S.P. BALASUBRAMANIAM
HARIHARAN
KAMAL HAASAN
SHAH RUKH KHAN
These are the male playback singers listed in the hey ram website.. how complete is the site? :-). I am sure the singer is none of the above.. (I am on my third run with this song now. :-).

iam listening right now in suresh's site. The singer is ajay chakraborthy. The album does not sound like a typical TFM album, perhaps because of the fact the music was composed to cater to a wider audience.
The problem out of the 6 songs half of them are not exactly full songs. one is just a sloka recital while the other 2 are half songs. out of the three other full songs, ram ram by kamal impressed u a bit in the first hearing itself.
kamal has sung in a deep-pitched voice. The first line is set in the same tone as that of the holy chants from a mosque. this is the title song and has a quite a patriotic feel about it. as someone said perhaps it is like 'manidha manidha' but maybe not in the same class. sruthi has also made her debut.
isaiyil thidanguthamma if iam right is set in hmsanaadham. it reminded me of 'om namo namaha' in certain places but otherwise is a fresh tune.
the folk tune by mahalakshmi and the dappanguthu type song by kamal, SPB are pretty ordianry.
The Asha number is also not that great, but nevertheless melodious.
Overall, on first hearing 2 good numbers with the rest just passing muster. Of course my opinions are bound to change after a few more listenings.

yo!
Actually I had subzero expectations for HeyRam.
c'mon guys let's give it to raja.
Brilliant score. I have been waiting for 5 years for something like this. I think even IR has been waiting for 5 years for a movie like this!!
Raja no complaints u have dunit
Why can't u do this for the other movies as well??
3 cheers

Brilliant Score!
Hey Ram grows on you. Since it's not a 'musical', all the songs seem to be situation-dependent.
I just loved the Western Classical piece that appears right afterthe Marathi Lavani song! Superior Score!
The Ajoy Chakraborty song is great! It's been set in Hamsa Nadam,a raga new to Hindustani music. As most of you may be aware, Ajoy is one of the most respected Hindustani vocalists.
In the Hindi version of the Sanyasa Mantra piece, the credit reads, Kamal Haasan and Anonymous!! What's the secret behind this? Hema malini, are you listening?

Vijay,
Asha -hariharan number is the song of the album , IMO :-) Easily the best song of Raja in recent times.......I'm told this tune is raNi mukherjee's theme and the website says it'll grow on u and indeed it does....
The dappAnguthu song is by kamal and one jolly mukherjee (the cover says so )
Isayil thodangudhamma is indeed set in hamsanaadham
Did u notice the way the mahalakshmi song seamlessly changing serious from a very joyous mood ???

Neels,
r the songs in Hindi and Tamil versions same ????

S,
I have the Hindi album with me. Have yet to listen to the Tamil version.
I guess Vaishnava Janato is the same in both languages, 'cos it does have Thiruppavai and some other Aazhvar Paasuram right after the brief "vaishnava Janato' rendered in Carnatic Style, followed by a Nadaswaram piece.
IMO, three songs stand out (the rest being brief numbers), the one by Ajoy Chakraborty, the first Ram Ram song by Kamal & shruti and the duet by Asha and Hariharan.
I must say that the fast 'party number' by Kamal and Jolly Mukherjee was a disappointment. Hopefully, it 'sounds' great on screen, blending with the picturization!!!!
By the way, I have made an error in my previous posting. The 'Lyrics' for the Sanyas Mantra track has been (obviously) attributed to 'Anonymous', not to the singer. Sorry!

I don't know if I am the only one, but the fast paced jolly and kamal song sounds very catchy IMO!!
But the only disappointment is that when I played this number alound in my office, many colleagues asked if the MD was ARR !!!!! :-(((((

Kumar,
Mostly ARR makes his score, in such a way that it can be very well used in hindi and also in tamil. So the bottemline is , making a song in hindi tinge, makes the song different and makes us feel that its in ARR type. Its all because of that guy, what to do

Oh my God!!!!!!!!
What a album. I was just listning to Kannukul Nilavu. But when I hear HEY RAM, I was just amazing. IR he is the best music director India has. All the songs are diferrents. Whole the music in every song are new. Thanks to IR, he has prooved that he is the best and that he can still!!!!!!!!!!!

shankar,
I just heard to Isaiyal thodangudama, its not hamsanadham, since hamsanadham, doesn't have "Da", and this song does. I can't get the actual raga name, but I know jesudas has sung another song in that same raga in some kacheri

Listened to those six songs of Hey Ram. It is a BIG disappointment as it turned out to be mediocre(:- None of the songs are sublime to haunt the mind(s) of listener. IR should n't have offered to compose the songs for HR, he could have just done the film's BGM. IMO, few songs (esp. chitra's,UK/Anu) of Kannukku Nilavu are far better than any song of Hey Ram.

One should not forget the stage when IR entered to score the music. I really wonder anyone else would have opted for scoring at this stage.

Folks,
just listened to Isailyil and Nee partha.. It's great .. But obviously songs seem to be very much sitaution dependent and very short also.

I rank asha and HH song as no. 1. This song goes deep and touches your life. If only this song is picturised to the mood of the music, this would be the song lingering in our mind for long

I am listening to hey Ram in Suresh's site.Great work by both Suresh and Maestro. Thanks a lot for both.IMHO all the songs are so different and I haven't seen any other movie having such a combination of songs. I feel the BGM should also be good as usual.Someone earlier posted that the BGM would also be included with the songs. So is it included. If not will it be released as a seperate CD.Can someone tell me this.

the songs of heyram, as i expected sound very different. one can sense that they are all situation drivern- cant expect anything else when they are composed after the movie. but to term them "mediocre" is a bit of over-reacting. They are very differentand will take a few hearings to get used to. But for sure they'll gel great with the movie.

When I listened to the first song, "hey ram" by Kamalhassan, it struck me instantly. I could sense a feel of fresh new air in the album.
I just can't accept the statement "the album is not upto expectations". I'm forced to ask what the expectations were precisely. When the album of Devar Magan was released, it came along with "Pandiyan". I can still remember people calling Devar magan mediocre and Pandiyan better. But time answers, Devar Magan is still a classic. The songs are scored with movie in mind and this movie is not taken with songs in mind. So forget that IR has scored the music and listen. U can feel the sense of fresh air. No irritating synth, more natural instruments........more like this. Atleast look for the piano movements in the Asha duet. KN and HR are my definite buys :-).

hey neruppu (why cann't you post with your real name?, you are so afraid to reveal identity)
Songs of Hey Ram are really mediocre by any standards. Why do you have to listen to the songs a 100 times to make it really grow on you? (vithai pottu , thaNNi ooththi vaLarkanumA?) If they don't appeal to me, they just failed. The only listenable stuff in the album is some WC pieces at the end of maratha geeth. It is a big blow for kamal, he deserves it for his pompous attitude in dealing with LS.
