Indian roots, identity and music
- hmmm... IMO, Bharath Bala's VM (I hope this is agreable to you !) doesn't exactly reflect Indian roots, Indian identity or Indian music. If anything, it only reflects the Western influence on Indians.
About my being stuck on ARR's VM (as opposed to just VM),
ARR's "vandemarataram" reached people world wide (indians and non-indians).
- says it all.

Srinath,
when I said that, I had to differentiate between the Original VM and ARR's VM.
Looks like you have something against ARR.

hello Srinath.... enna indha threadkku vandhalee edavadhu sandailathan mudipeengalaaa :-))))))
Hello Ajit.... whether Srinath has something against ARR or not is the issue...
Indian roots, identity and music
certainly what ARR does is not Indian music... its pure westernised music...

Ajit, the only thing I have against ARR is his music. I don't like most of it. But that shouldn't prevent me from talking about it, should it ? I am not even criticizing ARR's music here - only its pointing out its irrelevance to patriotism. Please continue your discussions and keep me out of them ! I'll certainly keep myself out of here :-)

I'yo Sirnath Sir, Please continue your discussions sir, Feedom of Speech, you can say anything and everything sir. I guess my point wasn't made clear, let me try one more time.
For instance, in India, don't we listen to Micheal Jackson and Madonna? Just like that I think the world should be exposed to Indian (thus Tamil) music. Now I understand it is not "pure" Indian Music that ARR has comeup with, but when you go international, it is not easy to be "pure". This is where remixing comes into play. You keep the Indian rethym and tunes, but mix them with a little beat and other "instrumentals".
Remember "Lambada"? Have you listen to the original? it is so different from the "world release". Same with "Maccarena" is was remixed (many times). But did you see the power of these music pieces? Everyone know about this music and thus know at least a little about where is came from. No one knew anything when the originals were released!
As you know, ARR is not the only one from India (with world misic), there is Hariharan (Colonial Cousins) and then there is Alisha, How about Apache Indian? Which of this is "Pure" Indian music? IR has the British sympony, do you think it is "pure" indian music?
But there is so much to be proud of from all these composers, now I think this music promotes Indian roots, identity and music.
I also find it very difficult to agree that ARR's music is "pure westernised" music. What is "westernized"? Take the instrument Violin, is that Indian? But which TFM director doesn't use it?
Is Samgamam pure westernized music?
In my opinion we(Indians/Tamils) are behind with remixes. A lot of the "Western" bands are using Indian music to market their music. Eg. Aerosmith. Eyes Wide Shut (the movie soundtrack). Ace of Base (there was a Bhangra remix to the famous "all that she wants" song)
Have you listend to any of the "Rebirth of Cool" CDs? It is Acid Jazz music, and every CD has an Indian number, do you think it is produced by Indians? Someone else is making money out of our music, and this is going to happen no matter what, now why can't we make use out of this?
And this goes to the culture as well, take a look at what happend to "Henna" (womem's make up for a wedding or other events - the red artistic drawings on their palms and feet - I think it is called "Henna") Anyway, in North America this has become a fashion, and who are the Fashion Designers? Indians? I don't think so.
Same thing with the "GAP" fashions, they have the "Gurutha" as a summer shirt where did they get the idea?
What I am trying say is that, we should look into ways of promoting our music and fashion to the bigger world, so that it helps promoting our roots, identity and culture.
Sorry to take the thread away from ARR's new releases, On that note, I got an email early this week from Pyramid Records(upon my request) and their next ARR release is "Rhythm", don't know when sorry.

I watched 'sangamam' on video recently and was very much disappointed with re-recording. The lip movements don't sychronize with dialogues and so are the choreography and songs. It sounded as if i was watching a dubbed movie. Also the movie has borrowed good number of pages from the scripts of 'thillaanaa mohanaambaal' . The first half- hour will make you think as if it is a remake of TM. "sowkiyama" = "marainthirunthae paarkum", "maargazhi thingaL"="nalamthaanaa". There is no 'vaidy' character in this version. "varAga nathikkarai"(such a nice melody) is a misfit in the movie. The hero is supposed to be performing some tamil folk dance , instead he sings this kawali and makes gestures of a typical kawali singer. kamban koothaadikkum kawali pAdalukkum enna thodarbu?

Aruvi (and others who have echoed his opinion),
To give a different interpretation to Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana is, IMO, not a violation of the patriotic feelings of individuals or groups. In the U.S. it is very common for all artists to add their own stamp to the "Star Spangled Banner," but they are no less patriotic.
I guess sometimes we have double standards (I am only making a general statement and definitely NOT applicable to anybody in the DF) when it comes to Indian values. I believe there was an objection by an Asian Indian interest group to one of the episodes of Xena - the warrior princess which did not accurately portray the situation/dialogues uttered by Krishna (other gods??). Yet we do that regularly in comic situations in our movies. Are we raising objections only because we smell $$$. Also, did any of you notice that when they are showing Tom Cruise witnessing a Sexual orgy in the movie "Eyes Wide Shut", the background voice was chanting, YES!, 'parithraaNaaya saadhunaam...' from bhagvad geethaa. What are your thoughts on that?

I agree with rajaG. There are numerous Indian Movies which portray our deities in rather obscene ways, or even the songs, like "Thirupathi Ezhumalai Venkatesa..". No one seems to even object or express his/her displeasure. It all started with the song "dummmara dum..".
Why this double standards?
