rb, just cool down please,
Deepan is just an interviewer, what else he can do, even I have asked about this to KR a year ago, he gave me some answer, what can we do about?....I can ask him back, but he will cut the phone on me,
I feel raja should answer these questions!...he is responsible.
Poor KR supports his father, which is natural.

Yenga it is quite disturbing for all of us ....
Just put yourself in his shoes...This man has worked hard for how many years...thirty ..?...then he gets a break but no one(the world community) actually acknowledges his work or talent...or for some reason does not click upto his expectations ..ie publicity(leaving tamilnadua and his fans....I feel that he is just waiting for the right opportunity..I guess if hey ram goes international then he could..have some kind of backing or say work ex to promote...Athu mattum illamal he is a very god fearing person..neengala yethalum kariyam nadakkalena ...swamya kumtittu ..yella baarathayum avan kitta vitturringa...same way i guess...
I know it is frustrating but be patient...if you have observed most top people get their self-actualization only in the later half of their life and it stays..through history...
Even his comments on pop music jsut shows that he has become a more mature person...Even he was a novice when he entered but atleast chose this path of "good" music...
Probably we might all one day look back and say good he waited to release his album 2000 is more "lucky"...I am jsut trying to rationalize the situation...Dont get me wrong...When we do scenario analysis always try to see a bright scene..otherwise everything is gloomy and frustrating...
one more eagerly waiting

Piyush
This is what I call mind block...lack of self confidence.....he is dishing out crap again "why think of some thing .....it is past now....he wants to concentrate on future......"
When you want, the whole world should listen to you and when you sit down for dinner...suddenly you cancel the whole and tell us that you will make a fresh dish and give a feast.......all crap man, do you buy all these.......
He is the best example for a man who with out any family pedigree, education, just by dint of hard work could equip himself so much in all the intricacies of music....and mature to the level where he has got all it takes to become one of the greatest composers of this planet earth....but in the end because of his idio syncrocies....mental aberrations.....lack of market savvyness......messes up the whole thing......to the great disappointment of a nation. It is really a sad story.......but then man proposes and God disposes...isn't it?

In the above link, pls see the article 'Ilayaraajavin Symphoniyil KuLarupadiya?'
It says IR's music gives only bodhai and he has not contributed anything to the future generation. It also says WC form of music is not required for our audience.

IR's music is bOdhai ? Thats BS. Leave the orchestration out completely, doesn't the melodies of IR sound classic ? IMHO, it does.
The author rushes to tell us Symphony does not arise from villages. But IR has done 'symphonic' music in so many movies that people have enjoyed them unbeknownst of what it is. Even in karisakattu pUvE there is a baroque prelude to a village song. Polyphony is alien to Indian music. This is what IR is trying to bring home.
Complete lack of understanding of IR by the author and almost disrespectful. Very deplorable.
Any person in TFM knows better !!
We have one of those 'egalitarian intellectual' trying to teach others what to do !! I can consider IR to be the greatest contribution of Tamil film industry to Tamil cultural corpus.

Sometimes people think they know everything and looks this what happens.
This tunnel eyed vision of tamilians should be broken afterall it is only a tamilian who boldly declared 'Yadum Ore Yavuram Kelir' Music doesnt has any cultural or country borders otherwise we wouldnt have listened to Beethoven or MJ or Madonna so these kind of half baked articles should be deplored.
I will tell you an incident that happened in Bharat Ratna MS Subbalakshmis life.
Her late husband Sri SadhaSivam refused a journalist a interview pointing out that after some talking he found that the person who have come to interview MS doesnt knew anything about music or carnatic so how could he do justice by interview a musician in the same way this article should also be ignored.
Tunnel eyed vision very bad for any culture country and people.

Kiru,
IR's music is surely wonderful to listen to.But I would like to know what you think about his contribution to Tamil culture?
I know he removed the influence of Hindi music. My feeling his music didn't influence or effect the culture in any way.

He brought the beauty of WCM into tamil movies. His approach and analysis is what makes him a genius. I understand culture is one aspect that should be kept in mind when you make music. If IR didnt have that in mind, his music would have sounded like Gospel / the kind of music that u hear in churches. I think he has contributed quite a bit to tamil music, if not tamil culture.

Swamiji,
Sure he brought a lot of WCM into Tamil movies.Did that by any chance set people thinking about WCM in a broader sense(say differnet composers' contribution to WCM)?
I sure agree with you he contributed to Tamil film music. but culture?
I would like to hear Kiru's thoughts on this.

He made a generation or more to respect tamil music. He showed folk, carnatic and western classical can be music of the masses. Not that musicians before him didnt do. But he had a big part in it. Think of 80's only with SG and chandrabose along with few deva's, SARs along with a execption like MSV. Would there be forum to talk about TFM?. We wouldnt have even cared about tamil film music. (I dont know about you trend, but this is my HO, you can continue with your beleif). How many kannadigas, maharashtrians and few others are proud of thier movies and music that too in 80s? There had been so many greats in carnatic world, but how many took the pain to take it to masses through popular medium like films.
Its just not raja, there are many others too in other departments, But in terms of film music he did a lot.

Well, lets examine what the word culture means...
from Dictionary.com heres the quote
"The totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought"
and
"Intellectual and artistic activity, and the works produced by it"
In that light, we can say Thiruvalluvar has contributed to Tamil Culture becoz his "intellectual" and "philosophical" couplets are spoken through the tamil "way" of life.
Lets take for example "Pattu Pudavai". It has a characteristic "jarigai" that u can identify with kancheepuram or banarasi silk. But we all know that silk was discovered in china...but how did it get into tamil culture? Well, we made use of it to suit our particular taste. Now doesn't that mean silk is part of tamil culture eventhough it has foreign origins?
Likewise, WCM was alien (not totally) to us. But IR has used for example Bach's fugue/2-part inversion technique in tamil songs...TO SUITE OUR TASTE!!! so I think he has contributed to tamil culture as well!

ir has not contributed anything to tamil film music let alone tamil culture. ada pOngappA. thAngaladA sAmi.
it doesn't matter if we like it or not, acknowledge it or not, ... or not, films are a major component of indian culture; almost every aspect of indian life is affected one way or other. once lata mangeshkar said that indian films are nothing but an excuse for music! therefore anyone who dominates/dominated the music industry for two decades (or more) has/had a great influence on the culture. what has mgr contributed to tamil culture? what has karunanidhi contributed to tamil culture? what has kalki, jayakAnthan, jAnakirAman, chAru nivEdhithA, jayamOhan, ... contributed to tamil culture? what has mss, mahArajapuram, madurai maNi iyer, gnb, ... contributed to tamil culture? what has ... ...? ... ...

Ok Let us forget WCM for a while.
Sometimes our own culture needs revival. In that sense did he not revive our gramiya style through his film songs?. Has there been anybody before or is there anybody after who could conjure up the rustic flavor prevalent in many of his songs?.
