Bharadwaj together with a core group of singers are in Malaysia right now, performing a concert in Genting Highlands in conjunction with Vaanavil's Sixth Anniversary.
Since the programme is being trasmitted "live" over Vaanavil, let me attempt to provide TFM page's first ever live telecast!

Anuratha & SP sing O podu!
SP Bala finishes with his inimitable O podu followed by his laugh and the audience go in a frenzy!
A special instrumental presentation honouring all the instrumentalists followed.
Then there was the usual "fight" between the various drums and tabla, which ended with a great "we love Malaysia" finale with fireworks and glitter.
And with that, this more than 4 hour concert and my live presentation comes to an end!
Ithuvarai en thoguppai padithavarkkum, padithu sirithavarkkum, santhosham pattavarkkum, elanamaai ninaithavarkkum, vanthanam suba mangalam! :)

Thanks and congrats for a wonderful and painstaking write-up. Not having attended/seen on TV a concert for long, you really satisfied my need.

This is best and longest description of a stage performance in newtfmpage I think. It was really vicarious. Good work aaLavandhan.

Good work aalavandhaaan.... u really gave a "LIVE" one :-)......
it was really good of Bharadwaj to sing other MD's song.... man, this guy has good heart (well, atleast to sing on such a public stage - cuase i remember some long years back, when Chandrabose was asked to sing a IR song in some stage, he refused, and said something bad, resulting in the fans shouting him down).....
and hmm... u guys are lucky to hear SPB sing.... i wish samething happens in many of the up coming movies (with IR only).....

Aalavandaan,
Good reporting. Congrats! You ahve covered all the important aspects of the show!
I came in 15 minutes late, for the show, as I was caught with some journalists and the Astro staff outside the main hall.
The hall was almost packed to capacity. My observations showed that it was SP Bala who actually stole the show. The vast majority of the audience had turned up for SP Bala. He received thunderous applause for all his few songs. The songs where that received thunderous applause were:
Tere Mere Beech Mein from Ek Duje Ke Lie
Sankaraaa from Sankarabharanam. The audience had not forgotten this movie.
Ye Mera Prem, Patru Pazukar from Sangam. Bala said that he used to shed tears when attempting to sing the songs of Mohd Rafi. He had a great liking for Rafi.
All his small pieces from the medley received good reponse.
I was invited for a special dinner with the artistes immediately after the event. SP Bala came for a while and went off. The other artistes stayed longer.
The journalists who were with me shared the following comments and views:
1. The crowd had come for the sake of SP Bala.
2. Barathwaj, is a new MD and has very few songs to his credit. Most of the songs sung did not receive good response. Some of the songs were not even heard of by the audience.
3. The few hit song did save the name of Barathwaj-like O podu, Oru Povezhuthum Kavithai.
4. There was a mixture of old timers and youngsters. The youngsters seem to have enjoyed the songs while the old timers were visibly happy in the last 20 minutes where old songs were sung in medley. It was very obvious that even the singers enjoyed singing the old songs. Anuratha for instance joined other singers, though she was to stick to her contribution alone. There was noithng but joyful smiles on the faces of the these singers as they sung the old songs in pieces. The impact that the old singers and old MDS had created was visibly noticed when the singers sand the songs. The only original singer around was SP bala, and so his songs were original and natural. Others were imitation voices. I remember Bala receving thunderous welcome as he sang his own hits like :
Raja Kaiya Vachaa
Ilamai ennum Poongaatru
Ye Atha Athorma Variya
Avaloru Navarasa Nadakam
Pottu Vaitha Mugamo
Adiye Manam Nilluna Nikkathadi
Singari Sarakku Nalla Sarakku
Oruvan Oruvan Muthalaali
Anuratha did very well when she sang Elantha Pazham Elantha Pazham
The other song that was very much welcome was Mama maama Maama from Kumudam sung by Anuratha and Sujatha.
Baraathwaj sang Adi ennadi Rakkamma, but the sound did not come out well.
Somehow Shalini sang only one song- Unnai Onru Ketpen.
5. The show was for songs. In the event the songs did not make ther marks, the dances that accompanied the songs did balance things up.
6. There was no earlier indication of a live telecast. When the show satrted we were told that the event was shown live. Some would not have turned up had the had the slightest indication of the live telecast.
(A midnight conversation with those who saw it live had nothing to boast of, except that the camera work was good, with few good songs.)
7. There was also a view that SP Bala himself could have done all the show himself, as he was the only "star of the night"
8.The show was different in the sense that the local singers were given chance to sing with veteran singers from Tamilnadu.Barathwaj allowed SP Bala to sing the songs composed by other MDs.
9. A glance at the concert hall indicated that there were more old timers than the youngsters. Most of the regular visitors commented that the show was "Not too bad and not too good"
10. The Genting Highlands atmoshpere made some difference. Seeing the artisites in person had its own impact. The hard work in organising the show with no hitches was another plus point. The Deepavali mood has set in to add to the spirit.
11.Boring part of course was, as Aalavandan rightly said, the ceremonial part with one Minister and one deputy minister coming in like "Siva Poojayil Karadi Puguntha Maathiri" But that was the only slot to honour the artistes.
By and large there were mixed feelings and mixed comments.
Thank you.
Manisegaran

Thank you very for the kind words Nazir, Geeth, Prabu, MS, Sabesan and Manisegar saar.
I too have to agree with Mohd Ariff to a certain extent as four hours plus of just songs (and that too of one MD) and nothing else is nothing less than a feat. Some comedy, with a dosage of audience participation and some other MD's songs would have added variety to the concert.
But I am willing to overlook all these for the simply polished presentation.
Mani saar, I believe Bharadwaj together with very few MDs like ARR and Vidhyasaagar have produced ratio-wise very popular songs. Except for one or two songs, the rest of the songs are indeed very popular with the younger crowd. You would have witnessed the reception among the younger crowd for O podu. :)
As for Star quality Anuradha Sriram is huge star material. Also Unnikrishnan.
SP Bala is a legend and youngsters respect him like how they would respect, say Sivaji Ganesan. But who they really want to see are the Simrans and Mathavans. And the above two fit this bill very well.
I was particularly impressed with Anuradha and god forbid this, I actually prefer her version of O podu to SP Balas sacharin coated version. :)
I think she did extremely well with her rendition of old songs.
My regret is they could have added at least 50% of songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Thanks once again for your comments and wishing you a happy Deepavali. :)

the best part of the programme was that some of the songs were not sung by their original singers....( spb & sujatha - mottugale)..it was so interesting to hear them sing songs sung by their fellow singers, (or even better than them ;))
