Sridhar Seetaraman: Nice to have you back here again.
In KK, did you enjoy the song "Konji pesu kannamma"? The charanam is a counterpoint (atleast I think it is - the coloration is an independent melody in itself; is this not what a counterpoint is?)
Also another question: How successful is the music of Anthapuram COMMERCIALLY?

Hi Suresh,
Sorry for a late reply. About KR's influence in the music. I feel this is what is is happening - There are some songs which KR are doing - and these songs he tries to avoid IRs influence.
Typically in Ullaasam for example I could see IRs influence very decently merged with ARRs style. I felt that it was great. More than ARRs influence, all the quality in IRs songs which we see were not lost in these songs.
That is the way these songs sound to me - Meetatha oru veenai, All Poonthottam songs except Ponnumani, some Senthuram songs, songs in Desiya Geetham except Ladies Special, all songs in MVU , all songs in Devadhai except ENge en Kaadhali, Just Alai meethu in KK.
Notice I have mentioned the same albums you have mentioned. Now, these songs have the quality of IR in them. So I beleive they were IR's songs. BUT consider the exceptions in these albums - they were of a different quality - and they are like songs from Kadhala Kadhalaa. That is why I beleive these songs alone are from KR.
As for Pandiyanin Rajyathil and Enthan nenjil I find it difficult to beleive that these were not IRs music. Because there was not anything differeent in these songs that IR was not capable off. Maybe these songs were popularised as KR song for the sake of publicity for KR and certainly not the other way. Remember Enthan nenjil is like Innum ennai enna seyya pogirai.
I have not had any problem severely with other albums as Kadhal Kavithai - it is almost a KR's album. But I am also surprised that the album is a hit ???!!
We can hardly guess the reasons on why he is doing this ! Probably to give KR some quality time when he is without films. I think he should just use KR in such a way that he can bring KR's youth in his music. Unless KR comes up with haunting numbers like - Konjum Manjal Pookal.!!

Guys: KR had some influence in Kadhal Kavithai but it was only minor. All tunes were definitely IR's because they were composed in Goa (I would hardly imagine IR taking KR also with him to Goa). The source of this info is highly reliable - one who plays guitar for IR.
As for orchestration, certainly yes, KR had his say. I had been to the recording of "Konji pesu kannamma" - the bass violin in the first interlude and the guuitar piece in the second interlude (which follows the flute) were added by KR while the recording was going on.
He also played the chords on his keyboard and did some mixing stuff on his Mac PC.

Lanka,
good observation. But, didn't those frightening percussion during that bomb-search scenes and the classy violins in those sentimental scenes involving vikram and suva enthrall U???

Hi Gokul,
Shankar mahadeven is frequently used by hindi MDs(I guess he is from bombay) for special kathals(sorry....he is grossly underutilised that way)..
Examples I can think of are:
Pardes songs
Kuch Kuch hota hain (Raghu pathy raghava rajaram song)
Those more familiar with HFM can shed more lights.

hi.,
Shankarn mahadevan is the guy who gave the album 'breathless'., according to my collegue Raman's statement., he is very good in classical music but is not used for that in the cine field., as vaidy said., he is in most of the kaththal songs in HFM., but when i listen to his songs., i usually think that this guy deserves more., For TFM people., he has sung a song 'Netru nono inDru no no ' from the movie VIP ! i think IR will use him in a better way ! BTW., heard somewhere that Nityashree has done one song for IR ! which movie it is ?

Sridhar Seetharaman,
>The song "Alai meedhu" has brilliant counterpoint >in the interlude. The interlude breaks into a >String section followed by humming by the chorus. >Right there you have counterpoint to the chorus >with a keyboard melody. Then the chorus comes >back as a counterpoint to another brilliant >phrase on the strings. The man is brilliant.
I was listening this song over and over and found something different in the interlude that was amazing ... But then I could'nt figure out the counterpoint funda.! Pls educate . Does the song Vaa Vaa Manjal Malare in Raajaathi Raaja use the same technique !!
This is IR's speciality.. to give stuff that is very good to listen for a layman and at the same time has something in it for the trained ears as well
Also guys abt ANthapuram, Pls don't miss it just b'cos it is non-TFM -- It is simply superb ! Especially the "Asale " song and a SJ pathos.. Will haunt u for ever.
In Kaathal Kavithai, My favorites are alai meethu and Kaathalmeethu..
Happy listening
Cheers

MSK,
Anthapuram, - Did you buy the CD or Cassette? B'cause in Madras I bought the Cassette and the quality is extremely bad. It is from a company called Melody Makers - an Hydrabad based. Even inside the cassette it is printed as "Melody Malers" Note the 'l' in 'makers'.
Can't IR ensure to give good quality media to his fans?

Song review..... ALAI MEEDHU from Kadhal Kavidhai:
What an excellent song. IR has indeed surpassed himself in this short but very very sweet melody, where his has used Raga content(Uthayaravichandrika/Suddha Dhanyasi - Raja is like the King in command of this Raga, as in the song Vilzilil Vilzunthu from Alaigal Oyvadhillai/Raaghavane Ramana from Ilamaikkalangal e.t.c. - I think it transports him to the ALAI....), Tala content(Kanda Chaapu) and fantastic basslines - my knowledge of counterpoint is sadly lacking.... I have been lsitening to this song for days now, and what an absolute pleasure it is. If heard on system which picks up detail, the BASS in the recording is enthralling, where one is just transposed into a luscious sun 'n' sea, with the coolest of breeze, in the form of this piece pleasently caressing you. WOW, what a song. Even Bhavatharini's singing(often goes off shruthi) was covered up by the RICH LAYERING and complexity of instrumentation. I just have to share this experience with the world.
More News: "Suyamvaram" - http://www.minnoviyam.com/star/index.html Interestingly there would be four songs in
the movie("Suyamvaram") scored by four different music directors Ilayaraja, Deva, S.A. Rajkumar and Sirpy. The work on "Suyamvaram" would begin on March 24th morning and the entire movie would be ready for editing by the end of the same
day. Presently the movie is slated to release during the first week of May 99.

NagasubramaniaN: Have you heard Shankar Mahadevan perform with his band SILK? It has Louis Banks on the keyboards and Sivamani on the drums.... I think they are a rave in Bombay.....
