Folks:
I mostly grew up listening to IR, but I have listened and very much admired MSV's music too. I think he probably the one who devised the concept of current form of film song music, with stanzas separated by interludes. I think he probably the one of the first who brought5 Western classical style into the interludes of his songs. I can understand why IR has reverence for MSV. In early IR hits I got a sense of influence of MSV on IR. In a recent public speech, I read in Vikatan, that MSV was emotional when he mentioned "Ilayaraja ennai pondra Isai Kalaigharhalai vazhavaithu kondu irukkirar"
I have made conscious effort to go back and get his diamonds and they are wonderful listening pleasure. I think his music is as gem as IR's, it is just unfortunate that the technology was not so great when he was at his prime. Here are some I enjoyed recently ( I am sure IR fans would enjoy too)
1. Manghayaril Maharani, Monghani Poel Ponn Mehni..
(Film: Avalukkendru Pru Manam)
2. Maathamo Aaavani...
(Film: Uththaravindri Ulle Vaa)
3. Kamban Yehmaandann..
)Film: Nizhal Nijamagirathu)
4. Pottu Vaiththa Mughamo...
(Sumathi en Sundari)
5. Pattaththu Raani Paarkkum Paarvai..
(Sivantha Monn)
6. Malligai En Mannan Mayanghum..
(Dheergha Sumanghali)
7. Thendrallukku Ennum Vayadhu..
(Payanam)
8. Enghe Nimmathi..
(Puthiya Paravai)
9. Aaru Manameh Aaru...
(Aandavan Kattalai)
10. Neeyum Nanumah, Kannah Neeyum Nanumah..
(Ghowravam)
These songs are available in CDs (all AAD, obviously, decently recorded)
Best Sad Songs of Sivaji by TMS
(RTS 5007, All Sell Audio Labs Inc., 4220 Patzker Rod., Racine, E.W.I. 53405, USA
Melodies Forever
(CD PMLP 5309, EMI, The Gramaphone Company of India)
Padaithaane Brammadevan
Tamil Film Hits of SPB
(CD PMLP 5319, EMI, Gramaphone Company of India)
Smashing Hits of SPB
(CD PMLP 5039, EMI, Gramaphone Co...)
These CDs also contain some IR's best wons, so I am very pleased with these!
Could anyone share with the folks here about good CDs containing MSV songs? Or where one can get his (old) records (HMV, 77 RPM?) in India ?
I will Appreciate the info.

I think I remember IR saying in one interview that MSV is a great guy because he designed the format of Tamil Film Songs. IR humbly mentioned that he is just following the format set by MSV.
One of the reasons I have great respect for IR (apart from his musical talents).

Yeah, the relations between maestro and MSV are really heart-warming. Maestro always addresses MSV as "Anne". And MSV has lots of regards for IR's talents too.

Let's not forget the voice of MSV. Just before the title song in 'Thappu Thalangal'(78) he sings a cracker of a small musicless song...'Maanam kavarndu varuum, Megam odi varum'. another is 'enakkoru kadali irukkindraan aval 7 swarangalil irukkindraal...'. There's more.search.

Talking of MSV as a singer, one remembers how he burst onto the scene really with Allah Allah from Thuglaq.
Another touching number is Unakkenna Kuraichchal Nee oru Raja, Vandhal varattum mudhumai from Velli Vizha. Even though this KB film's MD was V Kumar, I believe VK insisted on MSV for this song.
There have been several other asareeri numbers from MSV including :
Sambo siva sambo - Ninaithaaley Inikkum
Sindu nadhi poove - Ram Robert Rahim
Ikkaraikku Akkarai - Akkarai Pacchai
Uppai Thindravan Thanni- ????
Does anyone remember a different MSV singing a duet with LR in Nilavey Nee Satchi. The song is Nee Ninaithaal Neraththiley Yethetho Nadakkum. Ths song is picturised on Jaishankar and V A Nirmala in a stuck elevator, if my memory serves me right.

Srinivasan,
Yes! 'Nee Ninaithaal Neraththiley Yethetho Nadakkum' is one of my favourites too.
You are correct about the picturisation of this song. It (picturisation) is similar to the song in 'Maro Charithra' (Telugu).

I'm interested in knowing the song composed by MSV which IR always mentions as his favorite.
In the film, Sowkar Janaki sings it (I think she's a widow in the film).

I have a song sung by MSV, composed by Ilaiyaraja (if my notes are correct!), which goes like:
"Aaththora maettu maelai
aaru muzha saelai katti
aadi asainthu varaal
en akkaa maghal........"
Can anyone confirm this information?
Thanks.

I think the song you are talking about is
"Maalai Pozhudin Mayakkaththile Naam" set in Bagesri from the film "Bhagyalakshmi" with music by MSV-TKR starring Sowcar as a young widow. Hero is GG.

Hi Folks!
I am an ardent fan of MSV's music.
I rate his songs to be the best ever composed in terms of perfection and completeness.
Almost all those composed with TKR were super hits. After the split, I especially liked the duets of MSV.
It had them all:
Great orchestration, soothing rhythm, interludes that inter-twined with the preceding and following stanzas to hold the continuity, great and complete tunes, beautiful lyrics and perfect rendition.
The best thing about MSV's songs are that his lullabies and many solos by PS are 'singable' even by a woman who sells flower on the roads: They are all set in a medium pitch with soothing tunes.
To name a very few...
1. Oru Raja Raniyidam
2. Aagaya Pandhalile
3. Ulagamengum Ore Mozhi
4. Sirithaal Thanga Padhumai
5. Oru Naalile Uravaanadhe
6. Thirumbi Vaa Uyire Thirumbi Vaa
7. Chinnavalai Mugam Sivandhavalai
8. Oru Dharam Ore Dharam
9. Chandrodayam Oru Pennaanadho
10. Engirundho Aasaigal
11. Naan Parthadhile Aval
12. Rajavin Paarvai Raniyin
13. Kannan Pirandhan Engal Kannan
14. Chakkara Katti Rajathi
15. Kunguma Pottin Mangalam
16. Ponnezhil Poothadhu Pudhi Vaanil
17. Kuyilaaga Naan Irundhenna
18. Thedi Varum Deiva Sugam
19. Othaiyadi Paadhaiyile
20. Jillendru Katru Vandhadho
21. Vizhiye Vizhiye Unakkenna Velai
22. Kanne Kaniye Muthe Maniye Aruge Vaa
23. Iniyavale Endru Paadi Vandhen
24. Nalladhu Kanne Kanavu Kanindhadhu Nandri
25. Sirippil Undaagum Raagathile
...and many more...
ps: What I don't like in IR's songs is they are highly reusable(?). In the sense, you can cut an interlude from one song and patch it in another and yet not find any difference. The essence of my feeling is that, the interludes in IR's songs lacks continuity with the tune of the song itself in most of the songs composed by him. It's hard to identify a song just by listening to the interludes between two stanzas. (Ofcourse, there are many numbers which qualify in all respects!)

Ofcourse, IR has scored far more exceeding number of films in the Music Industry than MSV. But if we count the number of hits in a film averaging to 70-90% and sometimes 100%, I think MSV (with or without TKR) outclasses IR in that department!
And then, from what I've heard and read of MDs, IR is the fastest composer in India, or may be in the world!

Karthi,
IMO, MSV & Raja are both great in their own way when it comes to composing tunes. But IR outclasses MSV in orchestration and those complex interludes, which I would say, MSV could never have done.
If u see MSV & TKR combo, the orchestration will be better than the ones by MSV alone(bfore & after split). This is bcos, MSV did the composing part and the arrangement and orchestration were done by TKR.
Coming to the interludes, raja has rarely (probably 5-10 songs of his 3500+ compositions)repeated the interludes. But , MSV has always (ther might be some exceptions )repeated the interludes bfore both (sometimes 3)the stanzas.
I can identify any song of IR just by listening to the interludes. I have seen only one instance of one interlude making into another song. The violin piece before the 2 stanza of "poongAtru pudhidhAnadhu" is repeated in "en vAzhvilE varum anbE vA" in thambikku endha ooru, that too because, the original song was the hindi version of poongAtru.
I'm in NO way trying to say IR is better than MSV or anything of that sort. I had some opinions which differs from that of yours.
