Hello Folks ,
The story is here is not on Illayaraja will
hit his 1000 movies .but if his competitors will
ever reached half of the amount he composed.
Remember Rahman reached barely 100 and there
is comments on his repetition in his composition
, Deva 200 movies..no comments ..you all know him better.MSV about 300 ++ and lost in thin air.
But Raja 786th movie Hey Ram is talk of the town,
city , grammam...all the world where indian leave.
The thing still fresh as ,I find in IR is he still fresh like in AnnaKilli and 16 Vayathelee.
Remember his word 'I can teach people to play
music but I can't teach them to compose because it
should comes in the blood'
That speak for all.Composing for one movie is
doing the songs and the background music for
2 hours movie . Now you can multiply with 786
and it all happen within 25 years. That is about
30 movies a year and or 2 or 3 movies a month and
sound still fresh.
Vintage Raja..! and Incomparable..!
Raja..Raja Than
Bless you..

mu.ar.balu,
You can get the list from http://www.raajangahm.com/ric/index.html
IR's 800th film is Usire...so he is short of 200 films for the 1000 mark.

i dont think he will make it.
As he is the untouchable of tamil industry as of now. You may argue friends and some small movies, but overall factor he is getting competition everywhere like he ran away from tamil to kannada now there is also competition and he then turned to malayalam now there is vidyasaga and whole others.
Its not IR dearth of talent or somethings its just that people got used and tired of music thats all.
I can see the fireworks starting already so go ahead shoot them.

Days of tabla ,dolak and violin culture is over IR!! And I dont think IR is the person to revive tamil music industry to the golden days.
Sorry folks!!

I don't want IR to score for movies with stupid storyline like Thenali or Mudhalvan. He has done enough of it and proved much more. I would like to see him score for movies which he likes, I want to see him score the music he likes (like How to name it, Nothing but wind). I don't think he has to sit and compete against Vidyasagar or likes and please DF'ers. He was way way beyond these trivial things.

uv,
dont talk in this tone about a composer the likes of which we are not going to see in our lifetime.you sound sick.if ARR composes 10 songs a year without reminding any one of his /others' old songs, then you can boldly post such statements!i will pull this posting of yours out of archives whwn IR reaches his 100th movie.just wait!

Since 196, IR is scoring an average of 12 movies a year (Source: Raajangahm). At that rate he needs around 17 years to reach 1000 movies.
His highest productivity was in 54 movies (1984 & 1992). At that rate, he will need only 4 more years.
An average of the max and min gives 33. At that rate, he needs around 6 years.
Hope to see more such logical deductions :-))))

UV, your statement As he is the untouchable of tamil industry as of now may not be 100% correct. It appears to me that he's hell bent on promoting his sons in TF and probably accepting only those who are insisting his name in spite of his reluctance. (A clear case is Sethu Bala's second film where YSR scores, even IR has sung in that movie. By normal film industry sentiments, a very successful combo may not be so easily dismantled. The fact that he sings speaks against your `untouchability' statement)
This may not be the case with MY, KA fields where his sons are anyway not expected to make money. In addition, there IR can enjoy a bit of exhibiting his creativity. In any case he never aspired to be no 1 in those fields in any point of his career and the statements like VS keeping IR at bay in MFM is absurd.
Why IR may not be thrilled about this `1000' after all...
All strictly IMHO:-)

XYZ...
I agree with you when you say that IR is one of the greatest composers of our times and I fully agree with IR's genius...but when you say :
"if ARR composes 10 songs a year without reminding any one of his /others' old songs..."
YOu should remember that until 1990 most of India had just 2 TV channels...a few local radio stations, a few film publications and no internet ! With the explosion in and expansion in global media...a farmer even in the remotest village can have access to any TV channel in the world...so IR music was the only quality music we were exposed to...but the media explosion puts 100 times the pressure on ARR to come out with something totally different..even IR is not able to bring out something different..does this say something ?

I mean IR's music, a few pop songs and a few Hindi songs on radio or TV were what we were exposed to in INdia...not much of competition there for IR..and even then I have heard WCM lovers accuse IR for heavy lifting and influences from Mozart, Bach and other WCM composers...which millions of Tamilians like me were not exposed to...
Now with the media explosion, everybody is being exposed to music from all over the world...now here comes the real challenge...standout with brilliant music and yet stay the most popular...IR seems to be floundering here while ARR has made the impact...so your theory that ARR's songs sound similar doesn't hold much water..even IR has standard beats and rhythms which I used to play on my dining table at home as a kid and irritate my mom !

on: Sat May 12 02:26:33 EDT 2001
Please also add all the combinations already used by IR in his 20 year career comprising of 4000 songs (as mentioned in this DF) and MSV before that...so I think ARR and the new MDs have a lot on their plate to contend with....

there is no more music at the existing plane of musical thought. raja has the secrets to a lot more musical thoughts that are possible on a different platform/s. i am seeing that in many of his recent compositions though raja is sticking to regular fiml songs format. arr is not a surprise at all, he cannot challenge raja on turf perfected by raja, so he is taking every body to a totally differnt ball game, slow rhythms( unbelievably boring nonmelodious crap) he is a lucky one hit wonder. the only works that redeems arr as a composer is minsara kanavu. i don't know how the heck this crap skit musician wrote those 2 unbelievable 'musical' type songs. (let me remind raja has done it long ago and one great example is yengey yen kadhali in enakkul oruvan.)
raja's musical ideas and his ability to create new platforms will remain unsurpassed, why? the age of music has ended with him!!!!! arr is mereely squeesing crap out of the juice!

Don't under estimate IR's ability.
He has done 20000 concerts in 7 years(source raaja.com).
So this won't be an impossible task.

cosmician,
i have been listening to WCM for the past 15 years-it was mainly thru IR's heavy use of WCM , i was into wcm-I should say this has only shown me how complicated his music is.admitted, he is heavily influenced by bach(the best eg is the opening of poonkadhave where he sounds like a carnatic bach).I am yet to listen to a tune completely copied by raaja.if your freinds said he has copied from WCM, give me egs with details.I consider my listening of WCM fairly extensive.so please enlighten me if yo can come up with a convincing eg.
while you say it was media explosion which makes ARR come up with different tunes,IR was at a different pressure-sheer workload.at his peak,he was composing music for around 50 plus movies per year-and what gems he came up with!ARR is scoring only one tenth of what IR was doing at his peak-but he is s...o repetitive-i am not exaggearting when i sayhis EVERY single song reminds me of a previous tune-listen to his latest lagaan-he has repeated the ganana song note by note..
listen to bharathi-all songs and tunes are fresh.remember, this was not writing songs for IR's tunes but Bharathiyar songs were set to fresh tunes .and songs from freinds-manjal poosum and thendral songs were so fresh.
the irony to your miusic globalisation argument is that -but for this , i would have never heard of ace of base,dr.alban(i dont listen to non-WCM albums at all except for beatles and abba-i suppose the loss is mine)

i was travelling by car, when i popped a cassette which i have not listened to for a long time-i hit gold!songs from alaigal oivadhillai, kadhal oviyam, raajapaarvai, nenjathai killadhe, mellathirandhadhu kadhavu.sheer bliss!
that is the feeling we fans get when we listen to his music-it is like returning home after a long time.Thank you maestro!!(the true and last maestro of Indian music!)
