Madhan,
From what one could collect about the story, it takes off as a flashback, starting as memories of a 90 yr-old sakethram. That might explain the first song. Have you seen the official website :http://www.heyramthemovie.com

One of my friend's parent was in the censor board for Hey Ram. In one word she said "the movie is great; great effort". The movie is planned for Feb'19th.

Song by Hariharan and Ashabhosle... Stands out !
In the other songs,.. one can notice styles.. that IR usually doesn't venture into.. like Hindi film songs for marriage situations ! .. but that might be due to the constraint of having to stick with pre-shot song sequences.

Hi,
Could somebody here tell me who wrote the lyrics for the song "Saranama Bhava" in Sethu?

I agree with Madhan on the disppointing use of Synths in two songs (especially the party song..., glimpses of which I have seen, with Kaml dancing with Shah Rukh and Saurabh Shukla, of Satya fame). I wish IR had come up with something more classy, yet peppy!!!
This apart, IR I think has done a fab ob. I'm sure he's excelled in the BG score as well. What we need to keep in mind while criticizing the album is the fact that LSubs had already composed the songs and Kamal had picturized and edited them as well. This monumental task of having to compose something brand new, yet, matching the shots on screen is commendable.
I wonder what happened to DK Pattammal's rebndition of Vaishnava Janato. From what I saw, the Vibha Sharma version is performed by Vasundhara Das on screen!

Neels,
So, that justifies vibha sharma's rendition of the song, right ??? Can u imagine D K P singing for vasunthara das ??? :-)) ..................(on second thoughts, yes....considering vasunthara's voice in shakalaka baby !!!! :-) )

S!
I was only asking whether or not DKB's version will be in the film, now that Vasundhara has performed it on screen. It would be great, even if it comes in the BGM, or being sung by the 80 year Mami from Calcutta.
And I liked your comment on Vasundhara's voice;)
Raniyoda original voice, idukkum oru padi Mela theriyuma? She speaks in 'Onnaraikkattai'!! Huskyna Husky Avvalavu Husky!!!
Guess kamal likes 'his' women this way!

Finally I managed to get through the official site. It has lots of interesting nuggets of information under "Behind The Scenes":
Sample this:
"
Kamal Haasan's favorite - Illayaraja has done the music for Hey ! Ram.
88 Year old D.K.Pattamal, the singing sensation of Indian classical music years ago, has sung "VAISHNAWA JANATO" for the film. Frail in health she was rolled in a wheelchair into the recording room for her rendition. Her love for Kamalji she says was the only reason why went to all this trouble.
Kamal Haasan also wanted M.S. Subbalakshmi to sing a song for the film, but since she has retired from her singing career, she declined. Nevertheless on Kamal Haasan's insistance she has allowed him to use any of her old songs in the movie. Strangely more than 50 years ago she has sung a Hindi and a Tamil version of a song which was a hit all over India. It was for a film called "MEERA". The song was "BRINDAVANU MEIN NANDAN LEELA" (hindi) and "BRINDAVANTHIL KANNAN VALARNDA" (tamil). It perfectly suits the bi-lingual Hey ! Ram.
The final song HEY ! RAM has many voices including Kamal Haasan's and Rani Mukherjee's. It is the modern version of "RAGHUPATI RAGHAVA RAJA RAM" with pulsating modern rythym.
A Lavani song in this film is composed in unusual raag Adaana. The Director wanted the song to slowly transform into a Wagnerian like symphony evoking facist memories.
The song by Kamal Haasan, Shah Rukh and S.P Balasubramaniam has raunchy rythym and lyrics which takes a funny dig at fundamentalism, without malice. Lyrics in Tamil are by Vaali and Hindi by Sameer.
The Duet by Hariharan and Kavitha Krishnamurthy is also the theme music. Like the Lara's theme, this is Aparna's theme. Once played on the piano with Jibonanda Das's poem, it transforms into a Duet. A melody equally haunting to the protagonist Saket Ram and any listner. The Tamil lyrics for this song was written by Kamal Haasan himself and the Hindi by Sameer. This song has become the favourite of the unit members as well. It slowly creeps in on you and the next thing you know, it is ringing in your ears and escapes as a hum from you.

This might not be to do with music of HR, but I read another interesting news from the HR site - the character Saket Ram suffers from acute illusions showing reclusive behaviour, because the violent death of his wife hits him very badly - to show the chaos in his mind Kamal has used surrealistic artisitic images a la Fellini / Martin Scorcese and for this purpose a top ranking special effects expert from Industrial Light and Magic (!! yes, yes, the same firm that gave the special effects in Star Wars, Terminator 2, Total Recall etc) had been hired alongwith the MANTRA Sotware Company based in RamojiRao Film City in Hyderabad -
Can you all now guess the kind of score IR is coming up with for this movie (right now, he is actually doing it in Hungary !! ) - folks/friends, even to think of it, I find it thrilling beyond description - that too Kamal is using both Dolby and DTS ( I don't know how !!)

Madhan,
Also add to it the fact that for the FIRST time in Indian Cinema, Live Sound from the sets is being used in 90 percent of the film.
So, no man-made effects, no dubbing! Amazing!!

Hey Ram!
Reviewed by Karthik...
Ram Ram
Song on the lines of Manidha Manidha and Vande Matharam. Starts
with Kamal singing "Ragupathi Raghava Rajaram" in a high pitch... and this
blends into the actual song quite well. Rendered with feeling by
Kamal and Shruti.
Impressed me on the first hearing, although my wife who is not as hardcore
as me felt that it was a standard Ilaiyaraja formula for Desa bakthi songs....
although you cannot find exact similarities with other songs he has scored
in the same genre, it still reminds you of those. I loved the unobtrusive
use of synth in this song... compared to other recent IR albums.
Overall, I would rate this song very high on my list. My score 8/10.
Nee Partha Parvaikku Oru Nanri
OUTSTANDING. The song is probably picturized on the lines of "Nee Oru
Kadhal Sangeetham". Starts with some dialogues in Bengali, and then beautifully
blends into the song. One of the very best songs I've heard in years.
Hariharan and Asha sing it quite well, although at times Ashas tamil sounds
lousy. Simple tune, very very hummable. When the song was over,
I was cursing Raja and Kamal for ending it so soon. This song alone makes
the album a must buy. My score 9/10. (I took off one point
for not making the song longer).
Polladh madhana banam
Again, some dialogue at the beginning of the song. Some voice
(sounded like a Patti to me) says something about a Kama banam.... the
song starts of with northie sounding beats. (Rukkumani Rukkumani
like situation?). Very unusual song from Raja. Although the
pallavi is pretty catchy, the song meanders aimlessly during the Saranam,
and the interludes are nothing to write home about. The thing I found most
attractive about the song was Mahalakshmi's voice. Very apt for the
song. But the best is yet to come. Finally the song metamorphs into
a very nice western classical piece, the highlight of the song, and the
best instrumental music piece in the whole album. I would score the
song only 6/10 (for the catchy pallavi and not so catchy saranam) and 8.5/10
for the WC piece in the end.
Vaishnavajantho
Not really a song. Raja's own version of Vaishanavajanatho with
Mirudangam beats ... interspersed with a priest's rendering of Varanamayiram....
Isaiyil Thodanguthamma Viraha
Natakame
Again, very different and interesting tune and again a very apt and
unusual voice. The orchestration was not that great though. Someone had
mentioned earlier that the percussion gaps might be to fill in for something
happening in the movie... but this lent an empty feeling to the song. My
comment : Potentially great song, but the orchestration brought it down
to the "good" level. 7/10.
Ramaranaalum Babaranaalum
When it comes to scoring catchy, and light hearted songs like these,
looks like Raja still lags behind in the late eighties. Right from
"Nadakkuthu Nandavanam" in Nandavana theru, he has been scoring banal songs
like this in the same pattern... the beat sounds like what they play on
DD I when there is a "Sorry for the Interruption" card. A catchier
rhythm might have made the song listenable. Sorry to say this, but Rahman
or even Yuvan would have done a much better, younger, funkier version of
this song. 3/10.
Overall verdict on the album 7.5/10. Good album, the best
from Raja after Guru in recent times, and better than even Devar Magan.
Picturization might make the songs classics. Worth a place in your
CD rack.
Other things of note:
1. Lyrics dont stick out like a sore thumb. Decent.
2. After a long time Raja has fit his tunes to lyrics, and see what
he has come up with. Is someone out there listening
to this?

Neels: Using live on set recording is OLD.. I heard that during MKT days even the songs were recorded while filming. :-). I am sure Manisegaran can provide us more details.
