The National Award for best actor last year goes to Anil Kapoor!!! This, for his so called "intense performance" in Pukar.
Raveena Tandon bags it for her unreleased film, 'Daman'.
A Tehelka-like expose' on the the award committee is the need of the hour IMO.
I will await more details and post them soon.

you can't compare Inji Iduppazhaga with PAyale Chumn...Inji song has a greater "countryside musical flavors" and AM has totally failed to achieve in his copied songs. Copy does not come nowhere near to original....What's the basic qualification to become a Jury member...who decides that??

I think the award to Bhava was to appease IR for not giving him the national award. Wasted 30 minutes of my time listening to 'refugee' on raaga.com :)

Kiru,
I'm not sure if the award to Bhava is to appease her father. Then proabhu should have won award to appease shivaji and so on... Bhava was chosen for the award for her "(in)abilities" in singing. period! and that shows the quality of the jury and the award itself!

"Inji idduppazhaga" is actually inspired from a old hindi song. SPB mentioned it long before. The hindi number is
"Yeh dil deevana hai"
"dilto devanai"
"deevana dil hai ye"
"di deevana"
THe tune of the original and "thannan thaniththirukka" part of Inji song match very well.
As far as Chitra is concerned, why blame a sing for what an MD had done. Her version was excellent. You should give credit to her for have sung the song very well inspite of knowing the fact that it is a direct copy number.

Minmini, I believe, won the award for year 92. The film was released in August of 92.
About Inji...
I also wondered why the jury gave the award to a copied song. But now I guess the original(thought to be) is also derived from somewhere:-). Janaki sang the song. Likewise Chithra too. Anyhow, the music is not the same. I like the duet version in hindi better, but I like the solo version in tamil better.
RajaG,
Have you ever heard the proverbs 'sevidan kaathila oothina sangu':-)). I agree with you.
To be frank, I don't understand how they go about judging in N.Award. Let's go back before 97 and try to see it from there.
From what I know, UnniKrishan won the year 94 award for Ennavalae. This was a great song, a difficult song and an extremely popular song, even today. So was Yesudas's 'Pramadhavanam' or Chithra's Paadariyaean Padipariyean'. On the other hand, songs like 'chinna chinna aasai' by Minmini, Poorale ponnuthaiyee by SwarnaLatha and 'manjal prasadhavum' by Chithra won awards. I assumed that these songs won the awards on their popularity, at least the initial one and the latter two due to popularity and situation. Regardless, although the latter three songs donn't seem to be technically difficult, they had in them something that mesmerized the audience(a majority) and was regarded and is still regarded as great songs. But to come to Bavatharini's 'Mayil Pola'...it had nothing of this nature. Even if you excuse technical difficulty, which we have seen is not necessary, you have to admit that Bava's song had no flavour at all to have been given the merit. There is an immense difference between a song like 'sendoorapoove, sendhoorapoove' and 'mayil pola', even if the genre is the same(basically, folkish).

That sounds a little strange for me. SPB did not sing this song then on what context he makes this comment!

SPB mentioned how some songs sound similar and maybe interpreted as "inspiration" during his show in the Bay Area (2000 tour- He could have mentioned this in other concerts too) He mentioned
Kurukku ChiruththavaLey - Saavan Kaa mahinaa
vaNNam konda veNnilavEy - kabHi khudh pE kabHi haalaath pe
in addition to the one above.

SPB didn't sing the song. I have mentioned this example earlier also. I didn't give the songs name. SPB said that one IR told him how he got inspired from that old hindi song and how he incorporated it in the DM sone. SPB was mentioning about how great people get inspire from each others work. (You won't agree ... anyway.) He mentioned the MDs name but I forgot. He song both the songs and showed the similarity.
Now as I mentioned, the "Thannan thaniththirukka"
part of the tamil song matches with "Yeh dil deevana hai". Sing for your self and see. I could see the similarity clearly. Again, I am the one who understands the diff. bet. Copying and insp. So I am not complaining. I applies to all MD.

Talking about all the songs that won National awards, the song that I think deserved due recognition and failed to make it is - "MAnjolai KilliThano"..
What a pity .. Jayachandran deserved an award for the song.

I knew the song a little but I don't know the songs link business and all. One point is my machine has got no audio system . So, even if I wish to listen one thru net, I am not able to do it. So, all your examples of copying allegation could not be properly checked by me. Okay.. that my problem.

The plot thickens:
"National Award? No, Thanks!"
says celebrated Bengali director as he declines to accept this year's National Award for the Best Bengali film Dekha. This is what he has to say:
"This year's National Awards have become farcical with reports of rigged results in a section of press indicating that the names of some winners had been decided even before the official declaration."
(-Anil & Raveena were reportedly celebrating their 'WIN' two days before they were out!-).
"I don't want my film to be clubbed with an award tainted with controversies."
Bold move by a bold man. What say?

Hey, I missed his name in my above post: he is Gautam Ghosh, director of such award winning films as 'PAr', 'Antarjali Yatra' and 'Padma Nadir Majhi'. Interestingly, he was the chairperson for last year's National Awards. He had then lamented the fact that (i>Hey Ram did not get a couple of Main awards that it deserved.
