Udhaya,
Didn't you find KJY's rendering of Poonthendrale jarring, almost Hariharan-ish? esp, in the beginning lines, & esp. the way he sings the word "poonthendrale"? I'm just curious if anyone else had a similar feeling.

Suresh,
No, I really liked everything about "Poonthendralae". It was a fun upbeat romantic song not the somber, deep KJY we find in his classics, but I really dug it. KJY is Hariharanish? Ouch, nenju porukkuthillayae!

I have not listened to the Tamil version, but I did listen to 'Oh Bhavre' in Hindi by KJY and Asha. It was very well rendered (esp. by KJY) and I guess it's the only song from the film that stood out!
Shanmugam Murugappan,
This is regarding your query about the Hindi film albums by ARR in 98:
ARR had an ok year in HFM. His Dil Se score was great and got rave reviews. The failure of the movie hopefully should not affect his chances of winning popular awards there, like Filmfare, Screen and other sundry awards.
Doli Sajaake Rakhna had a couple of good songs and this movie too faired miserably at the box office.
Apart from the above two, ARR's other albums were 'Vishwa Vidhaata' (a bad remake of Pudhiya Mukham, the film flopped so badly that ARR's great score never reached the masses; And I rate his score for this film to be one of his best ever)
Kabhie Na Kabhie (One of Priyadarshan's worst efforts, the film sank without any trace. It had some good numbers by Hariharan)

Vishwa Vidhaata and Kabhi Na Kabhi are HFM scores from 1997! Also, Ottam is a TFM score from 1997!
The only HFM by ARR in 1998 was Jeans, Dil Se.., and Doli Sajake Rakhna. And the only TFM by ARR was Jeans and Uyirae.
I hope that there are more than 3 releases in 1999!

We will hear a lot of ARR next year(hopefully:))
kaadhalar dhinam
en swaasa kaatrae
engineer
Padaiappa
sangamam
udhaya
Taj Mahal
Most of these films have been in production for a long time and they will definitely face light in 1999.
According to recent issue of Filmfare ARR has a done a great job in Subhash Ghais 'Taal'. But this
could be heard only in 2000.

All the songs have been finished for TAAL. The recordings have been finished.
guess what Subash Ghai is really happy with the outcome.
the film is only 50% complete

if all songs r complete and film is 50% complete
isn't 2000 a long wait for just the album ?

Ramki,
According to me, only the following albums are sure to be released.
padaiyappa
sangamam
rhythm
The others, according to so many rumours, have so many problems regarding the distribution rights, audio cassette and CD sales rights, etc. I heard that "Taj Mahal" project is dropped temporarily, not sure though.

Kabhie Na Kabhie definitely belongs to 1998. In fact it figures in the list of films released in 1998 for the 98 Filmfare Awards.

The film was released in 1998 maybe, but the soundtrack was released in July 1997 for Kabhi Na Kabhi. I go by the soundtrack release dates. Sorry for any misunderstandings.

Thanks.

Cool it UV. Let them wish him and continue with the thread. One can't obviously start a thread called 'Happy Birthday ARR'. There won't be anything to discuss there (except of course the possible years like 1966, 65 or 67)
OK! Let me break it :)
Is ARR still interested in scoring music for low budget fliks? He has been very choosy about the banners, the directors, the music companies etc. And boy, he's been successfully marketed in most of the cases. Earlier He had given some excellent music for low-budget films like Pavithra. But his aloofness showed up in Pudiya Mannargal and Andhi Mandaarai.
Will the newcomers (not backed by Meesaikkara Annachi s)be able to approach him, now that he has become BIG?

Theekkul Viralai Vaithaai
Stars: Prabhu Deva
Director: Rajiv Menon
Ad film-maker and award-winning cinematographer Rajiv Menon seemed to be in hibernation after his Arvind Swamy-Prabhu Deva-Kajol starrer Minsara Kanavu. Now he's back, and yes, so is Prabhu Deva, who will star in Menon's next directorial outing, Theekkul Viralai Vaithal. Alongside Deva is -- in all likelihood -- Ajith.

``I am busy writing the script. The cast has not been finalised. Of course, the music score will be by Rahman. It will be a serious film,'' Rajiv says.
