IMHO it will be none other than legends Viz.,GR,MSV,KVM & IR.
The songs which are performed in the inter college cultural festivals are songs like sangeedha megam, ilamai ennum poonkatru , Ilaya nila etc.
You can hardly hear any song of ARR or the latest stuff.

...on iduppu chaela madipula naan kasangi ponaane...
isn't it, 'nee kattum chaela madipula naan kasangi ponene'? (from Pudhiya mannargal?)

i didn't read all the previous postings; but here is my opinion for whatever it's worth (2 cents? :-) ).
nobody's. what time scales are you talking about? 100 years? 1000 years? 1000000 years?

hihi:-) thathuvam baa!! how about this..
Is there not something trifle absurd in the spectacle of human beings holding a mirror before themselves, and thinking what they behold so excellent prove that a Cosmic Purpose must have been aiming at it all along? ...only abysmal self-complacency can see in Man a reason which
Omniscience could consider adequate as a motive for the Creator.

The 30s, 40s and 50s are slowly fading from people's minds.
The 60s and 70s are still strong.
Only time will tell whether songs of the 80s and 90s will continue to attract people.

Obviously ARR. He wins hands down!
When was Shankar a cream? He became 1 bcos of ARR. So, the logic doesnt hold.

Aadhavan (@ 203.106.70.179) :
I disagree with your point here.
>>The 30s, 40s and 50s are slowly fading from people's minds..
I can think of many reasons for this.
Foremost, the people who have listened to the somgs of 30s and 40s and now very less.I mean many of them are no more.
The people who have witnessed the releases of those film songs of 50s and 60s are still alive and have probably heard much more of the songs of 30s and 40s than many of us here. But definitely many of their inclinations would be on the songs of 50 and 60s,(because it was their period) compared to the oldies(according to them). Its the same case with many of us here, when we say oldies of TMS and PS.Many of us like them but more inclined towards the 80s 90s and the IRs and the ARRs (and HJs of these days...).
So as such there is nothing like an MD who stands the test of time...just because taste fifferes from time to time. Its natural to occur.
To emphasise more on my point:
I still remember my grandpa saying that"Men may come and men may go but GR and Papanasam Sivan would stay for ever in our memories because of their wounderful creations.."
My dad had said this many times.."IR, ARR whoever.. but MSV is the true Chiranjeevi of TFM, theres not one area of music he has not touched.."
the arguements go on like this as the ages differ.
(NOM to any one...)

1930s and 40s songs first of all very less nos. are there. Only from the film association we could get the lyrics and sons and all. 1950s to60s is a starting period to get melodies littlebit from original carnatic based ragas. 1970s and 1980s MSV has done wonderful job. Then comes our great masterio IR sir.
As the family only, as the generation passes by each and everyone in their generation is great. But when we compared the 1960s to 1980s of msvs and irs they both to be very pure at times in ragas and later for the greater melodies they added some intermittent notes to give extra attraction to the songs.
So which MD IS best?? does not come here. When u take to ARRs music also some western notes are more thats all. Repeated song melody we can hear in his tunes mostly. I didnt crtiticise him.
Like Isaipriyan, great music lovers they can easily identify the copy of bgm. Some in olden days have not been hit. So with a light change in it if it is done, now its becoming very popular.
Idhuvum oru nalla thalaimurai pol than isaiyum. Adal idhil yar greatnu irukave irukadhu.
so many great tunes have been done in those days my EVERGREEN MSV SIR!!! on those days they doesnt have the modern equipments also. So we can say that their music is great. but still as ages differs as the mds differs. ,,, thodarum

Deva Sir, Rahman Bhai, YSR sir, Manoj-gyan sirs, SAR saar & Sirpi saar's songs will be REMEMBERED forever.
Only the above MDS' songs will stand the test of time.
G. Ramanathan, KVM, MSV and IR stand no chance!
