Shashi:
Regarding the Ragas of songs in Alaipayudhe;
The 'Colours' song is predominently in Karaharapriya, compare interludes for this, with Veesum Thendral Kaatrinile from Mona Lisa.
The September Maadham song is in Keeravani.
Yaaro Yaarodu has a lot of Sankarabarnam in it.
Snehidhane is based on Sindhubairavhi/Natabairavhi, with a bit of Vaasanthi, I think.

Anyone know a website for info on Kandukonden Kandukoden? I am eagerly waiting for the songs. I have been listening to Alai Payuthe songs and they are "ok" i thought. I am really impressed with the music in the title song of Alai Payuthe. The singers are also excellent.... The song flows even better than many classical verions by famous singers. If not ofr any other reason, you must get Alai Payuthe to listen to Alai Payuthe at least!

Hey Geetha,
I saw your picture with ARR in ARR's site. It's really nice. You are pretty lucky.

Ummm, there are some immortal love songs, which are divine. ‘Chaiyya chaiyya’ is divine inspiration.
ARR is the one started giving credits for the people involved in his albums by putting their names in the album cover. I hope he will follow the same trend and gives credit to the original composer if he suttifies from him/her, it would make life easier for everyone.
Why there is "Ummmm..." in his answer? Isn't it telling us that he never expected that question from the interviewer and got caught red-handed.
And he is working with ALW? kali kAlam.

Sukhwinder once on some interview said that ARR called him one evening...he met him at his terrace during his prayer. They were discussing about Sukhwinder's first song(Thakshak number) and about punjabi folks. Sukhwinder sang few phrases of punjabi devotionals, ARR quickly grasped it and composed the theme for "chaiya chaiya"...he said he was amazed that a south indian could compose a punjabi folk so fast...
I need to listen to the original to see whether its a "attai" copy or an inspiration

Aruvi: Which site is it on? By the way did you catch Sivamani, Selvaganesh & Guitar Prasanna(making a bit of a fool of himself, unfortunately, along with the very strange Astad Debu doing a dance) in Canada for a show called Sangamam 2000?

ARR's comments on originality in composing music in indiainfo interview:
No one can be completely original, because the notes are already there. I do a lot of fusion from different traditions including Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, reggae, rock and Carnatic music - my favourites. As far as possible, I try to be original. The rest is up to Allah.
on his style of composing :
I tell my musicians to play whatever they feel. Then I record what I want. I spend a lot of time - around four days - on the lyrics too. Altogether it takes about a week to complete a song. And I don't use computers. My music is synthesizer-oriented.

So, allah brings all the tunes from others... :), let him visit murugesan street once, then he will know then he'll know how to be "completely original"!!

Lord Webber on ARR (excerpts from midday..)
Naturally, Webber is all praise for Rahman. “He’s an absolute genius, and he’s one of the most exciting composers on the contemporary scene. I thought I’d produce a musical where I can encourage Rahman to do something big. This is the first time I’ve asked another composer to produce music for my production,” he beams.
Webber points out that he was first impressed by Rahman after he heard the Dil Se song ‘Chaiyya chaiyya’. “It was splendid. I just couldn’t believe my ears,” he says, probably not knowing that ‘Chaiyya chaiyya’ was itself inspired by a Sufiana tune written by Baba Bulleshah.
Ever since, he decided to hear more of Rahman, from Bombay and Roja to Taal and Rangeela. “Without being told who the composer was, I would identify that it was Rahman,” he points out.

Hope Webber also heard albums from 'enigma', 'boneyM', 'madonna' from where our guy suttified some stuff. I was listening to 'boneyM' other day, he just copied a violin piece and inserted that into 'kokku seivA kokku' in Muthu.

Geetha,
I saw a bit of Sangamam 2000 tape. It was ok. Sivamani got interviewed in the tamil tv program/radios by KR Rajkumar along with the others and that was ok too, and they got interviewed by Karen Johnson for Bollywood Boulevard. I believe Prasanna is the guy with the long hair??. Unfortunately, I wasn't paying much attention to any of the interviews. Reason:EXAMS:-((.(sigh)

It is nice to read such a good appreciation
of Rahman and Indian Music from Weber. Weber
feels certain that Rahman and his music (our
music) will take the West in a big way, because
of the great melodic and percussive combination.
Let us wish Rahman grand success on world level,
with this opportunity.
Anbudan,
RJ

ChandY: The song is by HH and Mahalakshmi, the title song that I saw the shooting for in Scotland. It is a Ragamalika in Nalinakanthi, with some Kathanakuthoohalam in it too.....
Ramesh: You can do it because this is the music you grow/grew up with. Andrew had heard very little Indian music before this. He was played a tape of 2 hrs of Bollywood stuff and he picked out 2 songs, which turned out to be by ARR. He told me this himself.....I asked him about IR and he acknowledged that he'd heard him too, but very little!

Amazing ........
Honestly guys, the start of the song "kanudukonden kandukonden...", did not impress me. But the charanam seems to grow on me. Still it falls into "engeyo ketta padal.......:-)"

Hi
Listening to Pachai nirame from AP. Simply
a master piece from Rahman. As I was trying to
create a MIDI version, tried to listen to the
details of the song and got blown out by the
richness. A very very rich song with layers and layers
of ideas, so smoothly integrated, maintaining
a very very gentle mood. Every instrument includiong the voice plays such a gentle soft
touch.
The flute piece (theme)
is repeated many times, but each time there is
a new accompaniment variation, very rich imagination. And it all seems very natural.
IMHO, this song is not only a milestone for
Rahman but also in the history of Ambient music.
Great work, Rahman!
Please listen to the CD or MP3.
