P Susheela or Vani Jairam - who is the better singer?

  TNS, no doubt, PS is a legend, but your figures are way off-mark. PS was at the very top in Tamil and Telugu only in 60-61 period and continued to dominate the TFM scene till around '73 after which VJ came into prominance, and then it was the 'SJ revival' phase. She might have continued to rule to roost in TeFM till the mid-80s.

  1954 to 1980,she wasNO1 in tamil.1977to 80 she shared it with SJ...and VAANI was never close to PS anytime in 1973 to 1980....PS had her share of top songs till1980 in tamil...Even IR prefered her over VJ during this period...TNS..

  I agree with TNS on the facts. PS's career span from 1952 to until 1985, where she was used by all MDs including GR/KVM/VR/VK/SG/IR. After 1985 she had quite a few songs in a year than before, especially in Tamil. Some of the best known songs were IR/PS combination. Between 1985-present, she was not at the peak. As regards Telugu FM she was dominant until 1990 or so. Though I like all singers, VJ was never close to PS in terms of her standing for nearly about 50 years now, the only one after LM. There are truly two legends in Indian Playback singing and they are LM and PS.

  But does that make her QUALITATIVELY BETTER than VJ? IMHO LM,PS and asha would all have struggled in "aanathi neeyara" and "brocheva.."

  Well PS has been a more popular and a better singer. In fact I like VJ too. How can we say for certainty that all other singers would have struggled with the songs you have quoted? That is a very subjective opinion that comes out of immaturity and sheer arrogance. I dont agree with that. Quality...that is something we can talk about. PS 's career speaks for itself. I am not making that up. Artists still look up to her for the indelible mark she has left in TFM/TEFM. They call her "Ponvizha Kanda Padagi".
  
  Every soul has its day and time and PS had hers. VJ had hers too, but for a short time. Can PS bring back her golden touch like yesteryears...may be not. Thats a topic for another day. Avoid comparing singers. Lets talk about their individual contributions instead of comparisons.

  I just heard "Aanathineeyara" for the 2nd time after a few months. The impact was more than the last time. I can't understand a bit of Telugu. (Adhu Telugu-dhaane?!). But I was moved to tears. It's amazing to hear this song and "Happiest Moment" one after the other!
  
  A few days ago TNS branded me as a psycho saying that I favor PS when others oppose her and speak against her when others are in her favor! This is not a question of how many people favor PS and how many don't. It's a matter of what we are dealing with at that moment when we support or oppose.
  
  Even now, PS is my most favorite singer - I rate her to be the best of all the singers of the Indian Film World. She's MY first, second and third best singer.
  
  But that doesn't mean that I have to put other singers down. Be it Lata or Asha or Janaki or SPB or Vani Jayaram - if it's a somethng worth hearing then I give myself to it. Until a few years ago, I was obsessed with PS' voice and in the process lost sight of some of her shortcomings. After hearing/reading from other "posters" like Sriram Lakshman (Mr.Observer!), RajaG and many, many others, my opinions nowadays tend to be more objective than subjective - or may I say that I started to gain sight of others' pluses better! Infact, I have started to hear other singers' songs more and more.
  
  To brand VJ as a Bhajan Singer is arrogant. For instance, Anaathineeyara is not a bhajan. It is imbued with great feeling. And if one can't see it, he never sees it.
  
  Nowadays I am learning to not rate a singer as better than another. I have (atlast) started to feel it's kind of childish. Real comparisons can me made only if the same songs are being sung by different artistes for the same situation - which, as you see it, is just not possible.
  
  I am not contradicting here. A few paras above I said PS is my best. That is true to me. But if you call me for a debate on who is best or better, then I would not take part in it. All the same I cannot stand if someone ridicules an artist. Which is what I have been doing so far in this thread.

  But you seem to have included my name in the list. Karthi, I do sincerely agree with you. But you see, the very fact that we have a predetermined definition for music is pretty childish . By participating in a forum, we enter the world of relativity and therefore our prejudiced opinions on music and our 'favourite' artistes and the reverence we have for them enter our systems. This is marked by instinctive reactions/sarcasm when a fellow poster 'encroaches' on our territory and says something that threatens to rob us of our musical identity (strong leanings towards certain artistes) and your's truly is no exception. Probably, allowing music itself to drop off our systems is a growth. I can understand what Ilayaraja meant when he said that.

  PS anytime is a better singer!!!Nobody cant sing the songs she've sung over these years....the feel is totally different in her voice...be it a KANNA KARUMAI NIRA KANNA or JAVVADA MEDAYILE or off recent MUTHUMANI MALA or KANNUKKU MAI AZAGHU...she is the GREATEST.
  It is just the people in south india doesnt know how to respect great artistes like her .She in noway inferior to Lata Mangeshkar,but why does people in north treat Lata like a god and why doesnt people in south realise to give the same kind of respect and recognition to PS.And please forget comparing PS with Vani jayaram...PS is leagues ahead of all these singers.

  I am from kerala,As a malayali,I feel that p.susheela can only share the name 'The nightingale of India' with Lata.It should be like that because India means the commplete Indian subcontinent,somebody thinks that India means only north ,that is foolishness.P.susheela's malayalam songs under the music of G.Devarajan are really the gems.she is a legend
