In the long run, can it be possible to mobilise the best talents among Indian students to form a TFM troupe? If this is possible, then we can have more frequent performances at various Indian associations as they can support these programmes and we don't have to think hard on how to popularise IR's songs especially. If this idea is debatable in this forum why not we ask for talents attending in this forum itself? These talented musicians/singers should be extremely good so they don't have to meet regularly to practice it is also opportunity to display our latent musical skills. After few years, we can get lot of supprt and invite TFM legends to be guests. I am thinking we wont have problems because Indian films in general don't have copyright issues.

IR's music can be made popular by him first speaking in the musical language that the foriegners like, then only his native compositions can be wedged in. Right now, only one three musical forms he has attempted: Film songs, Fusion non-filmi album, and Symphony and perhaps some New Age. If we want to see IR gain acceptance outside these are the following ways, Mr. Ramani please note and see if you can convey this sincere petition to the Maestro:
First, stop composing for films
Second, work on more popular forms of music like Jazz, New Age (a good example is India 24 Hours even though it contains traditional sounds, it is made in a breakthrough new age style!) or even western style romantic theme music
Third, work with famous musicians and bring out music only for specific instruments. Best posssibilities and match for IR's genius - Wynton Marsalis for the Trumpet and Jazz, John Williams for Jazz or Classical Guitar.
I am giving this a lot of thought and I honestly feel that it is time IR moved out from beating the dead hores of Indian film music and start working on other more acceptable forms of music for the world to first recognize the genius of IR and then the rich treasure of 60s, 70s and 80s TFM.
This is really the issue and us singing TFM in the USA is not going to help us spread IRs film music what with even the perfection we can achieve in conveying the sounds of limited orchestration to a first time audience.
So, I am requesting Mr. Ramani to make a note of this and give us his feedback here and also somehow convey this to IR. We want IR to not waste time in Kummi Pattu (trash) or even Manam Virumbuthey Unnai (superb but went unnoticed amidst the new cacophony of today's crappy film music. I hope Indian film music is done with sooner than later. Honestly, I am tired of hearing the concoctions and contrived nonsense.)
Madhan, Srinath, RajaG(most importantly) please let us talk about this here and now.

Hi Ramani,
This is your old pal Chandrasekar from St.Josephs Trichy. Remember the Festember 1982 (writer Sujatha was a chief guest) where St.Josephs (you were in REC that time) bagged the over-all award for music... I used to play tabla, mridangam for St.Josephs. We met in your REC hostel room for forming our own troupe etc... After that we never met! Please e-mail me!
RajG, Srinath & Other Gang: Congratulations. You have done a wonderful job. I missed so much... Any plans for doing similar show in Florida ?

Hi Chandra,
I do remember you..but sort of out of touch ! Sorry..let's discuss more..Regarding a gig in Florida, you need to get a good sponsor (Tamil Sangam or Doctor's Association etc..???) and me /Raja will put together a good team for you.
Hi Raja fan,
While I appreciate your views on what IR should and should not be doing...unfortunately no one has control on him (in fact that was one of the reasons he became quite unpopular)..he can afford to do that for the kind of great music talent he had..but I am not sure if he is going to listen to any one of us ! I do not mind leading a forum to address this matter an probably reach this to his years (not sure of the results !!)
Musically yours,
RAMANI

Raja Fan,
When I said I want to perform in a concert of "IR songs", I meant the audience to be thamizh music and IR Music's Fans (the first being a subset of the second). No, I was not suggesting to present IR to non familiar audience. NJ Tamil Sangam Light Music Show by P.Suseela on July 20th 1999 - Report
My friend, Ramani Raghavan, invited me to this concert. I was little reluctant to attend the show, the reason being, Suseela not being at her best to deliver any old songs. I agreed to go because Ramani told me that he would be singing along with Suseela. The show started 30 minutes late. Although it was a tuesday (working day), the auditorium was packed to full capacity (250 people). Most of them were the people who migrated to U.S.A in the 70's.
The orchestra had four musicians. All the musicians were from India.
Tabla/Dholak - Prasad
Octopad - Premkumar (Sivamani's brother)
Keyboard - Srikanth
Guitar - Ramani
Singers - Suseela, RamaKrishna, Ramani
The concert started with "Maha ganapathim" by Ramakrishna. It was decent. Suseela entered with a great opening song "Saravana Poigaiyil". I was surprised to see deliver the song without any flaw. Then there was no stopping her. She went on to deliver "Love Birds", "Muthaana Muthallavo", "Paartha Nyabagam". The keyboard player was brilliant. He played all the pieces with a simple Yamaha PSR 530. He switched instruments like crazy. Then Ramani joined Suseela for "Rajavin Parvai". The crowd went gaga over Ramani. They were extremely happy to encourage the local talent. Then came "Malarthum Malarathaa". This was the best of the evening, rendered with emotions, by both Ramani and Suseela. It was a memorable evening.

Sridhar,
Thanx for a great review. Thanx to good music lovers like you...small fries like me will strive to perform better and better..Thanx for one and all who attended this show yesterday especially my sincere gratitude goes to Tamil Sangam of NJ who gave me this golden opportunity to sing and play with a great legend like P. Susheela..I myself (on-stage) was surprised by the great performance and un-tiring rendering of so many songs (more than 30 songs) for more than 3-hours by this old woman (she is in her late 60s)...believe me she IS a legend in her own way..
