimited. Which song was that? Could anybody help?
Similarly, the ARR song from Karuthamma 'thenmerku paruvakaatru' is inspired in part (the rythm loop) from a Dr Alban song. Which song was that?
I just unearthed something really tragic! My all-time favourite Deva song was actually a telugu song in the movie 'Tholi Prema' (dubbed as Aanandha Mazhai in tamil). The song was 'e manase' sung really well by SPB. Just found out its source! Its a Dr Alban song by name 'alabalaba' (this word appears even in the telugu song!!!) from his album 'Born in Africa'!
I'll post the clips as soon as I get them!
Devaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!

As far as "Kanavu Kaanum" song from Neengal Kettavai - I think it is a known thing that IR traded rights to reproduce his Ilaya Nila with the hindi MD in return for reproduction of Kasme Vade in tamil. This has been discussed several times in TFM

The piono movements in the song "Hello Mr edhirkatchi" (movie- Eruvar) is a direct lift
from an english song. Will post the link soon.

There is nothing called copying. It is just an inspiration.
In classical music you hear a lot of songs with similar tunes, which are from the same scale. People go about it because Classical music protocol warrants a discipline in the usage of certain fixed phrases in each raga. I dont understand why the same thing does not apply with film music.
IR was inspired with BoneyM and composed 'Darling Darling I love you in Singapore composing location. 'Vaan Maegangaley; is nothing but an ulta of Aradhana SD Burmans 'Koraka Gaztha ye man mera", 'Pudhumappilaikku' is confided by IR as a copy of 'Naan Parthathiley' by MSV.
Music director Vedha did justice by using even the BGM and original Hindi tune. That way he is great and deserves respects.
Dont blame Deva alone. Blame all the copiers.

S: So can we say that Deva/KR/ARR/YSR/SAR/Anu Malik all copied because of the insistence of the directors ?

What are the similarities, if any, between "Odakaara Marimuthu" (Indra) and "Maarimazha peyyadho" (Uzhavan)?
Same metre? Same tune for the first line?(though I strongly doubt that!) Same raga?
Why is it that the songs sound vaguely similar or it just music-illiterate me?

ragu.
what makes u think 'Van megangalE' is a copy of 'gora kagaz'?
i dont' think 'pudhu mappillaikku' is a copy. One would'nt have found this out - without IR confiding. that's about 'pAdal pirandha kadhai'.
even for devar magan, kamal asked IR to compose a tune in the line of a SDB's song. he did and moulded the song so much that kamal at the end saw no resemblance to SDB's. the song is 'inji iduppazhaga'. (source: one kamal's intv in DD)

haris,
"One would'nt have found this out - without IR confiding."
I think some of the lawyers can adopt this technique while defending their intelligent clients.Say,a person performs a perfect murder and no one finds out for a long time. Then the person himself turns himself in.
The lawyer can appeal "If he hadn't turned himself in you wouldn't have caught him so you have no right to accuse him".
I don't know why the lawyers are not intelligent enough to adopt this innovative idea.
"even for devar magan, kamal asked IR to compose a tune in the line of a SDB's song. he did and moulded the song so much that kamal at the end saw no resemblance to SDB's. the song is 'inji iduppazhaga'."
When Deva was asked why did he copy a particular song of ARR or someone,he says "the director asked my music should sound like ARR or someone to become a hit".

Raghu
I thought 'gOrA kAgaz tha' inspired 'kOvil maNi Osai' in, A Train going East.
Kitcha
ARR re-uses his 'sandham' a lot. Some examples are:
ottagathe kattikkO (Gentleman)
nee sirichchaa deewaanaa (Bombay)
kappal Erip pOyAchu (Indian)
pachchaik kiLigaL thOLOdu (Indian)
kaNNaik kattik koLLAthE (Iruvar)
suthi suthi vandheeha (padaiyappA)
rOjA rOjA (kAdhalar dhinam)
kAdhal ennum (-do-)
This is ONE of the reasons why his songs sound similar.

Coincidence happens only by chance. If the chances occur repeatedly then it is no more coicidence, rather it is described as "recurrence".

If I had known I would be getting so many responses(missiles) I would have pretended to work a little more time.Anyway,
aruLaracan,
I think I know what IR said in that programme when he was talking about how "Pudhu Maapilaikku" was intelligently created from "Naan Paarthathile".I would not classify it under cheap imitation. But clearly it cannot be glorified in the sense of a truly original composition.I was pretty much reacting to haris's posting.I couldn't understand the later part of your posting.
"mediocre song nAn pArththathilE"
In that program if I remember correctly IR acknowledged that song to be a good song and he was enthusiastically explaining the composition of that song. But of course you are entitled to feel it as a mediocre song.
Analog,
"It may be just a coincidence"
"Did ever Rahman admit from where he suttified his stuff?"
I've never claimed ARR's compositions are 100%original.But just b'cos IR has admitted he has used certain songs in certain situations doesn't mean he is completely clean.
"Why he never admits?"
He already doesn't have time to accept more than 25%(just a approximate number, could be less) of the projects he gets due to his composing speed. So,I don't think he has time to do a TV program like IR in the vein of "Paadal Pirantha Kathai" series running for weeks.
GR,
"What does ARR say when asked why he copies?."
Next question -)(just kidding)
I don't know if anybody asked a question so directly to him.So I wouldn't know his response.

Trend, sometime back, someone asked ARR - "Chaiyaa Chaiyaa" seemed to be lot inspired from some other song (don't know which one), for which ARR responded "may be its just co-incidence"..... (not sure if its the same wordings, but he meant it)..... so its upto u now to decide.....

Here's one real solid proof that he does! The song 'velai velai' in Avvai Shanmugi has parts of it inspired from a song by 2 Unlimited! Guess what the song is called? Its 'Workaholic'. Ippo sollunga, Deva'vukku english theriyumolyo?
