  About VIZHIYE KATHAI EZHUTHU.
  In one of my earlier postings I had mentiuoned that there are some directors/producers who madfe it a point not to release movies till Kannadasan has penned his lyrics. This was a later devcelopment of course. APN, KS Gobalakrishnan, BR Bantulu and Sridar are among those who belong to this category. KS Gobalakrishnan used Panju Arunasalam as well as Kannadasan for the film Saradha. The film became a hit. KSG said that the success was because of his direction while Kannadsan maintained that it awas the songs. In a friendly challenge KSG vowed to come out with a success film without Kannadsan. And true enough, Katpagam was produced as a hit. But what happened? He felt uncomfortable leaving out Kannadasan. So in his next film-Kai Kodutha Deivam-back to Kavinyar Kannadasan.
  
  One more is of course Sridar. In his first super hit film of Kalyana Parisu he used P.Kalyana Sundra, As he died Sridar switched to Kannadasan which was never a regret. Sridar's song scenes had been delayed several times as Kannadasan was ot able to write songs on time. The pallavi Nenjam Marappathillai was written about 20 times before Sridar gave OK. Likewise, as Kannadasan was busy, Sridar booked a room in a Bombay hotel to enable him to write songs with peace of mind for the film Sivantha Mann. Unfortunately Kannadasan could not produce the songs. Yet Sridar was happily patient. Kannadasan came down to Madras and composed wonderful songs for Sivantha Mann. (lets also not forget that it took only less thatn 10 minutes for Kannadassaan to write Muthana muthallavo for the film Nenji Ore Aalayam. This was written hastily on an afternoon while rushing to catch the train for Madurai.)
  
  Such was the relationship that Sridar had with Kannadasan.
  
  Unfortunalety Sridar lost his fortunes when the films failed him miserably. At that time MGR was still the "Vasuool Chakravarthy". Close friends of Sridar pursuaded him to approach MGR to act in his Chitralaya Production. At this time MGR was busy building up the Anna DMK which he founded. Battle lines were clearly being drawn. Kanndasan had some misunderstanding with MGR and therefore he was not writing songs for MGR movies. MGR agreed to act under Chitralaya banner. But then Sridar was not willing to compromise his usual "trade mark" of having Kannadasan's works. Though Vaali was booked for Urimaikkural, Sridar quietly got Kannadsan to write thesong Vizhiye Kathai ezuthu under the name of Vaali. We all know that MGR always made it a point to go through every word in his songs.Likewise all tunes are to be approved by MGR. MGR had been acting from 1936, and his association with Kannadasan goes deep into the distant past. he knew the style and flow of Kannadsan's works. As soon as MGR went throught the lyrics, he had he knew very well that it could not be the work of Vali as he was also familiar with Vali's works. He questioned Sridar who very politely admitted that Kannadasan was the author ot the song. MGR immediately said to this effect " Enakkum Kannadsanukkum karuthu Verupaadu irukkalaam. Aanaal unmayana kavinyanin thiRamaikaLai maraikka koodathu! Padathil avar peyarai payanpaduthungal". By then the record was already out bearing the name of Vali. In the film you could see the name of Kannadsan appearing.
  
  The song "Kan Mai Enthum Vizhiyada" from Poojaikku Vantha Malar is again by Kannadsasn. But Vali's name appears both in the film and the record.

  But i have a question. If sridhar had been so particular about Kannadasan why didnt he use him for 'Azhagae unnai aaradhikkiren' and 'ilamai oonjalaadugiradhu'??Do you know the reason?If so kindly share with us.

  Chinnavalai mugam chivanthavalai is by Kannadasan in Puthiya Boomi. Vali's solladukku song is "paal Thamizh Paal" from Ragasiya Police 115.
  
  Sriram Lakshmanan, I post these from my memory. So you still could cite mistakes sometimes. Anyway I am a regular contributor of articles(cinema, literature and general to Radio Malaysia as well as the local press)So I do extensive reading and get first hand info from the cine artistes themselves.
  
  Ramki: Honestly I do not know the reason. But after the apointment of Kannadasan as Asthana Kavi in 1978 under MGR's rule Kannadasan slowed down writing songs. In about 1979 Kannadasan gave an open statement as follows" Naan nambiya cinema paadal thurai ennai sudukkattukku koNduchendruvittathu" I do not know the meaning. I the same year he became sickly, and the health failed him more in 1980. In 1981 Kannadasan passed away after writing the last song "Kanney Kalaimaney" for Ilayaraja.

  Manisekaran, I used to listen to 'kannadasan neram'(from Malaysian radio). Once they mentioned that Kavignar was not happy with then changing trend of mettukku pattu.It was also mentioned that Ilaiyaraja and Kannadasan were not 'comfortable'with each other. They had an ugly tiff during 'netrikann'. Rendu perum pidividham pidikka KB (since he was close to kannadasan)requested Kannadasan to change the lyrics to suit the tune.

  When Kannadasan neram was in the production, I provided tons of information for the programme, as well as voices of MSV, KVM, Pugazhendhi, Kamalahasan, Nagesh, Gemini Ganesan, Sivakumar, to enrich the programme. I also gave the speech of Karunanithi in praise of Kannadasan. Dont you remember listening to those?
  
  I know Kannadasan and Ilayaraja had clashed. That was after Thiyagam. Kannadasan wrote in Ceinema Express "Kaatiley suLLi poRukkum pasangaL ellaam en paattukku mettu pOda vanthuttanunga" This was reference to Ilayaraja. That is said to be the reason why they did not work closely for some time. That may also be the reason why IR did not allow Kannadasan to write for Azhagey Unnai Aarathikkiren and Ilamai Oonjaladukirathu. Kannadasan is quick tempered, that we know. But fights in cinema cirlce are like cinema fights themselves-temporary.

  you have requested me to unearth treasure. It is just impossible to give them in entirety. But marunthukkaka sila mattum:
  
  1. KVM is known for his depth in Carnatic music, but prefers to avoid modern tunes. Kannadasan need not sit with KVM to compose songs. Kannadasan used to send the songs through someone. KVM used to compose the songs in his absencea, and does not look for Kannadasan to make changes in the songs. One such song is Mannavan Vanthanadee Thozhi- which I have mentioned off and on.
  
  KVM had an excellent assistant-Pugazhendhi, a Keralite by birth. But his family settled in Tamilnadu long ago and became very much Tamilised. He used to insist Kannadasan in giving "poems" and not mere songs for Tamil film, meaning, he demanded for quality. Pugazhendhi had composed several songs for KVM one is "Marainthirunthu Paarkkum Marmamenna" Kannadasan asked Pugazhendhi in what raga he was composing the sonng. Pugazhendhi replied it was "Shanmugapriya" Then Kannadasan composed the song with the word Shanmuga appearing several times.

  @. MSV and Kannadasan had worked for several films before but they became intimate only after Maalayitta Mangai. (Plese see thread on TR Mahalingam) MSV had knowledge of all the music of India. He was agenius in his own way. But his knowledge on Tamil was sorry to say not that deep.
  Secondly, he made it a point to keep Kannadasan around him when composing songs, as he wanted Kannadasan to change words where tune does not flow, or to improve. But the song Ezhu SurangalukkuL ethanai paadal was written with about 25 charanam and passed to MSV through KBalachander. KB chose the best of them and MSV composed the tune. That became an award winner song for Vanee Jayaram.
  
  When Nenjil Ore Alayam was in the production stage, somebody went and poked to Kannadasan that MSV had said something damaging about him. Kannadasan was so sad that he wrote
  "Sonnathu Neethanaa,
  Sol sol sol en uyire"
  
  When MSV saw the greatness and the power of Kannadasan's ability MSV used Kannadasan to experiment his own talents several times. This again is too deep. one or two examples:
  
  a) Ponmagal Vanthaaal from Sorgam was composed using fully wester tunes.
  
  b) Kettukkodee urumi Melam from Pattikkada Pattanama was a combination of east and west.
  
  c) The first Tamil song with most number of musical instruments was Engey Nimmatheee from Puthiya Paravai.
  
  d) The first time MSV ever sang a small piece was when credit was shown in Pasamalar.
  
  f) Kannadasan and MSV took a challenge in the film Mahadevi. Kannadasan wanted to use K. Jamunarani for a sad song which was never typical of her. MSV said it would be flop. Kannadasan said it would be a hit. Jamunaranee said if she failed Kannadasan's expectation she would return her fees twofold. Finally the challenge was taken up. Jamunaranee sang Kamugar Nenjil Neethiyillai ver well and Kannadasan won.
