MGR's actig not all that great ? You are a generous man. It was rubbish. MGR is an actor with no talent but a visionary who knew what he wanted & how to get there. The first man to use cinema to get to power. Intelligent thinker but acting ???
Which film of Sivaji would u give a national award for ? I am a fan of Sivaji too but if u had to pick one ? Why don't u start a new thread. This thread is about something else

You are being very unfair. The persons who receive the national awards (honours) like the Padma awards are picked by a panel appointed by the government in power at the Centre, not by the president. At the present time, the only state that has practically no clout at the Central government is Kerala. Chandrababu Naidu from Andhra (SPB's home state) and Karunanidhi from Tamilnadu are in the ruling coalition at the Centre. Jayalalitha is trying to replace Karunanidhi in the NDA. Kerala has no BJP MP-s or party supporting the ruling coalition in Delhi.
Your statement was an attempt at trying to impress some of the posters on these threads, but it was a very cheap, unwarranted and unfair shot.
I usually do not respond to reduculous statements, but could not keep quiet this time.

Sivaji chose not to play the "sucking up to the higher ups" game, GR. Some artistes believe in their art more than they believe in awards. A good, appreciative audience is enough of an Award for them!
If u are complaining about Sivaji not getting Padmavibushan, Bharat Ratna (he deserves these IMO from what I've read about him) because of NORTHIE POLITICS, then I would like to draw ur attention to the fact that he did win a Dadasahib Phalke award (though it was late).
Please correct me if I am wrong.

GV - If you read my post again, I mention very clearly that KJY deserved the honour he finally received. I was only pointing out that MERIT alone does not "naturally" lead to these honours. There has to be "lobbying" on the part of many other people - and if they are influential - so much the better. Only MERIT alone, one rarely stand a chance (especially in the performing arts.)
I have served on a few film festival juries myself and know the workings of the beast. There are "unsaid" but "heard" regulations of "quotas" "minority representation" "linguistic parity" and such parameters that the jury is "advised" to keep in mind.
Only a couple of years ago Pradip Krishen and other jury members resigned from the Indian National Film Festival Jury - and accused the minister (Sushma Swaraj) of arm-twisting and "preferential" tactics. They (the members of that jury - 2000, I think) even gave a press conference where they quite explicitly said that the entire "award" process was "rigged" (that was the exact word they used). This was covered extensively by the Indian national newspapers in English (the ones I read).
So, I was not taking any cheap shots - I was merely pointing out the aspect of "corruption" that is very much part of the system - from top down.
I hope you can better understand the context of my statement now.

GV- Hi again -
Just as a cross-reference (from another poster here - Peeps):
<>
So, I could only be Happy IF the current Indian President put in a strong word on behalf of KJY (as you said - Kerala has no representation at the Centre.) At least, the Honour was a long-time coming for a pre-eminent musician such a KJY - and it did!

GV - the above quote was snipped - here it is:
"If you take a list of the people who got central governement awards, more than 60% of that list are people who have political influence or have supported the governement in one or other way..Gone are the days where awards were given for merit or excellent performance !!..
Things are totally different nowadays.. "

Thank you for explaining the context. I understand:))
Cheers!
