Sangamam is a pathetic album...no doubt about that!
I am not at all "carnatic-literate", so to say, but somehow IR's carnatic compositions never failed to make an impact on me. ARR succeeded in "Narumagaiye" and "Ennavale", but "Sangamam" is a laugh!!

Hey! Listened to "Sangamam" yesterday. Except one, all the other songs are just OK. "Vaaraga.." is a classic song. The tune is really nice. Kudos to ARR.

Michael Jackson will dance to A R Rahman's tune
[Courtesy: Asian Age] (Jun 99)
Deepali Nandwani/Mumbai: POP star Michael Jackson will now dance to the synthesized tunes of Indian music director Abdul R
Rahman. The show, to be staged in Munich, Germany, on 25 June, will be choreographed by actor-dancer Prabhudeva. The
occasion: a charity show organised by the Hindujas -- the non-resident Indian industrialist family based in London -- in aid of
UNESCO and the Nelson Mandela Charity Fund. Telugu actress Shobana will give a Bharatnatyam performance with Jackson. The
proceeds of the show will be used for the treatment and rehabilitation of AIDS-infected children.
The Hindujas are responsible for getting Jackson to not only stage this charity show, but also perform a few Indian numbers. It was
on the insistence of Srichand Hinduja, the patriarch of the family, that the pop idol --- dressed in Bollywood designer Manish
Malhotra's black-gold creation -- attended the Bollywood awards night in London last month.
Incidentally, Malhotra is also designing the costumes and the look of the show. He says: "I am honoured that Michael thought of me
to do the outfits the second time. I will give him a little more dramatic costume this time around since he is going to be performing on
stage." Malhotra will be using fire colours -- orange, yellow and beige -- for the set and the costumes.
The song, composed by Rahman and choreographed by Prabhudeva, is called Akam Satyam (There is only one truth). The dance, a
mix of Bharatnatyam and other classical Indian dance forms, will revolve around the theme of God being the only truth.

Kitcha thambi- If we start comparing, we will end up nowhere. Let us take each of them individually. My experience with Sangamam:
After the fiascos of ESK, KD (I'll talk about this later), I had decided not to buy any more new albums, until I was completely satisfied by listening to the radio.
However, a colleague gave me his Sangamam cd, saying the music was not to his liking. That he is in his late 40s, is another matter. :-))
At first listening, I quite liked it, which is quite interesting, considering the fact that the last time I felt like this was for the Jeans album.
After listening to the album quite a number of times, I think that ARR has indeed done a good job, and if he is a trendsetter, then it is good for the industry.
The songs are classical based - imagine songs of the 50s and 60s, with a modern touch. Should please people like Kanchana & Sathiya Keerthi.
Who is this Shankar Mahadevan? He sings the song with ease. The song is an interesting fusion of S. Indian classical and bhangra - The Thakka thakka thom is very catchy.
I could even tolerate MSV's voice in Mazhai thuli mazhai thuli. ARR has done a careful camouflage. :-))
S. Janaki is in her ARR best in Maargazhi thingal. The echo sound gives the song a religious fervour. Remember Raatha azhaikiraal? Similar effects. Anyway I am biased on any song in praise of Kannan. :-))
ARR has used a variation of drums, from tabla, mridingam, gadam and such. Quite interesting album and definitely worthy of reopeated listenings for people who like this kind of music.

What was wrong with ESK? I thought you liked it, except for the JUMBALUKKA and NIAGARA songs?
THEEDAI and THIRAKAATHA KAATU are good. In Sangamam, Janaki's and Nithyashree's songs are nice. But Nithyashree's tamil singing was not so great. But other than that, there wasn't anything in it that was better than ESK, don't you think? But one thing though, the lyrics in sangamam are more pleasing then ESK.

Aruvi - What's wrong? Staying power!
Okay, I won't write another essay, at least not for now.
Theendaai was good, minus the erotic beginning.
Pls. note, I have nothing per se against eroticism, but feel like it has its own place and time. For comparison sake, certainly not when you are reciting Suprapaatham. :-))
But you can't really compare ESK with Sangamam - both are very different.

Did you notice that for almost the first two minutes, Nithyasree was just singing Soukiyamaa kanney soukiyamaa :-))
This song had a great mix of traditional drums.

I do agree....you can't compare the two...
I did notice that Nithyahree sang Sowkiyamma for a long time, though I believe the two minutes had the musical intro in it. But in a whole I would say that the lyrics for sangamam didn't put anyone in discomfort. I don't think a lot of people would try to sing 'kaadhal niagara':-))
Velai illaathavarE
I don't know who your question went to although I have a feeling it was directed at me. I am fine, thanks, and hope the same for you. In my opinion, Nithyashree repeating Sowkiyamma had nothing to do with the quality or lack of lyrics. I had thought, maybe you have a better idea, that it was just to add some more carnatic flavour to the song since in carnatic songs words and lines are often repeated.

Aruvi - Staying power means wanteing to hear afte a while.
Kavalan - My initial reply remains. Why should we compare? Especially with an agenda?
Would you compare Thillaana Mohanambaal with Salangai Oli? Pointless, right?
