hi,
In junior vikatan they are publishing an interview of ARR. it started last week & i think it will go upto 10 or more issues. this week there is an interesting Qn. & more interesting answer. I'll try to translate it for U !
Q : When IR was in top of music indudtry., he did music for 4 or 5 films at a time., but he was able to show some variety in songs. none of his 2 songs released at same time will be similar. But u r doing only one film at a time., u take lot of time but the final result -- ??., almost of all ur works look similar ! Why this happens ??
A : This may be due to the fact that i use same set of instruments in all songs with different combinations !
WHAT A 'MAZUPPAL' ANSWER !
DFers., what do u think about this. I think the Qn. is quite valid. for e.g take GUNA & THALAPATHY which are released on the same day. see the variety IR is able to produce between the songs of these films. IMHO ARR is lagging in this & thats why he didn't tried to object the Qn.
UR OPINIONS PLEASE !

srinath:
yes I didnt intrepret 100% the way you meant!
you meant something like one should have highest level of taste to criticize ARR.. which I cannot accept anyday... To me I have a reasonably good taste and with that I find him pretty good! if it not good enough so be it!
'I am yet to come across anyone who has posted any genuine flaws in IR'
I can point out a few things as IR flaws (a lot of people already have)but then you can always debate it. For eg I think IR's music for kalaigan (kamals movie) did not suit the mood of the movie! Kamal is supposed to be a pop star that everybody is raving about in the movie and the songs like 'Kookarako Kozhi' and 'Dingu danga' didnt go well with the movie! what was needed IMO was rangeela type music (I mean stylised music)..
To accept it as a flaw is up to you (basically what you felt about the music).
Likewise people criticise ARR for not composing folkish tunes well.. I like kizhaku cheemayile music and I feel it is very folkish.
Thats what I mean when I say you cannot judge the quality of the music objectively!
If you think I am a IR hater people dont jump in to conclusions!
I think he is one of the best composers around! I watched movies like 'Guna' & 'Mahanadhi' a few times just for the soulful BGM he has given in these movies! I rate his NBW & HTNI as music of highest quality!
But to me music is more just IR.. I think MSV and ARR are also musicians of the highest order... I like some of the compositions of Vidyasagar as well...
Again I fell ARR is ONE of the best composers in TFM.
Srinath, I dont know how I can be more 'reasonable'. To be honest I have been reading this forum for some time but never posted anything before. It was just that I got a little irritated by what I thought as mindless bashing.
Srikanth:
I listened to your album on web. I liked it! Good work!

Vimal,
Why do you need to bring KB, Rajni and others into this matter and term them as "Nandri kettavargal"? And, why do you have to criticize the taste of ARR fans? Actually, this thread is not for bringing up a controversy like ARR vs IR. But it is going on and you are now starting another controversy like KB, BR, Rajni and Kamal became popular only because of IR.
Not even an insane person can question IR's music. IR IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICIAN IN THE WORLD, let alone TFM. WE SHOULD ALL FEEL PROUD THAT HE IS FROM INDIA, AND THAT TOO, TAMIL NADU. And, one can never accept if a person says that 'Daud' songs are better than '16 vayadhinilae". Just by seeing that one person, you can't generalize the taste of all ARR fans. That will start bitter bashing from both sides.
Also, for your information, KB was a popular director even before IR came to the industry. And, his success is due to his skills. You can't attribute his popularity to IR's music for his films. I can list umpteen films of KB that were great hits without IR's music. Same is the case for Rajni. There were some people in the yesteryears who used to tell that success of MGR and "Sivaji" Ganesan is due to the songs (lyrics : Kannadasan). Can you accept it? Of course, music has contributed a lot to the success of MGR, "Sivaji" Ganesan, Rajnikanth, Kamal, KB, BR and co. And, MN is in no way greater than KB or BR. (I don't know how you included P.Vasu in that list... with this can one doubt your taste in movies?). If they had parted with IR, it is because of their personal problems. But, still they have high regards and respect for IR. Forget them, even VM has praised IR for his skills. With this, you can't say they are "Nandri kettavargal".
Don't believe in rumours. There was a rumour that IR had once insulted Mahendran (who had encourage IR so much during his early days). Can one believe it?
All of us want to end this debate. And that is why, I had written in one of the other threads that IR as a MD can be compared to Kannadasan as a lyricist and he is THE MD. But, still people, like Srinath, think as if I am a ARR fan and I am bashing IR and his fans. No, that is not the truth. IR's music is great. No doubt. Now, let's see if we can get good music from other MDs, like ARR, also.

MSK,
Maybe you are surprised by the contrast in the two statements. By one, I just meant to say, myself. I cannot accept that but at the same time it is another person's
opinion. I cannot change it also. So, I will leave it like that. Maybe, my words are very confusing. Forget it. Thalaiva, indha mattera loosela vittudunga thalaiva!!!
