Friends
I have watched few movies like Alaipayuthe ,Mudhalvan and latest Tenali ,the BGM score was interesting in the sense MD plays the instrument version of the songs as BGM.
Every MD has his/her own style i think this will be the latest trend for BGMS.
This means either the MDs are too busy or too lazy to come up with some interesting BGM or it is their trademark style your thoughts on this.
Did the concept of BGM was there in 60s i mean they used to have a band play the bgm or a same set of bgms for eg for pathos one type and for horro or thrill one type and these same get repeated in different movies.
My work is done here i will leave it to the experts

i enjoy instrumental pieces of the songs in bgm...depending on the film and how the song will be presented.for example love stories yes i think its a great way to do bgm.because it gets u hooked to the song before it comes time for the actual song in the movie and makes it all the more enjoyable.also with patriotic type songs.as u hear the instrumental version of the song, it brings out a real feel good mood once the actual song is played with picturization.for example jana gana mana.

hey here is the most haunting BGM piece of IR that shook me recently
the Climax of Sethu
Vikram enters the house - A string starts revealing the confused mind of Vikram on seeing gralands at the door steps
Vikram shocked on seeing the house like a marriage hall- A strong stroke a classcal percussion with solo violin and veena in less tempo following
Vikram walks fastly inside the house - veena played at high tempo (my favourite piece)
then dashes a door - a lot of violins and keyborad rhythms revealing the extreme confusions
and sees abitha dead - a big stroke and silence follows
a true master piece of IR i have listened so far

Climax of Kadhalukku mariyathai
Shalini distributes the juice to each - a sweet melodious solo violin playing a classical note
and shalini is about to deliver the glass to vijay - silence
she starts moving towards vijay - a bass flute palying the tune of the lines "Thathalikkum manamae" from "thalatta varuvaala" song ( a haunting piece that enhances the visual)
then after conversations where silence is maintained in the BG
Srividhya says "eva enga veetu ponnu", three strokes to show the shock on each one's face
then everyone is happy on the decision and shalini cries and hugs her mother - a sweet complex notes with lot of twists is played with flute
this flute piece sounds all the relaxed minds after so much tension of what would be the end
a great BGM again by IR
