Hi Vijay,
What you say as pure reetigowlai is in my terms - equivalent to a song in reetigowlai with very little expansion - not expanding the scope of the raga.
IMO, difficulty in raagas lies in expanding their scope/making them light but still to be able to say that it is reetigowlai. It is a matter of definition. To me, as long one is able to zero in on Reethigowlai for a song than that is the raaga for the song.
This purity issue comes into picture because, Carnatic music apart from its strict definition of raaga (with all gamakas etc) does not define these gray areas.
Personally I feel such songs will go a long way in providing a wider definition for the raaga instead of narrowing it down.
Shashi,
Please comment on this viewpoint. Moreoever I am into collecting all songs of ARR and IR which go thru the shifts like you mentioned in Pennalla song.
For eg. in En kanavinai when Magarasa seemaiyile starts and when ezhai nenjil kodi aasaigal starts isn't htere a beautiful shift.

Shashi: After my first listening of 'muththamizhE' frm raaman abdhullaah, I also felt tht its a kind of 'remake' of 'sorgaththin vaasap padi'. OR atleast I felt tht there exists a similar IR song.
Vijay/Shashi: I second ur thought re. Key Board killing the essence, depth, beauty of songs these days. I feel songs with KB/synth instruments doesnt seem to fade away in me very fast. Im hunting for those old acoustic guitars and I feel they still sound fresh: Recently I came across, 'pon vaanam panneer thoovuthu innEram'.. oh boy! Wht a use of guitar.. All special effects were brought with just acoustic guitar and we can even hear the strumming/plucking sound of strings too apart frm the chord itself.. And it adds to the mood/taste. Similary with 'naan paadum mouna raagam'. Use of KB-instrument vs original instrument had stuck a balance in the song : poovE iLaiyya poovE, sugam tharum ... There is flute piece where original & synth are mixed well.. And its ages since I heard the original drums! Is there anybody still using those good old drums? 'dEvadhai iLam dhEvi ennaich chutrum aavi' had an excellent drum... And where is our conventional mirudhangam? 'poyyillai kaNNukkuL thee vaLarththEn..' had only mirudhangam as accompaniying instrument. naadhaswaram : en kaNmani en kaadhali, poongatahvE thaaz thiravaai.. still refreshin. KR's naadhasawaram in 'enekenna raasa' (manickam) sounded entirly different.. There was no feeling 'kambeeram' in that. is it due to digital/quantizing or KB?
I feel, Key Board is a japaneese bomb, killing our traditional instruments.. Like a slow poison, it slowly bringing down the domination of original instruments..
And ofcourse its my feelings...

Hi Guys,
I disagree with Keyboards killing original instruments, it is also an instrument, it is a technology, proper usage of keyboards will make a song look good, whats happens is - over usage of keyboards due to financial and time constraints, most tend to get irritated - also keyboards are used very best in India only in the South Indian film music, North litrally misuses the great piece of instrument.
Everything depends on the composition - there are poor acoustic compositions and good keyboard compositions.
Take for example Ninukori varnam - majority of the score is on the keyboards, Since the compostion is too good, it sounded good and we were not worried by this factor.
After this song Raja has used keyboards of most his bass parts.
ARR mostly use real bass for most his bass parts, he uses Fretless bass often (Kieth Peters one fo the best in the country, plays for him).

Hi Pee Soo
Good old drums. Last heard them in the song 'Kannan vandhu paadugindran kaalamellam' from the movie Rettai vaal Kuruvi. Try listening to it carefully again! It just creates so much joy when you hear the original cymbals and kettle drum being played wonderfully by Shivamani (I guess?)
Let Raja bring back Shivamani and the original 'Tama' (a brand of drumset) and you can be assured of a pleasing melody that will stay forever!
