Guys...relax...I only drew a parallel in their ways of working...and after seeing some postings above, this time I'll say it blatantly...IR ranks among the world's greatest composers and ARR with the world's best today...
IR is still an unsung hero nationally and internationally, but his genius and contribution will be appreciated only much later. I say this not because of a blind devotion or a biased faith...I have a friend who has composed a symphony and other WC pieces, who lives and breathes WCM and is a staunch Beethoven fan...whatever little I know of WCM is due to the endless discussions with him...he also used to berate IR for he found many elements of Bach and Mozart whenever he heard his songs....I used to argue with him otherwise...IR has combined Tamil folk with WCM superbly. Of course influences will be there but being in a different time and culture...IR has managed to craft WC elements into Tamil folk and that too in film songs...and as we all know from 197? to 199?...we have found inspired WC interludes in many of his songs...only thing he didn't have the opportunity to perform in a pure WC genre...the need was not there...he stuck to his originality and has contributed a valuable sub-genre to WCM. In the coming years...(somebody has already suggested this in this thread)...his interludes will be compiled along with his FBGM and they will strike a chord and stand among the world's greatest. Just because the temples and pyramids of yesteryears were built with huge blocks of stone doesn't mean man is creating inferior edifices now...times have changed...similarly IR's contribution shines throughout the globe from this part of the world....(ARR in next..)

Guys,
FYI
I just finished seeing the movies 'Dheena' and 'Vanjinathan' in a VCD.
Dheena - The only saving grace of the movie was Yuvan's music. The movie was awful. Another failed attempt to copy 'Thalapathi'
Vanjinathan - The background music was scored by guys called 'C.rajamani' and not karthik, atleast that's what the credits say. One song was good. But again the music as well as the voices used do not suit Vijayakanth and he can't dance too. The movie sucked big time..I hope 'friends' is good. I guess the Raja family has come out pretty decent out of this as the songs are good.

I have some reliable info on why IR is still doing dabba movies. Apparently, his financial crisis still persists.
He has lost a couple of cars and several of his checks bounce. He has lots of immovable property in Pannaipuram. Thus, the main reason for him doing movies is MONEY.

Hi! Observer!
Money Crisis! For IR! He has scored 800 films man. I just can't believe it.
To my knowledge he did not make any huge investments in his productions also. I don't know what are your sources.

...contd...when it comes to ARR, IR fans have got nothing to fear...ARR continues IR's legacy that's all...and no way can he be compared with Robbie Williams or MJ...anyone who does this is either deaf or is a blind follower of music trends and not aware of the difference between the sound of a guitar and a drum...ARR's music due to the very nature of Tamil or Indian popular music encompasses many music styles...most of the Western rock stars and pop stars don't have this range and richness...they are trapped in their own cultures..we have had the advantage of learning from diverse influences...of course New Age and World music exponents in the west are now taking up the mantle...but mass acceptance of their products have to be seen first to comment.
Now coming back to why ARR has the potential to be ranked among the world's greatest composers....the same friend of mine who I have mentioned above...who lives and breathes Beethoven and for some obscure reason is not able to accept IR's music, once...and just once I emphasize...after listening to the "Minnale" song from "May Madham" commented that the violins melody were nice...I don't take this as the be all and end all of measurements...I am just saying that ARR too can if he wants to prove his mettle in symphony composition or that sort of thing...he can definitely do it...digital synthesizing allows you to create even theoretical musical instruments...sounds that we have not imagined...to accept those as music, we may not, because we have been conditioned to hearing certain ways of music...Beethoven because of his deafess could break the conditioning barrier and experiment...thus setting unparalleled trends...ARR too is at the threshold of such an opportunity as is IR...ARR has the advantage of youth and technology..IR experience and mastery...they can combine forces if they wish or go their own ways but then if they can transcend their commercial barriers then nothing can stop them from earning their rank amongst the world's greats...(I had to bring IR in the picture again because he is the link between the past and future of our music...it will be incomplete if I just focus on ARR)

The fault lies in our accepting the West as the standard for everything...music should go beyond..modern Indian music if compared with music from the west will stand among if not higher among the world's greatest...

Mr./Ms. Eden...when discussing IR's latest... sometimes discussions may digress..this is better as many view-points and information can be shared for each other's benefit....nothing wrong...if offended please accept my sincere apologies...I'll try to keep my digressions short..

Hi Cosmician,
Arr doesn't know how to wright the notes. Ir is the only person in india has the potential to wright down the musical notes straight away that comes to his mind. Just don't compare a Sound Engineer like Arr with Beethooven. Beethooven is a master composer. Just don't compare two musicians with what ur friend was telling. Then everyone will start copamring with what their friend said. Don't bring in Arr in this thread.

Once upon a time my friend was giving substantial evidences on how he found deeeeep similarities between, Deva and Metallica. Man he was awesome........God save IR.....God save Tamizh music.....God save Beethovan's grace.

Guys..read this in the paper today...Maestro IR to compose music for a 10-minute multi-lingual documentary titled The Real Salute produced by RR Gopaljee of the Chennai based 'Malar Network' and directed by Guna Shakthi brothers. IR scores the music for the lone song penned and sung by different lyricists and singers in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu. Malayalam and Kannada. The film stars Kiran Bedi as a rag-picker who finds the National Flag in the rubbish bin that she is rummaging through. Her patriotism makes her repair the torn flag with a piece from her green saree and hoists it on a mast and salutes it...this scene is enacted in the backdrop of a song : "My country's honour is my honour..I gave my clothing to the flag to protect its dignity which will absolve me of sin."

Mindster....
Writing music as notes right away was the only way of performing WCM 60 years back...today's technology gives the same power to you and me...When Swami Vivekananda had said "Each soul is potentially divine"...it can only mean that all of us have latent creative powers within us...some focus more and are able to achieve it..today's technology gives you the power provided you are passionate enough to use the power.....maybe Beethoven and Mozart are child prodigies and trained under masters...but that doesn't mean only prodigies and those trained under masters can create masterpieces....George Lucas has predicted that and even proved that soon an individual can create his own epics sitting at home....the latest episode of Star Wars has used specially created software that gives the director control over the actions of the characters...with the falling costs of computers and their increasing power...these software will be available in a not so distant future to us all...what is required is the application of our CREATIVITY...I empahsize this because this technology is only the tool..our CREATIVITY matters the most.
we are all standing at the threshold of a new era of Individualism...if u can't recognise and understand it then be prepared to be left behind..

Can somebody let me know whether Pandavas is still running in Chennai? I heard the movie is a failure in TN. IMO they have not advertised the movie widely. I dont know about overseas. I feel Maestro's music has not reached a wider audience, your comments please.
I read in Sujatha's Q&A in Ambalam that Media Dreams is coming out with Hanuman and Buddha too, any news on this? Already they are working on Little John, Robot, etc etc. Media Dreams is releasing ovies in quick succession and no proper marketing / planning is being done.
