I strongly feel that in spite of ruling the South Indian Cinema for so many decades, Susheela hasn't got the recognition she deserves...
In fact Susheela and S Janaki did to South Indian Music what Lata and Asha did for Hindi films... and yet, they haven't got their dues..
Forget nation-wide recognition (Read: Hindi Film Industry), even the music companies are not doing anything about it.. HMV for instance in Hindi has over the years come out with so many combinations of the "Golden Oldies" like Lata sings for Madan Mohan, Lata with Kishore, with such ans such artist,,, that the list seems endless.
Is it because the "Southies" can not market themselves???
Is there anyone out there listening???

Rajagopal,
I second your views. But, do you think that GOI will honour her with a "Padmashree"? I don't think so. She has done a great job and I hope she will continue to sing. The last time I heard PS was for "Indian" with SPB. Has she sung any other song after that "kappaleri poyachu" song in 'Indian'?

SM,
When LM can be honoured why not PS. I don,t think she has sung any other song after Indian. On the devotional side she has given a cassette "Sakthiye Saranam" ,music by Kanmani Raaja.

Rajagopal,
I think you didn't get my point. If GOI is going to honour PS, I will be one of the many who will feel very happy. I like Chithra's voice but I feel that PS is the best female playback singer in India. But, do you think it is going to happen in the near future? I would say, a big NO, thanks to the politics and bias that exists in the committee that honours artistes. What happened to one of the best actors in India - "Shivaji" Ganesan? (Atlast he was honoured, but after how much years) What happened to India's great music director - Ilayaraja? I feel, that here afterwards, if they want to honour such artistes, they should come up with an award in the respective artiste's name and present it to those people who excel in that respective area. By giving them awards, only the award gets honoured. What do you say?

BTB, thanks for the information on the devotional songs of PS she has sung in Kanmani Raaja's music.

Hi Rajagopal and SM!
If the film 'Devadai' starring nAzar came after 'indhiyan' then PS has given a song after the latter:
'Deepangal PEsum Idhu KArthigai MAsam'.

This is from my recent posting to another thread...
When I met PS in '86 at a wedding in Madras, (I was 15 years old then), I didn't know what to say. She was quitely sitting there and I approached her and introduced myself as her fan. She asked me about my favourite song and I couldn't pin-point ONE. Instead, I started listing almost a dozen songs in one breath starting with 'Azhagan Muruganidam Aasai Vaithen' and ending with 'Thamizhukkum Amudhendu Per'(both from the film 'Panjavarnakkili', starring KR Vijaya and Muthuraman, I think). And she burst out laughing!
She was sweet enough to sing a couple of lines from 'Amudhe Thamizhe' (an IR number). It is one of my most memorable moments! God, all this was happening at a quiet corner in a Kalyana Mandapam. My cousins (much elder to me)later chided me about my 'guts' to ask her for a song!

SM,
I agree. But I hope something comes up. Recently at the programme on Jan 26 in which PS was the main participant she had brought out few cassettes with her autograph containing some of her rare hits. May be I will list out the numbers shortly.

Hi Rajagopal! Are you the Raj that I find in those two other threads which deal ARR, IR and Old songs?
Well, I would be only enticed if you could give me the PS numbers.

Neels,
I guess you are about 35. Considering when you were 15 when PS sang wonderfully for you, which she has not done for, say 20 years, I calculated your age. Just kidding, no offence meant. I know 20 is an exaggerated number.
However, I heard PS (with SJ and others) recently at the ATA conference in Detroit (July 98). She was really bad (and I don't mean it in the 'hood' language).
Prescription :
She should definitely give up singing light music songs in C, C# and stick to non-film music in lower scales like G, A. That also means no more duets.Take these and call me in the morning.

Dr.Music,
20 is a very highly exaggerated number. Besides, it seems, that she performed very well in the Republic Day celebrations and her voice was as sweet as it was 2 decades before. She can still sing in films, may be, not for young heroines, but for amma nadigais like KRV. I would personally feel very happy if I am able to hear to her voice often in films.

DR.Music,
I think you immediately need attention of an E & T specialist first. I would also suggest that you stop taking pills and drops for your damaged ears:-) and start listening to the melodies of PS which came in the late 80's.

Dr. Music,
No offence taken. But I do feel it was mean.
Do you really think one should stop singing in old age? People like Lata and PS need not prove their mettle by singing for 17 year old heroines. But does film music really end there?
Why do you think Lata is still around? I do have my reservations about her singing the fast numbers for Kajol and Preeti Zinta. But, as I said, is it the end of it? Are there not songs that require a mature voice?
I suggest you listen to Lata's songs in the Hindi film 'Maachis'. Do let me know what you think.
Bye,
Neels

Neels,
The comment about PS was made mostly in jest, but I am quite serious that she should reduce her scale so that she sounds comfortable and melodic (if that is an accepted word). Regarding LM I feel very strongly that she should stop singing in high scales (which is what unfortunately the MDs require for younger heroines). Regarding your comment about Maachis (without conceding that it is any good since I have not heard it) the list of songs in which she sounds really bad is virtually endless. Don't you think that there are tons of other singers who could have sung these songs better. Listen to Jiya Jaley. The chorus singers sound much better than the main singer.
Don't say mildly that you have reservations about her singing for Kajol and Preeti Zinta. That is what she does 99% of the time, and I have MAJOR problems with that. In fact, she could be contributing her own little piece to the demise of HFM (not that it needs any from her) because her songs have to be 'simple' and 'routine'.
Lata, Asha, Suseela, Janaki WERE the best in their fields during their prime. But today age has caught up with them. When they try to sing, THE TYPE OF SONGS which they sang in their prime, they sound horrible. And I have major problems with that. If you still feel that it is MY problem, then I guess we have to agree to disagree and leave it at that.
having said this, I have to say that PS and SJ are not singing playbacks (especially for younger heroines) too frequently, so they are not committing any offence in my books.

anadaum,
I agree with you. I will like to talk about the song 'nenjinilae' ("Uyirae") and 'jiyajale' ("Dilse"). The Thamizh version was by SJ and the hindi version was by LM. I feel SJ did more justice to the song than LM. Or, SJ sounded better than LM in this song? At the same time, I would say both their voices didn't suit Preethi Zinda.

Well, I think everybody would agree with you SM that SJ did better than LM for that song. Well that song is not made for Preeti but it is an experiment by ARR to use LM in his songs but I think he will avoid LM forever after this lesson.
To day we hardly find songs that suits actors/actresses so let not talk about it.
