Bhim,
those reviews have been there for atleast 4 years now;)) anyway, it is still new for people who are new to the net and I stronly recommend everyone to read those articles atleast for the humour and sarcasm in it if not for the sheer music knowledge of Dr. Narayanan.

Vijay / or any IR fan:
I saw a CD whose title is 'Parkkum Paarvayil...' and it has IR name in it. ANy idea of such a film. It had SPB, KJY, MV, janaki & susheela singing the songs.
I did not have a chance to buy it. By any chance it is a new film(or dubbed film???)_

Excellent songs in Kanna Unnai Thedukiraen. Only one MD can give original tunes these days and he is IR. He proved once again in Ka Un Th.

I know what VM will be doing if had not written for ARR and Deva for last 10 yrs.
At the same time no one written well like him in the past 10 yrs. his lyrics are not "text"s/deadbodies as u guys call. better u listen to them again, i can quote some if u couldnt. but the problem with him is his mouth is BIGger(100:1) than his brain.

If I heard it right, looks like the songs in this movie have more bass (la ARR). IR has done many songs with drums+strings. May not be difficult for him to try drums+bass. Also, the recording is approaching ARR style - instruments 'fade'd to the background. One song is a recycle and another song 'vanchikodi' has shades of a older IR song. He must have decided, why should I write original scores all the time when others are making big bucks copying from others. I have my ethics I will copy my own works :)
As usual I feel 'Ur urangum' would have been a classic if it had real drums. I really dont know why IR wants to use drum machines. His songs are better done with real drums.

From the first hearing of the album "Kanna Unnai Thedukiraen" , my picks are "koil mani kettene" and "oor urangum nerathile". Quite refreshing, esp. the Sax piece in the second interlude of "koil mani kettene", which again knocks my head saying...... Raja is there.

AR has more bass? everyone i spoke to seem to think arr has used this instrument more prominently. Its difficult to listen to ilayarajas bass not becoz there isnt any, but becoz the recordings didnt higlight this end of the wavelength as it can be done today.

krishnamurthy, I am very aware of the bass in IR's songs. It is different in ARR. In ARR's it is a very important part of the song. I think he must have been influence by the jungle/drum'n'bass genre of music. Other more knowledgeable posters might be able to throw more light on this.

"film lyric without a tune or music is a body without life, soul, color ... just a dead body.
Srikkanth, are you serious? Are you saying that any kavidhai form is irrelevant on its own, and that the power of the written word is a misnomer?
VM is by far the best contemporary lyricist we have, and I can't see anyone even matching half his stature. Sure he's had his fair share of bloomers, but in a time where other acclaimed poets like Mu.Metha haven't been able to successfully bridge the fusion of commercial film music with kavidhai thamizh, VM stands out as a beacon of hope. If you had watched his Tamil New Year's day interview (maybe available on NumTV) on Sun TV, you'd have marvelled at how he's atleast approaching film-lyric writing as an art.
Sure, I don't much like him as a person for some of his obnoxious comments, but his literary value is far higher than to be trashed as a non-relevant entity in the absence of IR or ARR.. I sincerely hope for the day that he joins hands with IR again, for no one after him has achieved the level of finesse and consistency as a team...

Suresh,
I agree he is a talented jerk (i repeat my old words)
Frankly how many will sit and listen if a VM reads out telephone mani pol...lyrics gains its weight due the tune....
I belive this: there is no VM if there had not been a ilayaraja or a a.r.rahman, VM needs a good medium...to get good stuff from him he needs a good composer to back him....do you remember he released a CD....with his lyrics...i think it was major flop.
He may write good non-filmi stuff, but as far as filmy stuff goes....he needs a tune to clinch on...

Srikanth from uswest,
You are right. When Kannadhasan published his poems, people used to rush and even well known poem writers of his time, appreciated his thoughts. What is important here is, the different ideas or atleast the same idea, said in a much easier way to understand, needed for lyrics writing. In one way, IR could have been fed up with the hype and unnecessary importance given to junk lyrics, by VM. I see everybody blaming IR breaking up with VM. Even though I agree there is no good lyricist(including VM) available right now like Kannadhasan, the choice looks like VM. All my point is, VM should improve. We have lot of good ideas unexplored(except by tamil literarians, who dig into those literature), in our tamil literature(Manimekalai, Sinthamani, etc.,) and brougt out in easy form of tamil lyrics to the music world.
I do not want to dream. I want them to happen in real life. Also, like bharathiyar mentioned, "Senriduveer Ettu Thikkum Kalai Chelvangal Yavum Konarndingu Saerpeer". We should take good ideas(not pizza, and Jurasic park or space movie fiction stories only) from western culture and introduce them into tamil lyrics of music world.

Wow what a performance man he is a real genius.
What a melodious performance by IR.
The songs Oorurangum Neerathil is just splending

Nobody seems to listen to songs just for its lyrics alone .Music has played the dominant role since Raaja took over the crown from MSV . May be we can say that MSV songs were hits partly due to the great Kannadasan's lyrics .But one can never say that Raaja's songs became hits due to VM .(Not even 1% )

Kiru,
I feel Arr follows mordern music for bass...like if you hear back street or nsync....they play only one note per bar or so,
the bass will not be a running rather it will be sliding...might not be with chords....
also he adds some reverb is around the bass to get a good spectrum
Majority of Arr songs use fretless bass, thanks to keith peters...great bass player.
at times he also uses slap bases Also I have heard 2 or 3 bass parts in some songs,
Arrs bass scores are simple, crisp and nice to hear.
eg: Kanalane, Ohh lala la, Kandukonden Kandukonden
If you are talking about Jungle drum kit - arr uses it more eg: thilana thilana
Whereus raja follows the old school, like beatles or beach boys, running bass...bass will be busy
more notes are played, goes with the chords...mostly he uses elec bass later he has also used keyboard bass.
raja's bass parts are somwwhat complicated and interesting..but .will sound hollow at times,
hear the song enuyire from ponthota kaval karan it has good bass parts.
anjali anjali , bgm parts has very good bass.
I like both the styles :)

I was trying to sequence 'kick yerude' from padayappa. The bass he has used just before the sax interlude is so 'heavy' (or maybe throughout the song - but is kinda lifts up there). It has a synth and a slap sound put together. Very interesting to hear. Iam tired of using my keyboard with the GM tones. I dont seem to get any depth out of it!
