Rate your singers Voice

1) Dr.SPB - The ultimate voice, with a heavy bass
2) Dr.KJY - Second to SPB, but not as versatile as SPB (infact no singer can match SPB)
3) TMS - Strained High Pitched voice, often sounds nasal
4) M.Rafi - Neither too heavy or too thin, good voice
5) Ghantasala - Similar voice to SPB's
6) Dr.Balamurali Krishna - another similar voice of Dr.SPB
7) Hariharan - Nasal voice, suits sad songs well
8) Unnikrishnan - Soft voice

  dear friends,k.l.saigal was considered best singer in india even by rafi. later it was rafi in north and ghantala&tms in south spb should not be compared with ghatasala or rafi he had no stability in his voice till the age of 35 its only after sankaraabharanam he could establish his own style of singing (as he said many times ).of course is a versatile singer and cn sing 1-37 keys .ghantasala also can do that .padya gana is an art which spb couldn't render as tms or ghantasala .mere variety is not singing the singer should touch the hearts ofthe listeners .in this respect he is next to his predeceessors .earlier he used to imitate kishoreda later rafi &ghantasala. it is kvm msv &illayaraja who gave him his own way

  My votings:
  
  1. Dr.KJY - Divine voice, incredible bass Excellent at base medium and high pitches. The versatility stands in the upper end :
  
  Classical/devotional/romantic/melodious.
  (as vetrivel mentioned)
  
  2.Dr.SPB - Flexibile voice, excellent range, great modulation for the lower end:
  
  Romantic/melodious/fast/dabbankuthu.
  
  3. Rafi - Great noistalgic voice, superb in the middle and high octaves. Stands low at base.
  
  4. Ghantasala - Good range, thick voice.
  
  5. Dr.BMK - Good voice suiting classical songs only.
  
  6. Unnikrishnan - Beautiful voice though nasal. Stands good at medium octaves.
  
  7. Hariharan - Good at base, good for low paced songs/ghazals. Sounds nasal and feminine at high pitches.
  
  8. TMS - High pitched nasal voice, good for patriotic/sad songs.

  Hi, Guys! An interesting discussion! To me, Ghantasala is the greatest of them all, Rafi following very closely. These two singers are just incomparable and let us not compare them with other singers. SPB is my favourite singer though I recognise KJY has a better range then SPB. I have heard practically all of SPB since 1967 (Paramananda Sishyula Katha - where he sang few verses) and always look forward to hearing his songs. I saw how P.B.Srinivas, the sweet singer, faded when SPB entered the field.

  lol, who are we to compare those great singers. If u ppl really love music and can distinguish between different voices and tunes, you should realize that everything is the same. Some say SPB, some say Ghantasala, rafi etc. The answer should come from them,....not us.
