Hi
I dont think it will be economically viable for any music company to release BGM CDs for any movie - whether it is of IR or ARR .. I dont think the indian music market is mature enough to take such stuff !

Good point V
Even films Sindhu Bhairavi, Roja, Hum Dil Dhae chukae sanam bagged National award for best music based on the songs alone and not based on BGMs also.
Thats y films like Hey!Ram are overlooked.
May be we have to rely on Radio to cultivate this habbit in us. I particularly remember Ilangai Vaanoli's "Oli chitram". They used to broadcast shorter version of the movie (1 to 1.5 hrs) in 2 or 3 episodes. i still remember how i was repeating dialogues of "Alaigal Oyvathillai" in my early years. Ilangai Vaanoli use to broadcast this movie many times.
But im bit sceptical about it because of this current MTV mindset people.

You are correct. The award is for songs alone. In fact Ismail Darbar tuned only the songs for that movie. BGM was done by somebody else.

ur correct...for awards they r hearing to the songs alone...
and IMO...BGMs r the ones which give life to the characters in the film...for instance...a horror film without background scores...wud be comedy
one..bcos its the background scores which brings effect to the thriller...
and..if they start taking BGMs also with the songs into account for Awards...then it wud be end of roads for other people to bag the Awards...bcos...v can hardly count on people who can score good..atleast decent background score...for that matter ARR very much lacks in the BGM part...

"for that matter ARR very much lacks in the BGM part..."
Guys:
ARR can score a good BGM if he is given atleast 1 year time. Probably, this period enables him to around various sources and think what he can do best out of it. Then the stitching job starts and to finish one decent coat set (i mean the songs and bgm) it will take atleast 1 year.

on: Thu Jan 4 13:48:54 EST 2001
I am really surprised to know that BGM is never considered for film music director award (that Hindi MD scored only the music...)
Then this policy is not correct. Ridiculous...
They can rename the award as Best Film Album...

Subbu
One should not expect anything not ridiculous from the committee which decides on awards. Rating something as good is a very subjective phenomena. So these awards actually mean nothing. Just because they liked something, you may not like it.
But the Indian Film committee has lots of jokes to its credit. MGR winning the best actor, while Sivaji has none. Another comedy is 'Best Lyrics'. I am totally at a loss how they go about deciding whether an Assamese song is better than a Malayalam song or not.

Doubter,
You posting echoes what I feel. In simple words, it is 'Politics' that decides the awards than the real merit.

Bhavadharini is another MD from IR family. Entire family of IR are MD's. May be this is an distinction in TFM.
http://www.kumudam.com/lightsonline/mainpage.html
Click on 'Seithikal' section and scroll down. At the right hand side there is a news which says that Bhavadharini is the MD for Revathi's film about Women.
And there is a a review about Pandavas on the 'Lighs on' section. It says IR added life to the movie from the beginning.

As many have rightly pointed out, BGM in Indian Films are just backed out. Infact in Hindi,BGM is given least importance.
In western countries, film music mean just BGM.
A person perofoming a great BGM, is greatly appreciated.
Oflate IR is doing extreamly well in his BGMs.I was thrilled to hear to the BGMs of Kaalapani,Hey Ram, Guru, Bharathy & Paandavas.
Even in his earlier days he had given great scores in Johney, Alaigal Oyvadillai, Mouna raagam, Aan paavam, idayathai thirudathey ..... etc.
I think, it is right time,he should come out with a series of instrumental albums, by remixing some of his own best BGMs of to date, in DTS effects. (Like 'How to name it'.)
Will IR Fans encourage him to come up with such project? CRAM Pl.try to convince IR & say him about the site.
Will any great company sponsor for the project?
Veekay
Will
