  THEY BOTH WERE AND ARE BRILLIANT SINGERS.
  RECENTLY,THE FAMOUS,LEGENDARY SINGER OF BENGALI AND HINDI MUSIC OF YESTERYEARS,VISITED SYDNEY,
  
  AUSTRALIA FOR A COUPLE OF SELLOUT CONCERTS.IN A
  FAMILY GATHERING,FOLLOWING THE CONCERTS,SOMEONE
  ASKED HIM, WHO WAS,IN HIS OPINION THE GREATEST
  SINGER OF ALL TIMES,HIS ANSWER WAS MD.RAFI.
  ACCORDING TO MANNA DEY MD.RAFI WAS THE MOST VERSATILE SINGER.HE COULD SING LIGHT CLASSICAL
  SONGS WITH EASE,WAS VERY COMFORTABLE WITH LIGHT POP AND EQUALLY AT HOME IN SINGING A TYPICAL ROMANTIC SONG.HIS QWALIS,GAZALS,GEETS ARE STILL VERY POPULAR AMONGST MUSIC LOVERS ALL OVER THE WORLD.

  well this is not at all the dabatable topic at all . nobody can ever match the quality of rafi sahab's voice. he was simply greattttttt. well no one has ever & nobody can in future be campared with rafi sahab . he is matchless. well prachi is correct even i also don't know this SPB!!!!!!

  my dear raghu , i came to know that spb is sp balasubramaniam . okkk i didn't know the short form . but plz. do face the reality that as far as spb is concerned he is though greatt but if u compare him to late rafi sahaab he is not even comparable. this truth is as clear as a crystal

  well spb is heard mostly by south indians but late rafi sahaab reach to every corner of india . & plz.... do not dare to compare rafi sahaab with today's third grade singers. they r just surviving due to absence of greats. i would rank even kishore kumar better than spb. rafi sahaab is on top of world of indian playback singing.........

  Every one has their own favourites. I have heard both rafi and SPB extensively. Being a south indian and having hindi as my first lanuage helps.
  
  Here is my take:
  
  1. Rafi no doubt is one of the greatest ever , but if any one who has done serious research ( i have, so i can tell) will tell u that singers voice will reach a peak and then gradually taper off. Case in point, listen to songs sung by rafi in the 80's . he was a shawdow of himself. In some of the duets with kishore( whose voice had reached the "golden peak" by then) he sounds bad and u wonder ...
  
  2. Kishore also got past his peak and then we have "wannabe kishores and rafis". Singers like kumar sanu/abhijit others owe their bread and butter to these great singers..
  
  3. Now for SPB, I will not debate ignorants who have not listened to him at all. Consider this:
  1.SPB sings in 4 different languages i know of( i speak all 4 of them fluently) and till date i have not found any error in diction of all the languages. About the south indian accent on hindi words, that is understandable, becuase hindi is supposed to be spoken the "delhi/UP/MP " way or its not hindi at all!!
  
  His voice and range is the sweetest which rivals with Rafi only( even kishore dosent cut in here).
  
  It is a disgrace to serious listeners to debate on who is better and worse still, to declare who is the best.
  
  People, its all about perceptions and pls. dont put down any singer and yes udit narayan is one of the very few original artists in the industry

  Who the hell is SPB ???? Never heard his song in one Indian movie.... No, Mohammed Rafi is still the best playback singer of the world... O duniya ke rakwhale, suno suno ay duniya walo bhapu ki je amar kahani, etc.... to much to write... Over 40 years only one playback singer has dominated indian movies: THE MELODY KING OF INDIA PADMA SHRI MOHAMMED RAFI..

  Mohd. Rafi left us over 23 years ago and still he is lonely at the top of music with his golden voice. There are many singers trying to imitate him ... with no success... No, the KING of the kings can't be imitated and he 'll not be replaced from his thrown.
