Just watched Julee Ganapathy...thought i should share my views abt the movie
There are two ways to make a suspense thriller work...
a) building clever twists & turns
b) Make it gruesome & bloody, and expect the audience to be awed by some bloody violent scenes...[cheap thrills you know]
Julee Ganapathy is sadly the latter...some really raw violence towards the end (and thats the reason probably they gave it a A certificate)...The "very positive" sify review posted above would definetly make you wonder if you watched the same movie as the reviewer there watched...
Balu mahendra must have had two things limiting his scope in making it this JG true suspense thriller...The psycopathic fan is a "female", Saritha which limits the scope for stunt/action sequences) and the writer (Jairam) lands up at Saritha's place thanks to a car accident, and is physically immobile...Thus you have endless indoor scenes, and in fact the audience clapped loudly when narration moves outdoor (for just a few handful of scenes). That makes the movie more like our TV serial kind..
IR makes a huge difference to the impact of this otherwise pretty ordinary fare...IR's BGM is outstanding & impeccable as always...if you watch the movie, check out the BGM in the following scene..
Jairam exploring saritha's house after she leaves...man, a full 15 minutes of unbeliveable BGM...(IR has infact "talks" with his music, narrating whats seen on the screen...the scene comes in the second half...the guy sitting next to me was telling this to his friend," Appaa... music mirattudhu paa !!..")
Can watch this movie just for IR's superb BGM score & of course the songs..

Vel - so this one is also on the lines of "mudu Pani"aaa - where Shobba will be kidnapped by Prathap Pothen and kept as a hostage in his house ?

Sabesan, JG is technically (art/lighting etc vintage Balu Mahendra stuff) & narration quality-wise far superior to "moodu pani"...But the film needed more steam...As i said in earlier post, it will just be the right stuff for a TV serial..not for a 3 hour movie. Definetly not.
IR is the saving grace in Julee Ganapathy (JG)....It was pure pleasure watching/listening IR create his usual musical magic with his htoughtful & stunning BGM...He is reaching greater heights & setting very high standards in BGM with every passing film...The BGM in "JG" leads ahead of what i heard in even "Ramana" going by the impact it generates...Watching the movie, i was just thinking,"We are damn lucky to have a massive talent like IR amongst us.."
Especially, watch out for the rocking BGM in the scene i mentioned in the post above. IR rivets you to the movie !!

JG sounds like a tamizh-copy of the Kathy Bates/James Caan thriller (based on Stephen King's novel) "Misery"? Is that indeed the case?
BM has not done a single "original" film since Veedu!
How easy to build (scene by scene) on somebody else's successful imagination!
Rettaivaal Kuruvi (Micky and Maude)
Marubadiyum (Arth)
Moodupani (Psycho)
Azhiyadha Kolangal (Summer of 42)
....and so on.
Such recycled filmography!

JG is actually remake of 'Misery'. But Moodupani is not 'Psycho' remake. They are of different storyline, even though the character seems to have similar psychoprofiles.

CM-
Thank you for the "Misery" confirmation.
I remember an interview with BM where he admitted that Moodupani was a "homage" to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. He also said that the "love" angle had to be introduced in the film, as violence and sex were two things had the censor board using its scissors overtime. Hence, while the "storyline" may have been indianised, the "plot and narrative" were indebted to Psycho.
In the same interview he acknowledged the "inspiration" he got on seeing Midnight Express, which soon turned out to be "Yathra" in Malayalam and "Nireekshana" in Telegu. (These can be added to the above list :-))

Naaz,
JG is quite an ordinary movie, except for three things,
a) IR's massive BGM compositions, spanning 10-15 minutes too sometimes...outstanding !! How i really wish someone comes up with CD tracks of IR's recent BGMs atleast...
b) BM's class lighting/camera work, which goes without saying..and i like the way he prefers to keep characters always in the left/right ends of the screen unlike most people who keep actors in the center of the screen (i am talking abt the song picturizations). This is one regular technique while will help u identify a "BM-made-song" from others...and of course the "fake talk" the artists do for duet songs, instead of lip-synchs...
c) The make-up work for Jairam...the wounds on his face/body looked goddamn real :-)
Other than these, you could say Saritha did good justice to her role, almost performing the role of neurotic psycopath to clinical perfection. Jairam was not bad either with his performance.
Just the script simply was not interesting enough...I for one expected a lot from a BM movie...and one which has come after 4-5 years.

Thank you for the recommendation. If JG shows up in the cinemas here, I'll make a point to check it out. I hope (and pray) that Saritha does not go overboard with her ticks and twitches like she did in Agni Saatchi. She is a fine artiste, but only a strict director can keep her from succumbing to melodramatic urges.
BM the Cinematographer is (almost) always the unmaking of BM the Director. This is my long held belief, and I can say that your second para only confirms this. And BM the Director always takes the easy option of remakes, adaptations and translations.
Do you think the film (JG) would have been more effective in tone and execution if there were no songs? If the BGM by IR is indeed a "character" in the proceedings (you more or less say this above) wouldn't the impact of the plot be more visceral without the distraction of songs and such?
It is heartening to note that viewers these are attentive (and appreciative) of factors like BGM, Make-up, and Scene-Composition...This can only bode well for the younger generation of creators.
Maybe the day when we can see a film and not miss the formula (song, dance, comedy track/subplot) is not so far away. Wouldn't that be a welcome radical shift and a much-needed "growing up" ?

good to see a different tamil film than the usual love-formula movies..... the standard of tamil movies has come to the rock bottom with the age of lovers coming from 25 to 20 to 15 to 10....
the story is the same.... really bored with tamil movies nowadays....
balu mahendra is trying to be different - let us hope this movie motivates other directors to take some movies...

baba earned more than Ramana, Villan and Bhagavathy all together.
Ramana is a failure. The Hindu said in one article that it was just able to break even.
You, me and many will remember Baba for ages...Will talk about that..Good or bad....
But 6 months from now, even when they Show ramana for free in TV many would not prioratise it to see.
