I heard that IR/GA used the works of Henry Daniel, a piano player, in the 70s and that several of their songs were his. Can someone clarify? Who is this Henry Daniel?
Thanks in advance,
Rajan.

Roy, 'pAduvOr pAdinAl...' has a very long, diffcult to play piano prelude which is not available in the radio version. Hats off to Joseph Krishna.

Listen to the piano classics in film melodies mentioned by the sensible few in the thread. Only then you will understand the truth.
There are hundreds of songs which came later with piano and piano based key boards, with no meaning to the instrument.
There was a oliyum oliyum in Chennai Doordharshan with full of old and new film songs. It was a testimonial proof of successful piano playing in tfm, as to which was good, when one answered his CONSCIENCE!(FYI "Thenmadurai Vaigai nadhi" a Rajini starrer had Prabhu playing the Piano and a kid watching next to me asked "Where is the piano sound?", that was the prominence of Piano.
You do not need a Trinity college degree to compose for tfm as agreed upon by its graduates, who are MDs now and feel that they have wasted their time in tfm. Why cant they produce a musical film showing their capacity, without any interferece from the directors or producers and dedicate a movie for Pianoforte?

Badri,
I agree with you. Henry Daniel played most of the songs in light style. He is comfortable playing songs holding Fat chords in right hand and take the bass in left hand. He is very good in rolling arpeggios. But whatever he played cannot be considered pure classical way of playing. It does'nt matter. For Henry Daniel's style of playing it is not necessary to write Trinity College Exam. But when you take the exam, you'll have an idea about classical music and your fingering will be correct. Henry Daniel's style is surely God's gift. All
classical pianists cannot play in his style. lot of his styles comes from his heart.
You'll find Henry Daniel style of playing in 'Lawrence Welk Show' telecasted in Public Television every Saturday. If you live in USA, you'll enjoy this show.
I love this show because all the performers participate in this show are extaordinary musicians.

To all those emerging members of the HD fan club
Aha! Now you found the perfect stick to flog IR! Just the right mix of drama (openly insulted), pathos (poor senior...passed away), and sentiment, that's drawing closet IR-baiters (many still dressed in drag?)like flies to an oilpaper.
And in the melee, the absurd and outlandish enjoy free flow...
1) "It is more important to compose & perform tastefully than to graduate with distinction and do nothing for piano in tfm" - A singular vignette of Sridevi playing the prelude of En Vaanile (Johnny) has done enough for piano in TFM than all you guys would collectively get around to doing constructively in your lifetime
2)"Why cant they produce a musical film showing their capacity?" Should we just laugh this off, is this even worth an answer? Arul, your last few words are prophetic
3)"There are hundreds of songs which came later with piano and piano based key boards, with no meaning to the instrument". Did you listen to all of them with the mute button on?
Guys, I appreciate your respect for Henry Daniel, great pianist he was, and share your profound grief at the fading away of such legends from the TFM scene. But pls., for the poor man's sake, don't haul him over the coals to find a fresh reason to start your anti-IR tirade..
Did I hear any of you piano-afficianados sing paens to "Niram Pirithu Paarthen" from TIME?
a non"sensible"

Suresh,
I am sure "niram piriththu paarthaen" and "nee paartha paarvaikku" (Hey Ram) were both played by 'John Smith'. IR had no say in it. That's why those tunes turned out to be as majestic as they are.
I get the feeling most posters on this thread prefer 'piano concertos' to songs. That's the only way to give 'real importance' to the piano and only to the piano.

PS.
What started out as a well intentioned tribute to a great musician has turned into yet another 'free for all' on Raja.
....and then they accuse the Raja faithfuls of being fanatics.

Rajas faithfuls - please dont try to pervade in all the forums and stuff-in Raja unnecessarily. It is ones own right to discuss various styles of Piano playing. The senior pianist definitely did a lot for tfm without a degree in Trinity college.
What is the use of repenting now! It is too late to contribute for tfm with piano ( even with John smith - What IR couldnt find any players in and around, Kollywood, Mdaras, TN, Trinity passouts etc.,?). He started with alien singers, musicians and now pianists!

Hello Henry Daniel's Grandson, Nephew, Son, Son in Law, Great Grand Daughter whoever it is..., by any chance if you read this message, please write to me your e-mail address. I'd like to ask you few questions about HD. Your help would be appreciated.

Henry Daniels name came out in news with the release of Pudhiya Paravai, when Viswanathan Ramamurty conducted a special press meet and introduced him to the press "as the man behind the arrangements for Engey Nimmathi and the man behind the Piano songs". It is great and magnanimous part of being a Music director and real musicianship.

I remember watching a movie. In that, actor Mohan played a pianist's role. I guess music is by Shankar-Ganesh. Piano works were great in that movie. Can someone tell me what movie was that? Did Henry Daniel played piano for that movie?
The story goes like this. Mohan, a pianist marries a singer. As usual everyone will be interested in that lady singer(??) (I'm really bad in remembering heroine's faces and names!) but not him. He becomes jealous... I don't remember what happens next!!!
any clue?
I have even noticed real good piano works in K.V Mahadevan's music.. I'm pretty sure that they must be by Henry Daniel.
Thanx
Naveen

Admin,
I started a topic 'Background Piano Music in TFM' long back. I checked the archives, but it is missing. Is that thread still alive?
Thanks
