Have any of you listened to cafe-noir..
I had an opportunity to listen to their concert...
Some tracks totally resemble How To name it and nothing but wind... not that anyone is copying.. but i always thought NBW and HTNI where trademark classics of IR.. but now i know where to go look out for similar music..
check out...www.cafe-noir.com
Awesome guys..

MSK & Deepak
There are (at least) 2 versions of 'manadhilae oru paattu': SPB's solo and a his duet with Susheela. I have not heard the Asha version.

Just managed to grab solla marandha kadhai mp3s. another day wasted, spent entirely listening to "Gundumalli" and "Edho Unna" on repeat-mode, especially "Gundumalli". Harish Rag. & S. Goshal have sung in a really catchy, almost lethargic way. good album after Ivan. hope the trend continues.
all allegations of recycling from "Therku Theru Machaane" are not justified. other than a few seconds of similarity, the songs are different, to say the least. and "Edho Unna" really does not sound like any part of "Oliyile Therivadhu" for more a few microseconds.
It is really amazing to find the lack of conclusive rehashes (that last for a measurable time interval) among IR's collosal work. It almost sounds a silly to say that IR is not capable of producing a "new" song. the one who alleges that IR uses a Xerox machine is either desperately looking out for such stuff from IR to improve his idol's image or has a very high expectation from IR (as he should) to produce stuff of absolute quality.
NOM to AY, but I do hope you belong to the latter ;-)

kk,
with reference to beyond the soul.
That little piece was very impressive. I feel the score for the movie is going to be very good.

s0, its not just the notes but the whole "feel" of the song that makes you think you have already something like that before. IMO, there is nothing new that IR has offered in any of his recent albums save for a couple of songs from Ivan. No new scales or rhythm structures explored and the style seems painfully familiar. Ivan was good. Kaasi, Azhagi, En mana vaanil, Ramana and SMK were not.
Listen to his malayalam compositions from the late 90s. They sound so much different.

Hi, I saw the trailor of the movie Kamaraj on viajy TV. for the background music, they played the "How to name it". Is How to name it going to be played back in the movie or the background has not been composed and so they have played the HNI music? Any one please confirm

Sabesan, first of all no need for you to plead like this :-) If you like them, I am happy for you. I did give those songs/albums that you mentioned a couple of listenings earlier on. I dont bother to listen to something again and again if it hardly makes an impact the first time around. This especially applies to the present day albums (from all MDs) most of which are pathetic to say the least.
"Vaanavilley" to me pales out badly in comparison to earlier songs like "Meendum Meendum Vaa" set in a similar scale. To me it looks obvious that IR didnt bother to work on any of the songs for Oscar Ravichandran :-) Kaasi was painful to hear, especially "Maanu tholu" and "en mana vaanil".
If you compare them to some of the folk songs earlier from Avathaaram, which were much better, like "Gundumanu kulunguthadi" or "chandirarum sooriyarum" you would probably see where I am coming from. The freshness is missing.
Or listen to "Shivakaara"(Kochu Kochu santhoshangal), "Siva Malli poove" (Friends) and compare it with his recent TFM songs. Execept for Ivan, you would'nt find any song from the other albums measuring up to those two.

vijay: I feel Gundumalli is fresher anything that IR has offered recently. this includes Ivan if you do not consider the carnatic songs. after a long time I liked a new song immediately the first hearing.
I agree with you regarding the Kaasi, En Mana Vaanil.. Maybe IR is composing according to what he thinks is the current taste in TFM & MFM. or maybe its KR's influence. IR-ukke velichcham.

Digression : s0, try listening to "engirundhu vandhaayada" from five star MDed by AS/Parasuram. One of the better songs to come out in recent times. The interludes are somewhat annoying because of the situation in the film probably, but overall good melody flow and neat tabla work after a long time.
yaaro, good. Where did you hear the songs?
- From: vijay (@ 68.85.0.157)
on: Sun Jan 5 19:56:21 EST 2003
s0, the Gundumalli song sounds fresh probably because of Shreya Ghosal's and HR's voices :-) To me, the tune and the flute pieces sounds cleverly derived from a combo of "Vaanathu thaaragaiyo" (Poonthottam) and "Aalolangili thoppile" ( Siraichaalai), especially the Pallavi part.

oh yes - i agree the song "Shivakaara" is a gem.... but then, why should we always expect a gem :-)..... just kidding..... for me, Azhagi's "Oliyelaee, therivadhu" is equivalent to the "Shivakaara" one..... only difference is, i liked the "Shivakaara" song on the 1st listening itself.... and i totally did not like the "Oliy.." song - untill i watched the movie.... wow, the way Thangar had picturized/directed the song - it did have a great impact..... and the "Vaanavilaey" song - i listened to it after my friend told me to hear it - untill then i was seriously *scared* to listen to Ramana song (after reading the reviews it got here).... and i found a song which had the *happiness* flowing in it - some feeling, iam not able to express it completely..... so i liked it a lot.....
En Mana vaanil - hmm.... i don't want to argue on this one..... except for few ok ones (Enna solli paduvadhoooo - my 5 year old daughters favourite one), not so great....
KAASI - i liked it from day one.... especially Maanu Thoolu onu :-).... many of my friends did not like Hari's voice though..... and this was one album - where IR sounded totally different from all the movies coming around that period of time....
Ivan - "ennai ennaa seidhaaai" and "Appadi pakradhunnaa" were real good one's....

vijay: I did like HR's rendition particularly in that song. anyway, each to his opinion.
The Five Star song sounds very different. it follows a complex rhythm pattern and is very Indian, a rarity these days.

For those who would like to probe into songs further ....
'Nethu kudutha vaarthai' from kadhal saadhi & 'en mana vaanil' from kaasi are set in thodi scale. Compare these songs with 'gangai karai mannanadi' from varusham 16. That is IR's unbeatable calibre in diluting carnatic ragas.
