I have been listening to two albums, kaliyoonjal and yAthramozhi last two days.
One word review? Hypnotizing!
The recording of songs, the blend of snazzy, rythmic music with the symphonic.......Gadzooks!
yAthrAmozhi:
1. pon vElilE by Chitra/MGS?: One of chitra's best in recent years!! The quantum of romanticism that Raaja fuses into this song, right from "1 2 3 4" is unbelievable. The bit that leads to the pallavi should haunt you till you lose yourself into oblivion! The Raaja puts you in trance there and the next few minutes you are not you!!
I have not seen a romantic song of this kind in tfm in recent years! No! The first interlude is a symphonious meandering of violin. I should make a mention of the chorus backing. Shouldnt I call the Maestro "the king of ensemble"? His chorus management is just inexplicable!
Just when the charanam is about to end, listen to the violin making a carefree juddering at the back! Its all gone in a few seconds!! Oh No!!
Look, i donno the way to explain the kind of feeling i experience when listening to this song. Thats all. Or have I explained it all?
Warning: This song is for those who can live a state of mind in which consciousness is fragile.
I'll be back.......

Dear Nithin,
Pallavi Anu pallavi was dubbed in tamil as mentioned by pg, this was actaully the fiest movie of Mani Rathnam, and was the first movie of Anil Kapoor also if I am not wrong, with superb photography by my all time favorite Balu Mahendra, all the songs are just terrific, especially "Naguva Nayana" one of the few songs I must have listened to infenite no. of times. The BGM in this movie is a feast to every one, a must for all IR fans (please see immediately if some one has not seen this movie). In fact the oh Premie song was an inspiration for "Manram vanda tenralukkU" of Mouna Ragam especially the pallavi. The theme BGM was later used by IR for a song in "vaazhkai" "mell mella nadu ennai".
Does any body know about Mani's 2nd movie in his career before he made his first Tamil "pagal Nilavu", the title was "Unaru" I am sure this was by IR also. I was told this movie had a great BGM also.
My brother was mentioning In "hoo male " one of the new IR's Kannada movie 3 songs are terrific with his 80's flavour (The golden Era of TFM), the title song apparently is sung by Dr. Raj.

pallavi anupallavi was dubbed as priya O priya in tamil. As pinchiS says, the BGM in the movie is fabulous. athukkaagavE antha padaththai paarkkalaam, kannai moodikkOdnu. :-).

Ravi kannai thirandhaalum onnum theriyaadhu:))Padam fulla iruttu:)))))
Btw IRs first Kannada film was 'kokila'(*ing Kamal,Shobha,Rojaramani-dir BaluMahendra).I can say that KFM had never had such beautiful songs ever before or after.

I have a feeling that the ratio of good to bad songs of IR in other languages is much higher than in tamizh. any opinions? I mean from people who think that IR has actually scored some bad numbers. :-).

Dear Ramki,
Kokila was not Ir's first kannada movie, "maatu Tappada Maga " is the first movie of Ir, in which our Super star had acted as a very very small time villain with Ananth nag (Bro. of Shankar Nag ) had acted as hero. Kokila's music was scored by Saleel Chowdury, if I am not wrong, (A great music director , who did few south Indian movies, including Azhiyaada kolangal of Balu Mahendra)." Incidentally IR was associated with GKV under whom Ir was working as assistant for some years , in fact IR's name appears as assistant for GKV (as David Raja) in one of the super hits of Dr. Raj "Bangarada Manushya" which had some melodies like Ir numbers. IR had used one of the songs from this movie in "aduthathu Albert", Does any one know if PB srinivas has sung any other song apart from the melody"Tenrale nee pesu ........un mounam" my wordings may not be right, please let me know which movie does this song from.
If some body can help me we can start a topic on IR in NON TFM (Kannada, Telugu I have lots to share with some Malayalam and Hindi) and I am sure this thread will be a delight to many IR fans, as lot of Non TFM songs of IR are not known to many Ir fans inculding me, enna solreenga, Gopal, Ravi, Madan, Gokulna, BS, Bones (Nanum ungalai Bones Machaan innu koopidalama, enakku younger sisters yaarum illai sorry ) Pg, MPR,MSK, Nithin,( NOV and Satya Keerthi neengal innum enga katchiyil irukkeerargal aanal, I am just joking, ARR also has a decent contribution in Telugu and Hindi none in Kannada, No kannada producers can afford his salary though I personally like Hamsalekha much better than ARR, he doesn't lift lot of western stuff like ARR except for occassional IR styles)

Dear Ramki,
About Pallavi anu pallavi ' photography, Balu is just terrific, and Mani as beginner did n't dominate much so anda Iruttu samacharathukku anda padathule avvalavu vaaypu illai, in fact Mani's obsession with darkness started with sriram who used to be much better in his initial movies with Moulie like "Vaa inda pakkam" and others, with media's hype and " Nayagan" s n. award aduthaduthu sri ram rombavum artificilla ayittaru.

Ravi.,
I guess u r right! may be the reason for good/bad ratio being high in Non-TFM is b'cos IR scores one
non-tfm score per 10 -15 in TFM.
but even then, if u listen to yathramozhi, Kaliyoonjal and siraichalaai it gives me a feeling that IR is somehow biased towards mallu films. It may be due to the less-commercialisation in MFM compared to TFM. May be not !!!

Pinchii srinivasan im very sure That IR was the MD for 'Kokila'in fact he even won the state award for the film(was it in 1979?).When BM remade the film in hindi with Revathy ,Heera and Ramesh Aravind IR was the MD again. When BM requested him to use the same tune as the kannada original,IR refused saying 'whatever i do i cannot bring that magic again'. Instead of using tunes from kokila
he used tunes from other tamil ventures like Jhonny, marupadiyum etc.
Btw u can discuss abt ventures of IR in other languages under the thread'TFM artistes in other languages'

Dear Ramki,
I am sure that Kokila was by Salil Chowdury, in fact it has a song which was earlier scored in one of the hindi movies by him. I hope some body would clarify this .
thanks

IR won two of his three National Awards for non TFM. That should say a lot. But IMO, many of IR's great TF scores (songs and BGM) have gone unrecognized by the mass public.
Yesterday I was watching AvArampoo - great BGM. The movie is a slow-moving-but-interesting love story with great opportunity for IR. Lots of scene with little dialogue only IR's BGM. The scenes just bfor and after the hero and heroine make love especially are wonderful.
BTW has the heroine (Nandhini-sister of Aruna) acted in other movies ? Was this movie her debut ?
The songs however are only OK by IR's standards.

Ramki
Is it not "Aur yEk pRem kahAni". I eagerly bought this cassette only to listen to all those reorchestrated tunes of Raaja. uh, what a disappointment. Even now, i have a fear of buying hindi, tel, kan versions of Raaja songs!!
I agree somehow with MSK, that Raaja is scoring great songs for Mal. Yes, his good/bad ratio is high in the non-tfm section, at least in the recent years.
You just cannot avoid this observation, when you listen to NMH, Ymozhi, kaliyoonjal, etc., and of course, kAlApAni!!
One step ahead, someone (Pinchi?)was discussing the quality of songs in the thamizh version of "geethAnjali" - I mean "idhayaththai thirudAdhE". the "effect" that was produced by geethAnjali was not to be seen in I thirudAdhE, thankz to Mano??
Likewise, I think KangaLin vArthaigaL is a shadow of NMH, i believe. Well, i dont know. Is reproducing the songs in another language, at a later date, difficult? May be the 'drive' may not be there!!

gOpAl: I felt that the Hindi version of 'kaarril enthan geetham' was recorded much better than the original.. atleast the various instruments were more 'visible'. The fall in quality could be due to the reduced budgets of movies that are dubbed.. people probably cut corners in recording expenses. ButIMO ManO was the chief reason for the IT songs sounding poorer than Geethaanjali.
