News about 'Paandavaas' in today's THE HINDU newspaper :
"Illayaraja has apparently enjoyed composing the background score, taking care to pay attention to the most minute details. The Pandavas is scheduled for release across the world, in the near future"

Pandavas movie review
- From: Balaji (@ 199.67.138.20)
on: Thu Dec 28 14:32:24 EST 2000
Pandavas Review:
One more insipid review by S.R.Ashok Kumar in the Hindu... If the movie has been technically so good, all he could write was ....
====>There are competent professionals in the film industry===> to make it work excellently. The screenplay is written by Sujatha Rangarajan who has done his homework. Music
====>>by Ilaiyaraja is another highlight. Editors Lenin and V. T. Vijayan have essentially worked to speed up the
===>narrative to the maximum...
What a waste!! These people should never been given free tickets....
It looks like a 5th grade student doing a comprehension on a good Novel/Art piece.., where he/she would use thesaurus to get the adjectives, but fail to express how the Novel/Art affected that person...
Totally disappointed/Frustrated...

Hey balaji:
Cool. May be this guy (Ashok Kumar) has just seen the wall-poster and written this review. It neither tastes nor benefits.

Hi!
Just read the review and the reviewer has indeed praised the movie. What do you guys want? 2-3 pages praising IR with all possible adjectives in the dictionary?
Have you guys seen the movie?
- From: Velai_Vetti_nothing (@ 64.208.81.180)
on: Thu Dec 28 16:29:27 EST 2000
yes, you are right.
bgm music is the most vital factor for a movie, especially an animated movie.
flifo,
yes ashok kumar is useless guy who dont know music, we should email hindu online, I wish hindu adopts email system like tfmpage.
we can push pandavas to the top
like we did for "friends" :)

Velai_Vetti_nothing,
Do you want to see Thenaali on the top of the charts? or anything other than 'Friends'?!
Balaji/Fliflo expected detailed review of music too. (That means criticising too!). Instead they can have a format a movie like below.
Name of movie: xyz
Actors: x,y,z
Director: xx
Photography: Ok/Good/Bad
Music : Ok/Good/Bad
Lyrics: Ok/Good/Bad
Direction: Ok/Good/Bad
This is also review. Do you agree on this format? There is no need to bring in anti-x, anti-y feelings here. This applies to both ARR and IR fans too.

There are so many English cartoon movies. I wonder what percent of the movie reviews are devoted to the music.
Expecting a detailed review of the BGM is one thing, but berating the reviewer in strong terms is another. All this even after the reviewer has clearly praised IR's music!

Comments i take those comments from Balaji as chidding the reviewer for giving worthless comments on all aspects of this movie. this chidding has not come out because he did not praise IR. If I see Balaji's posting it quotes the entire review (i think) in such a way as pointing out the defect in the entire review, in general. See, the equal stress given on sujatha, technicians, music etc (in balaji's quote). Do u really think this review makes u to either see the movie or not to see it?

He need not praise the music, or any other artist.. but he could have told in a line what kind of music was used. But its just could have. Tell me how many times in a review about a english movie do they talk about music at all?.

English movies normally do not have songs?!
- From: Jag (@ 35.9.48.96)
on: Fri Dec 29 20:16:13 EST 2000
they do have a soundtrack which is reviewed on par
with the movie. They usually play some songs as background songs in a bar or some place like that.
I can give two example
1)Beverly Hill Cop II
2)City of Angels , also dirty dancing, saturday night fever etc and so on..

I would like to make a clarification...
I am not upset because SRA has not praised the music.. He has hardly done a good music review ever in his career in The Hindu.. But what really did upset me is that him writing that it is a technically superb movie and still write such mundane words as 'has done his home work (Sujatha)'; music is the highlight (IR).. and hardly specifying what made it the highlight of the movie...
I would have least cared had he given such a eview for movies like 'Ilayavan', 'Kanna Unnai Thedugiren..' (both By IR) and other movies which god knows why they are ever produced...
When u have a ground breaking movie taken, for god sake the reviewer should try to give more detailed description. I believe it is his responsibility...
My major complaint is that the reveiew was written without passion for such an important Indian Movie...

friends
i was chatting with ramya kannan, who wrote the first review of pandavas in hindu, and she told me that the only world-class element in the film is raja's music. she was praising it skyhigh and wondered why if raja can deliver a world-beating performance, the others can't. hasn't that been raja's problem all through his career?:-)))

a couple of weeks back, i spent a day at prasad studios at the background score recording of Friends. editor lenin also landed there after watching a preview of pandavas. he told raja that the music was tremendous and that everyone who watched it had great praise for it ("engeyo poyitteengannu sonnanga"). and apparently, he has touched new heights with the score for pandavas. hopefully, he will continue to give great BGMs in future too.

Will Raja ask the producers to come up with a CD, 'Original Motion Picture Soundtrack' like Hollywood films? It will be a 110 minute treat, I am sure!
Cram, can you convey this to Raja please? It's very rare to have a film with no songs... and we, his fans would love to have such special scores!
Thanks

Background music has a greater part in animation movies (usually meant for children: interesting to see grown up people fighting over it). This is true of English movies, listen to Bambi, and then to some action movie like Die Hard - music has more importance in the former. There are not a whole lot of dialogues, but a lot of music.
So, it is not surprising that fans expect good work from a music director 'even though' it is an animation movie.
Someone can come up with a different pair of English movies other than Bambi and Die Hard and say music is of more importance in one than the other. Therefore, these views are strictly IMHO.
