Are we still discussing IR copied songs?
What about 'Yen Jodi Manjakkuruvi' from Vikram? This is taken from SummerFox.

nkk and raju,
Both your mentions were news to me. See that, Srinath, there's a couple more added to IR's dirt list. The atmosphere in the DF should be such that people should not feel threatened to post an IR-critical statement. IR is not safe from criticism, nobody is. But a newcomer to the DF may very well feel that the page is funded by IR from the lopsided attention he gets over anybody else. This is why there's no need for me to shower him with praise and attention. Attention is sorely needed elsewhere. Anyway, this is not going to diminish IR's stature in my mind, nor have I ever bothered to match Deva and IR as equals. They are separate entities. But I remember both their good songs, give credit for both and try to criticize their bad stuff as bad. Okay folks, sorry about the rather lengthy indulgence on my part in this thread, but at least we are coming back to what this thread is about.

Guys, I dont think the list would be very long if you simply included songs that IR copied from others. How about including songs that IR has based on/originated /modified from some of his own songs. That list might be interesting since IR has pointed several instances of this himself in interviews.

Don't you feel that the tune for the first line from the song "Oho Uruguthe, Idhayame, Arugile vaa vaa" from Nooravuthu Naal is very close to "Money Money Money must be funny..." ? IR excels though in changing the mood and feel of the song.

on: Thu Jan 28 10:53:03 EST 1999
KSS, interesting observation!! yeah, definitely the notes atleast for the first three words are similiar. changing moods though is no big deal for IR. at ease he can convert a happy song into pathos without changing the tune.
nkk,
is summerfoxthe name of the song? if so, which is the group?

add 'karpoora bommai onru kaiveesum thenral onru..' from keladi kanamani to the list. i heard a song with similar starting in an ageold tamil movie.(way before MS)but the stanzas were slightly different.
(is 'objective'rameshb listening?)

IS A LEGEND.I WAS A FAN OF M.S.V. BUT WHEN ILR
ENTERED THE FIELD & HAS COMPOSED SO MANY WONDERFUL
SONGS ,HE IS MY FAVORITE THOUGH ARR HAS ENTERED.
ILR DID BVERYTHING WITH THE MUSICIANS BUT NOT WITH
COMPUTERS.IN CHENNAI WE HAVE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE
[AS MUSIC DIRECTORS]WHO CAN PLAY WITH COMPUTER

INDIAN FILM MUSIC.

Udhaya,You can also add this song to the (dirt!) list. Thayumanen, Thanga Ilamane
Thaalattu ...
sung by S.Janaki in Engeyo Ketta Kural(if i am correct) was an e-adichan copy from a christian prayer song composed by Jesus Calls Bro. Dinakaran
- From: Raj (@ master.hyd.deshaw.com)

Ganesh: There was a DMK prachara song during thre last elections whose tune sounded remarkably like Humma Humma...I believe Rahman had his inspiration there:)
See, how easy it is to throw muck...how sure are you that Raja copied from Dinakaran ?Couldn't it be the other way around?
- From: Ganesh Babu (@ 205.218.142.246)
on: Tue Mar 2 20:36:40 EST 1999
Raj, It is not throwing muck on IR. There is no doubt that IR is the greatest MD tamil film world ever had. It is nothing wrong to criticize anybody. I do not know whether u know this fact. There used to be a program in Ceylon Broadcasting coporation Tamil Sevai 2 during late 70s in which they used to bring out the tamil movie songs which had been inspired by old movie or other songs. Why do you take it in the wrong side. consider it as a n inspiration.

ganesh babu, neenga sollaradhai nambaradhu kashtamaa irukku. because engeyo kEtta kural was released in 1982.. eppadi late 1970slle andha song copynnu solla mudiyum?

Ganesh, BB:
A correction - The song Thayumanen is not a copy from Dinakaran's number; rather it is copy of a much older church song whose lyric is like this:
Devane NAn umadhandaiyil (You may please consult some CSI friends to show this from their song book, written by Mr Vedanayaga Shastri or someone like that)
However, this is something like taking a note or two from a Thiagaraja Kirthana (if you bracket both of them as devotional old classics)and definitely does not tarnish IR's image much! (Okay there are some 10 or 20 copied songs among the 3000-4000 or so composed by him. Negligible percentage)

Theres nothing wrong in criticising IR. He is definitely one of the best MDs we have ever had.. but to err is human.. and if he has lifted tunes, then the fact remains that way. Lets be more objective in our evaluations.
I'd like to hear more examples of "lifts" by IR

It appears to me that in the charanam of the song, unakkenaththaanE
innEramaa naanum kaaththirundhEn of 'Ponnu Urukku Pudhusu',
Raja took a heavy inspiration from the charanam of the song,
unadhu vizhiyil enadhu paarvai of 'Netru Indru Naalai'.
I could be wrong. Is there any one else who feels the same way?

Unadhu Vizhiyil is from Naan Yen Pirendhen. PS sounds great and IMO one of the best from SG.

The song "Nee Nadandal Nadai Azhagu..
Nee Sirithal Sirippu Azhagu... "from basha is a copy of a old hindi movie song from "Caravan". It is a full copy "ATTAI COPY".

IR is a great legend in Music. Nobody can ever deny this fact. He might have got inspiration from some songs from Western or even from Gramiya Paattu, but we can't under-estimate his talent or skill just because he had composed so-called
copy songs. However, I agree there is nothing wrong if we criticise on such songs. Here is a
song..
"En purshan thaan . Enakku mattum thaan" is a
attai copy of " Dum mare dum "
- From: Shankar (@ webgate0.mot.com)

Raja,
if the MD for unadhu vizhiyil is sankar-ganesh , then I feel they wud've copied from raja. there has been some instances of the same (pattu vaNNa rOsAvA is copied from uchi vagundheduthu by Raja ).

There is a song in Kadhal Kavidai - the one by
Ila Arun and Swarnalatha.. The starting bit of
music (jaade ho.. something of that sort) is
lifted from a Ghazal by Hariharan ( Album: Halka
Nasha)..
But I am not sure if even that is the original..
Sounds like some african beat..

Chandy: Objective? Oh!No! Not again. Guys, this is a seriosu request..please invent a new word to replace objectivity. I am tired of typing that word.:). No one is going to object, if the object u've is (the) object i've namely, objective analysis. But if the object u've is not objecti've , which it apparently is not, I am going to object. Because, while it is alright to criticise for crimes committed, it is not to throw muck generally. And as it has been proved by subsequent discussions, no body is clear as to which came first..sago.dinakaran's melody or Raja's tune. No chronology of events has been vouched for by reliable sources. So, if you want to say Raja copied just for the sake of the pleasure of criticising him, it is as (un)obejective as blindly ignoring his copies. If you go back to oldresponses, you'll find a few instances where it has been generally accepted and understood that he copied. A few 10's of songs compared to the 1000's he has scored. And it is not as if guys like me raised objection to each and evry instance.
As for waiting to hear more lifts of Raja, I would like to help you, chandy. Obviously, you are sitting there ,fingers crossed, unable to wait to learn more of Raja's lifts, well, I take it my calling to help you. Here's a list of Raja's lifts:
1. He 'lift'ed Bharathiraaja from a non-entity to Iyakkunar Imayam
2. He 'lift'ed Manrathnam to a director of repute.
3.He 'lift'ed the sagging,nay, non-existent careers of Murali, Ramarajan,Mohan....the list is endless...
4. He 'lifted' the range of TFM to encompass a wide territory.
And so on....
You want to know more lifts..tell me, I'll come up with more :)

Raj!
A lovely list of `lifts'!
a real tribute to Raja!
While all of us agree that around .0001% of the IR songs show partial inspirations, it is an undeniable fact that he pioneered many of the innovations, methods and trends in TFM while also ensuring commercial success for over 2 decades.
It is only human to err! I must be correct when adding that even all those immortals like Mozart would have inspirations from their peers / predecessors as all were only human!
