Vijay,
I remember a song "Kannamma... kaadhal ennum kavidhai solladi... un piLLai Thamizhil... Kannamma" in a BaluMahendra film (I think, it is 'Vanna Vanna PookkaL') starring Prashanth. I didn't see the film and I don't know whether it is a title song or whether it has been picturized. Can you clarify, bcoz I too don't think that IR's voice will suit Prashanth?

Do you think IR cares whether his voice will
suit the actors ? I don't think so.
If he does, he wouldn't be singing
songs for Murali ( in Poonthottam )..

Clarify:
I'm with you totally. I've mentioned this earlier in a thread here, but some of the lyrics are totally insane, and I would blame IR for being a non-professional in accepting such trash. I don't think that the lyric writer is ALONE responsible for the songs would wash here, as IR has been known to exercise far greater clout than them.
So many inane songs in the last decade that I'm sure that the % of songs with meaningful lyrics by IR in the last decade will not be more than 10%, IMO. an example, the song from Poovarasan
intha poovukkoru arasan poovarasan
adi punnaivanakkuyile
intha ponnukkorarasan poovarasan
adi thenpazhani mayile
what nonsense is this? even in the relatively better-acclaimed "en kanavinai kel nanba" in DG, Vasn(?) writes "patti thottikkum palingu kallale roadu vendum". How can he imagine driving on marble-paved roads? maybe he envisioned a society where everyone skates, i presume.
Very few songs pass muster in the recent crop. some from "annan" were ok. the last one i really liked was "vanaja girija"s Unnai ethirpaarthen. Wonder who wrote it, but they were quite ok.
Even in a song with such a wonderful tune as "Alli Sundaravalli", listen to the chorus interludes in the charanams:
"ammaadi, ival meni kannadi, kannadi..."
Oh, I was fairly upset in a TFM thread when someone said that they felt like slitting Suresh Peters' throat, but now with the benefit of experience, I fully understand that feeling. High time all these so-called lyricists are sent packing, & IR and VM bury the hatchet for their mutual benefit & the overall good of TFM.
So I dream...

Guys,
I have very little exposure to music other than listening to cine songs.. (90% IR!!). I felt quite uneasy listening to the title song by Yesudass in Desiya Geetham. Seemed as though he was singing in a different pitch at different times during the song. I'm just wondering if it was my cassette or was there really something wrong...
Guys with an ear for music, could u please clarify?

Srikanth avargale:
Vanakkam, it's good to see you after a short "vanavasam". I'm so happy that you liked "Nann Vakkapatta" from DG. I'd considered that one of his best in recent times, the song told a story by itself. I found the interludes very good & had posted in one of the threads that was IR's best song for '98.
The music has such a visual quality to it, that I thought maybe the song could have been handled to its potential by a Mahendran or Bharathiraja. Not to dilute Cheran's potential one bit, & I still haven't seen the film to find how it has been picturised.

Hi Srikanth,
Nice to hear your comments on "Naan vakkapatta". BTW, I saw the movie too and the songs fit the movie situations so well. I also liked the song - En kanavinai kel nanba - except that lyrics were not good for the first stanza. (it was like a paathi kinaru thaandarathu. If one wants to have to produce a quality song - you go full way. Yielding half-way thru to the temptations of using words like cell phone was terrible.) But a masterpiece of music.
Hi everyone,
BTW recently I heard "Kaadhal kavithai", "thodarum" and Kaliyoonjal. - Kaliyoonjal was a great piece of music. Thodarum - except for probably one song rest of them were IR style. But KK, - it makes sick in my stomach when I hear some KR stuff coming out in the name of IR. "Alai meedhu" was great but other songs all had a lot of KR influence.
To me that is a really terrible thing - I can point out which sound is coming from IR's notes or not. I remember some time back Vijay had metntioned about KR's influence in KK.

Sudhakar,
I find myself in agreement with your comment. I feel that KJ's voice has deteriorated. I think there is a song in Kallazagar "Chinna vayasuley". the song resembles MV's "Ponmaanai thedi naanum poovodu vandhen". I think it is KJ who has sung it. I felt totally uncomfortable. Sorry for the digresson

Mukund,
I have an opinion about this KR-influence in IR's recent songs. I'll have to admit I'm personally not for this trend growing as it especially destroys IR's power over song interludes. But, in several threads here, I've noticed people expressing that IR needs to change with the trend in order to stay with the present crop. I've felt that maybe IR has a feeling that even when he puts in his best in some films that inspire him (Guru, Siraichaalai, Avatharam, etc.), not many (I mean in a genral mass-sense) notices them, leave alone appreciate. But, is not true that most songs that we say are KR-influenced, starting from "Pandiyanin Raajiyathil uyyalala" and extending right upto KK, have become hits in the popular domain? I can recall 5 distinct landmarks in this KR-backed IR hits - trend
1 pandiyanin raajiyathil - Pandiyan
2 kannale kaadhal kavidhai - Aathma
3 endhan nenjil neengadha - Kalaignan
4 ennai thaalatta varuvalo - K.Mariyadhai
5 most songs in Manam Virumbuthe Unnai & Kaadhal Kavidhai
In fact, I would attribute as a turning point the phenomenal success of "ennai thaalatta".
The way I look at it, IR has actually produced some of his all-time bests in his recent Malayalam movies, & some Tamil ones like Mogamul, Avatharam etc. But, none of them reached the success they deserved. To give you just one example, I feel "Naan Vakkappata" belongs to the same class as many of his early B.Raaja, Mahendran classics.
So, has he just lost the drive to attain critical perfection & let KR go "contemporary" with a vengeance? Maybe, he's reached a stage when he needs either an inspiring script or a creative team that understands him to get the best out of him.

IR fans:
Dont miss listening to Andhapuram. The songs are great. This album is on par with "geethanjali" (idhayathai thriudathe).
The song "Asale.." is just brilliant. This one song is an example of the difference between IR and other MDs and why I can't get satisfied with what I hear from other MDs and hence can't postion them on par with IR.
Dont miss out on this album

I am not sure if Punniyavathi is a new album. the song "Mayee mayee" is good. This has a very great resemblance to "thatharam" of Guru "kaakkala kannamma" of YM and "mannan koorai selai" of Kalapani. But for the lyrics it looks a very good song though it does not fit the situation. It is supposed to be an "amman" song, but sounds more like a girl dancing and singing in the fields admiring nature. Infact we can replace the charanam of this song by that of guru. Exempting the drum - interlude the song is a gem. The link is:

It is in Senthil's site. Please do not miss this song

After a long time, I am posting something on the TFM page. I could not resist myself from writing about the songs from "Anthapuram" and "Kaadal Kavithai".
The song "Kaadhal Meedhu" from "Kaadal Kavithai" has some brilliant chord progressions. Raja has arranged some interesting chord progressions. For the first time, I have observed Raja using different chord progressions for the same pallavi. The song is loosely based on E scale. First pallavi has different chord progression. It is not just using differnt set of instruments. BTW, the song has extensively used jazz chords.
The song "Alai meedhu" has brilliant counterpoint in the interlude. The interlude breaks into a String section followed by humming by the chorus. Right there you have counterpoint to the chorus with a keyboard melody. Then the chorus comes back as a counterpoint to another brilliant phrase on the strings. The man is brilliant.
"Anthapuram" is just brilliant. Some of the songs are definitely arranged by Karthik Raja. The Shankar Mahadevan song has Karthik Raja's stamp both in melody and arrangement.
And the Raja comes with a master piece "Asalae". Brilliant mastery over the technology. The first interlude again has some clever arrangements typical to Illayaraja. While I was overwhelmed by the first interlude, the second interlude was even more interesting. The second interlude starts with slap guitar/jazz guitar combo and moves to karnatic based phrase. The phrase shifts and jumps to Kalyani briefly before jumping back to original ragaam. Just brilliant. Good rendering by Chitra.
And then Raja comes with a another master piece "Venniloe". Has traces of the "Yaatra mozhi" song. Chord progressions are too good. I have not tried to dissect the song yet.
Srikanth Devarajan! Must buy albums. Take my word for it.

Heard "anthapuram". To be honest, the only song which took my attention at frst was "Asalae".... lovely renderation by IR. The rest I'll have to listen again. I heard from my Hyd friends, that the movie is not good, but everyone is excited about IR's return to telugu after a long time.
By the did anyone hear the album "Breathless" by Shankar Mahadevan. Nice buy. I did'nt know that he'd sung a song in "anthapuram".
