Hi all,
Have u all forgotten the great P.Susheela? I think she could be adjudged the most versatile singer. Pity was that she belonged to the old era where the south hardly got recognition (in the same line were artists like Sivaji, Ranga Rao, TMS , Savithri and others).
One could literally guess who the actress was by hearing Susheela voice and to know her versitality one should listen to songs like 'Aduthaathu....' (Ethir Neecha), 'Naan satham pottu dhan...', kaadhal siragai, and high pitch songs like 'Sonnadhu nee dhaana', 'unnai ondru ketpen', 'naalai indha velai'....
I agree with Ravi (an earlier response) that Janaki's voice is a bit screeching in high pitches.

There is no doubting the fact that S.Janaki is easily the most versatile singer of our country along with Asha Bhonsle. IR probably stopped using her anymore probably because of her age.Anyway, SJ is GREAT with or without any music director including IR.Obviously, she is not the SJ of the 60s,70s and to some extent 80s.I do agree that at times she does sound shrill. But no singer on this earth is perfect and each have their own pluses and minuses.I am a great fan of SJ and cherish hundreds of her songs in Kannada and other languages.Without doubt, she is one of the greatest singers ever born in our country. And I dont agree that she could not compete with SPB in some songs.Maybe she had become too old/ill at that point.(Female singers age faster than male singers) But SJ is one exceptional female singer who consistently outsang her male counterparts in her heydays.

Hello Janaki Fans,
I admire(d) Janaki for many things. First and the foremost is her POTTU(i mean bindhi), when i saw two people, MS and Janaki without that pottu, i really felt sad. Second her versatile voice. And on top of any thing, i donot agree with some people here, who compare her with any male singer. At this age to maintain such a kind of voice is not a cake walk. And to continue to take hearts of people comes next. I like her songs, because even when u hear it without any motion picture, u can feel that song, it's that lively.
Few of her melodies are
1. Nenjiniley Nenjiniley from Uyire
2. Raasavay Unna nambi from Mudhal Mariyadhai
3. Chinna Thaayaval from Thalapathi
4. All Yesudas duets
and so on and so forth

According to me Janaki is undoubtedly the most versatile singer of the Indian Cinema. Her versatality is uncomparable. For ex, when she laughs in between the song (depending on the mood of the song), it seems so natural. I have not heard of any other singer including Latha, being so natural even while laughing in between the song. In a similar way, I can give plenty of examples in her Kannada songs showing her versatality. Not only versatile she is, she is as great a singer as Latha. She deserves Dada Phalke award for her contribution to Indian Cinema.

Dear readers,
Without even slightly under-rating the pristine quality of S Janaki's and Asha's voice, I want to prove that Lata was as versatile. If you say this, it simply means that you haven't heard her enough. The foll will prove to you how versatile Lata is:
Her marvellous semi-classical renditions include:
1) Her meera albums 'chala vahi des' and 'meera'
by Hridaynath
2) Her ghazal album 'Kalaam-e-ghalib'
This album brings out the fact that she is as good in the lowermost tones as in the highest.
( Mr Ravi - pay attention)
3) Listen to 'Ae dilruba' by Sajjad Hussain from
'Rustom Sohrab'. This song is BREATH-TAKING in every sense of the term.
4) Listen to 'Jo tum todo piya' from Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, 'Yeh zindagi usiki hai' from Anarkali, 'Yara sili sili' from lekin, 'Kal Nahin Paye Jiya' from Chhotisi Mulakat. This will tell you of her enormous range (above 3 octaves). And do not forget 'vande Matarm'.
5) The startling range in her voice is also brought about by vigourous semiclassical thumris like 'Ek soutan ki lagi najariya', 'balma anari man bhave' by C Ramchandra, 'Ja main tose nahin bolun' from 'soutela bhai'
6) her classical album with Bhimsen Joshi!
She is equally good at frothy songs and even POP!!
Listen to her pop and rock-n-roll songs
from the films 'Mem Didi' (md - salil Chaudhary),
'Prem patra'
and 'Usne Kaha Tha'. Then listen to her cabaret songs from 'Intekam'. And listen to her amazing western classical-based numbers from "prem patra'.
The powerful bass of her voice is easily seen here. she can change the nood of a song by pronouncing it in a different way. No wonder, KL saigal, AR Rahman, MS Subbalaxmi and Michel Jackson (YES him)have publicly praised her! There is a song , I dont recall from which film, composed by Vasant Desai, in which she has sung alternate stanzas in contrasting mood. The songs were picturised on heroine Shama in double role of identical twin sisters, one a vampish girl, and the other a mature lady. Therefore one stanza is a bhajan, the other is a cabaret. Its amazing. And dont forget that she brought tears to the eyes of Pandit Nehru with her 'Ae Mere Vatan ke logon'!
And listen to 'Kuchh dilne kaha' from Anupama if you sill dont believe in the strength of her lower notes.

to vijay,
That's true. This IS a tfm page. So you must praise the worthy singers of tfm like Janaki, sushila, spb etc. But what business do people have saying nasty or silly things about lata or asha here?
In any case, please dont compare S Janaki to Lata.Lata is truly India's nightinagle

Ajay,
Our south people do not like Lata
In every sence north is different from south
The expressions and the way of singing also
differs.
So it is worthless to compare Lata and Janaki

Dear ajith,
is it true that south indians dislike Lata?
I think not, Janaki and Susheela are the most diehard Lata fans you could ever find. So is SPB,
IR. Maybe everybody except for a jealous Vani J.

S.Janki is really a versatile singer .
No doubt about the same. But she cannot be claimed
as the best just like Ps and Lata though the y
are not so versatile like her.
She shamelessly sings every song which is even
rejected by youngsters Eg. (Nethurathiri Amma in
the film Sakalakala vallavan by SP Sailaja).
Her shamelessness paid her rich dividends by getting more songs in the initial periods of Silk smith and other glamour actresses.

guys, even latha is effortless when laughing in a song. Listen to 'ek baat kaho gar maano tum' from Golmaal and 'aap yun faaslon se' from Shankar Hussain and to a certain extent'thandi thandi hawa mein' and 'aaj phir jeene ki'.
