In a press conference yesterday given by Karthik and Yuvan shanker Raja, they said that they [Ilaiyaraaja, Karthik, and Yuvan shanker Raja] have jointly produced an album titled "nenjinilE" for a Singapore television channel. This album has 40 songs with lead models appearing. Ilaiyaraaja alone has composed 8 songs for that album and the rest are done by Karthik and Yuvan. The songs are folksy, rhythmic and melody as well, to enable Singai singers to sing along. The songs have been penned by aRivumathi, muhamad ali and iLangO.

I can not help notice that there is no discussion of the movie `kannukkul Nilavu' songs. I thought the songs were very catchy, sort of like `Kadhalukkku mariyaadhai' songs and are bound to become blockbusters. Good for Ilaiyaraja!
I would like to hear what others think.
Also are `Sethu' songs good?

Varthai thavarivittaai is a must listen from sethu, otherwise nothing to say about that album, raja has spoiled the songs with wrong choice of voices including the number enge sellum.

What about Yuvan ? poovellAm kEttuppAr was good. I also think IR with Yuvan doing the mixing will be a very good thing. Listen to poovellAm kettuppAr. The recording sounds as good as or similar to ARR's songs. I still think IR has not made the switch to using drum machines successfully. The sound is very cheap (I am not talking music aspect of the beat).

ECHO,
I assume you are another ARR fan. There are few good songs like 'Malaiyil Vedhanai' 'Sikkaatha Sitrondu', 'Kanak karungkuyile' are good apart from few more songs which are which are not much to rave about.
Kiru,
I agree with you. IR recording is poor. I don't hear the base guitar and drums as I hear in ARR, YSR or KR songs. I believe YSR/KR should mix the songs for IR songs. I am not talking about composing tunes but only recording them
Regards

Why should UK sing all the songs ? vidiya vidiya song would have been a hit if it was full and had rendered by a diff voice. kathirikkai song lyrics....:) raja should have tried somebody else for the song enge sellum, though he has done it decently. Malai yen vedhanai absoultely good, but y there is ambi thambi stuff? it spoils the whole song.
and u guys have discovered good logic to identify the fans, :)
Kiru, u r 100% right, recording q and the lyrics are the weak park of his music, thats y the ppl have pushed him in the corner!

Regarding recording quality, enough has been discussed earlier and for IR,his musical abilties
speak for themselves more than the recording quality.
Anyway I did observe that the recording quality in the cassettes of Sethu,Time and Hey Ram that I have,is excellent and I didn't find anything wrong.Especially the cassette of Time had very good recording quality.
Regarding lyrics,I have always believed that Raja doesn't require great lyrics for his songs as his music takes care of everything. And anyway I can't imagine people like diamond writing lyrics for him with their eyes and ears shut(which is how they write great lyrics for ARR like
Shakalaka Baby ... ).
I guess Echo belongs to the so called unbiased
group of music lovers who find everything in ARR's
music to be excellent and find almost nothing in IR's music good.

Dear Echo,
What many fans feel here is that Engey Sellum can be rendered so soulfully and fitting the film so much only by Raja! I think you people should hear the song with the film! I know you all will never relish Raja's voice but you have to agree that Vaarthai and Engey are 2 songs that have made the film so effective - Thisa word is supported by all people not only His fans! To all people who say Sedhu music is bad, I'll say that once more Raja has proved that He is a musician to the situation and doesn't overdo it! It appears so to you as the songs are not catchy numbers like ARR stuff but they well hold Raja's mark!
Regarding the recording quality I can say that IR doesn't need anybody's help! It is sometimes the fault with the audio tapes, so don't blame Him! Otherwise, all is good in the recording!
Yours Always,
Vijay.

Some body was saying KR's recording is good.
In one way I think its his negative point along with singers rendering. He has made a mess out of
kadala kadala and nameruvar .. .
He makes some echoy, bass effect etc, voice and makes it unclear and worse. many of his songs didnt have reach because of this. Better he keeps away from IR. YSR i think will be a good choice.
May be they hire a good guy for this job may be from abroad is necessary.

I felt really pathetic about our producers and director who used Illayaraja for fame after reading a gossip about Illayraja in Dinakaran.

Actually, I think even though KR's recording is good, he just throughs in instruments with no proper arrangement and that makes the songs sound pretty wierd. Plus, as pointed out, his choice of singers leave a lot to be desired.

Actually, IR, Deva and Anu Malik seem to have the right digital equipment/instruments. I think ARR is making a difference in mixing the various tracks. If my suspicion is true, it is pretty pathetic that only ARR in the whole of India is able to get a signature sound which others cannot replicate/duplicate.

ARR investing more money on the synthesizers to get more different sound and the diff beat, mixing is so good in his songs, originality... who cares now? the urgent thing raja needs is a good sound engr! see the malai en vedhanai song is recorded without the noice reduction. guys listen to the song after disabling the dobly b nr of ur system. what more needed to kill that beautiful tune? but cass. cover says, boasts it is recorded at arr's tent.

I think the Dinakaran clip must be correct as he has started taking up more modest assignments..this probably corraborates the alleged finacial difficulties he finds himself in..Let's hope he comes out of his difficulties..
However, like every cloud has a silver lining, this will ensure that Raja will be concentrating more (i.e. not just on the musical content, but also the correct formula for success) and will be at his competitive best!

The Hindu's review of Kaakai Chiraginile says:
"Ilaiyaraja's background score and the use of flute and percussion provide a scintillating melodious session. The background beats in the scene where Vadivelu takes a gullible crowd atop a hill to show ``god'' to them, for example, makes your ears perk up in fascination."
I've not seen any review that praised BGM scores of other MDs. Only Raja makes them sit up and notice!

kk!
The Dinakaran gossip says Raja has turned so humble that he calls the movie production offices for new assignments! The ones who pick his calls, bewildered, keeps asking many times `Raja, who, which Raja, really etc.'! They can't beleive themselves...Hence he has changed his beginning now, like, `I'm ILAYA raja here, who did music for your previous film, when is my next assignment...':-(

DINAKARAN is a stupid newspaper as far as cinema section goes. They would write any 'CRAP' to sell it. Cuz if they didn't, they would hit the street.

Reg. the lyrics. I was listening to
Thatharam Mozhi[GURU] while enjoying my rainy evening, an amazing song by IR, and I was floating in the sky... as the song was mesmerizing me. I was praying, just before the song ended, by any chance this should not come to Tamil, then some "kavignar" will mess up the beauty of the whole song. Now its not a problem as long as I don't know the language, J! LYRICS MATTERS as long as u know the language, the deeper u know, greater it hurts!

In the movie Kaakai Chiraginile, IR provides wonderfully tuned songs in Simmendra Madhyamam, Mayamalavagowlai, Kiravani, Kaapi/Desh, Sindhu Bhairavi; and all the reviewer for Hindu has to say is how appropriate some little piece of incidental music for a comedic scene was... brings to mind Pope's immortal phrase "damned by faint praise".
