Today i saw Ninaithale Inikkum.. Songs were pleasing. But the BGM big ZERO from MSV. One romantic scene between Kamal and Jayapradha. What does our MSV do? He hums in the background with his terrible voice. His choice of music is awful.
IR would have had field day with these kind of scene.
Vegam Vegam pogum pogum magic... IR was truly a magical pheonmenon

Ragavan's post and Kupps post are such a welcome relief from this sea of madness. I guess I too get pissed off enough to go for this tit-for-tat business.
Thanks Kupps for understanding what I said.
We have a large movie industry besides Tamil and Hindi and to come to a conclusion without doing a proper sampling, is wrong in my opinion.

Speaker i agree with you. MGR was there to give a lift to MSV. He also had KKD with him. With KKD and KGR around, primary importance was obviously for songs not for BGM. Infact if i memory serves right MGR handpicked SPB to sing the song 'Ayiram Nilave Vaa'. MGR controlled the masses also the artists. BGM was an unknown concept. Bernard herman, Philip class, Ennio morricone all known for their wonderful original scores. The theme music of psycho, vertigo, beverely hills cop had wonderful impact on the outcome of the movie. Something our earlier MDs didn't realize until IR came broke through conventional film music. There are millions of followers for Illayaraja's BGM all over the world. Nooravathu Naal became a landmark movie for Manivannan thanks to IR. Till now Maniratnam's best movie stands as Mouna Raagam. IR is one big reason for that. Bharathi Raja's best movie till date is 'Muthal Mariyathai'. IR is one big reason for that. Balachander's one of the best movie if not the best is "Sindhu Bairavi". IR is one big reason for that. Fazil's all movies were scored by IR.
First thing that comes to our mind when someone says 'Mullum Malarum' one of the best from Rajini is "Senthazampoovil" song. His mass appeal unquestionable. Everybody have their own detractors. I find 4 or 5 here. It hardly affects his reputation. Godfather is considered to be the best movie of all time by people. Even for that movie some guys given 0 out of 10. I guess some guys who don't want to give recognition to IR's achievements will fall under that category. He will be viewed as the symbol of music. Illaayraja and Music inseperable. IR is god.

Kupps
Point taken.I should have avoided those lines. You are right, just because i like both i need not have looked for the similarities.Sorry.
The importance of BGM being one of the 1000s of factors which maketh a movie was not felt with stalwarts around. So MSV might have stayed away from those experiments by his choice or as someone puts it MGRs "diktats".So why bring the man s name in this discussion.the thread starter has no noble intentions ...I do not know how by saying MSV was terrible makes IR good.
So ihad to start the thread asking for specif acheivements of IR .and i got ..you know what!No specific answers, konjam ketta varthai,etc..
I am reiterating that my idea is not to add fuel. But why drag MSV s name when you want to say IR s BGM is good?

jest for fun... imagine MSV doing a "Baasha" kinda chorus when MGR is walking with his troupe....!!!
Those days, MDs were there to give good songs. BGM wasnt an area which was carefully looked at. And when cinema became more and more money-spinning and attractive (and many other attributes), ppl started noticing everything... they became more knowledgeable and each and every department (BG,Art,Camera, Editing etc etc) slowly became a noted area.
You cant criticize a Babu or Kesavan or a Ellis Duncan for not doing what a PCSreeram or KVAnand and the like are doing... Just 'coz a PCSreeram does a soft-focus lighting in AgniNatchathiram and got accolades, u cant call him greater than a Ellis Duncan... You get along with the innovations and should appreciate the older generation for having achieved so much inspite of n number of limitations.
The same goes for MSV Vs IR Vs ARR vs x y z... their times are different... the tastes were different... the stuff offered to them were different... but they all mean just one thing... SUCCESS... A man of 4 feet height jumps to 8 feet and gets applauded... a man of 5 feet height jumps 10 feet and gets applauded... a man of 7 feet height jumps 14 feet and get applauded... do u find any point in making fun of the man of 4 feet for just covering 8 feet? And will u call the man of 7 feet, the greatest of them all just 'coz he jumped 14 feet?
The bottomline is.... BEST is a matter of personal opinion... there is no point in comparing each and every individual and indulge in mud-slinging on the other. Hope i've got thru what i got in my mind.:-)

C~P it is not repeating... for each situation a composer creates a music. When that situation repeats music repeats. He creates BGMs based on moods and situations. For each combo of moods and situation composer will introduce the BGM..
Have you seen 12B? Mission? Untouchables? Beautiful Mind?
I assume you have seen 12B i will explain. 12B shows two lives of hero. Harris Jayaraj has cleverly allocated one music for each mood, situation, character. Sham-Simran has a seperate piece.. Sham-Jothika has two pieces.. because characters in both lives meet Jothika..
When Mechanic sham-jothika meet he has a seperate piece. When bank office sham-jothika meet he has a seperate piece(Oru parvaidhan song music). When both meet together jothika he uses the music that was used before the hero misses the bus. The BGM was very essential for these kind of fantasy based movies. HJ did a great job in that. If you have not noticed this rent 12B DVD not VHS and watch.
It is not enough if you just follow the rules. It has to fit the occasion, period, mood, character and everything more importantly it has to be worth listening. BGM is really an art. You need to listen to music with open mind. Ok i accept MSV is not a terrible BGM scorer. But he is just an average BGM scorer. I already told you enough good points about MSV. But you still need my acceptance for you to say IR is a good BGM scorer.
Just like Ashok Kumar made every one realize 'oh there is something called camera' in movie, IR made every one realize about BGM.

Awe,
ya....i get wat ur saying....wat i was saying was MSV mayb didnt do such things as creating a specific piece for a specific situation...dats wat i was wondering (im not VERY well versed with old movies dats y!....only coz i watch niraya comedy movies i was able to give u Kaasethaan Kadavuladaa.....i still feel it has excellent BGM)
however i have gathered from my father dat he did use such pieces in films like Anbe Vaa.....Paavaa Mannippu....Paalum Pazhamum etc etc......but i wudn be able to comment on the quality of those coz i dunno wat they are! :)
>>But you still need my acceptance for you to say IR is a good BGM scorer. <<
