hi guys,
For me spb is the best bcos he is an all rounder/versatile and conquered tfm 4 a long time...But some are saying that upcoming singers like HH and UK already reached spb's stature and maybe better than him...What are your comments??? I am a fanatic fan of this great spb..so my fellow fanatics, plz e-mail me if you want to discuss more abt spb.....

See dear manithan:
1)Cool down. Dont use bad words
2)We are talking about SINGING - not music direction. In any case, Rafi has composed nearly 10 private ghazal albums, KJY is a classical singer too, so it is evident that the raagas are expanded spontaneously in his performances. Kishore has directed music for 4 Hindi and 9 Bengali movies.
3)In terms of singing, KJY,SPB,Rafi are the TOP!!

· Till date there is no statistics or any musical reasons to say rafi is better than spb.
· spb is the unquestioned ruler and emperor of indian film music songs. there is no doubt about that.his voice is god's gift and no one on this soil can come near to him. what sivaji ganesan is to acting, spb is to singing.
· SPB is in a class of his own. Comparing him with "also-rans" like HH & UK is purely idiotic.
· it is a fact that spb is the greatest ever singer in India with rich collections of national and other awards.nobody can match him in modulation,voice,variety,multi-linguality,numbers(already guiness record holder),singing span(more than 35 years and still number one).rendering large number of songs in beautiful, graceful and difficult south indian languages without any error is very very difficult and he even made non listeners of carnatic music to hear through is wonderful sankarabaran songs where is voice richness and modulation matched those of even great carnatic musicians.for us spb is the greatest of all.rafi may be equally great , it is only a matter of opinion. i am concluding this topic

SPB sang very beautiful in Illayaraja's Swarnakamalam - koluvai, ghalu ghalu & siva pujaku.... are absolute treats.

SPB's voice is better than m.rafi, we should consider the artists voice as well, Yes M.rafi is eqaul to spb in singing abilities (well except shankarabaranam), to be honest M.rafi sometimes sound too soft(feminity), but SPB's voice, well I never heard any voice superior 2 SPB in indian artists.

1)Whose voice is superior is matter of PERSONAL opinion.
2)U cant imagine Rafi in Shankarabharanam. Well the same is true the other way too. U cant imagine SPB singing Rafi's Mirza Ghalib ghazals, can u?
3)To see the manliness of Rafi's voice hear the foll
-Zindabad zindabad - Mughal-e-Azam
-sar par topi lal lal - with Asha in Tumsa Nahin Dekha
-hae re hae yahin jazbaat - with Asha in Kahmir ki Kali
-ye desh hai veer jawanon ka - Naya Daur.

SPB had a better manly voice, than of M.rafi, I have heard alot of Rafi's songs, SPB's voice is deep & power full, have ever heard any songs where SPB sings in low pitches, it is very very deep, typical example (shankaraparanam), other example in Karna, the song "malare mounama", when he drags that "malareeeeeeeeeeee", it is the most manly & deep voice, i have evr heard, what an awsome voice, but nowdays there is 2 much Feminine voices like HH,UK,srinivas, do not u agree?

I disagree :-)))
If u hear those songs I have mentioned, u will not say so. Esp the ghazals that traverse the lower notes very well.
Else listen to "duniya na bhaaye" from Basant Bahaar. Listen to how he say "charanon mein" in one stanza - really deep and lovely. I can go on like this!! :-)))
Also listen to Hariharan's ghazals. Many of them bring out the bass of his voice very well.

First of all let me make it clear that UnniKrishnan has the best bass known to IFM. Just kidding! But seriously, Rafi's bass is not very deep. He hits lower A, at most. SPB's voice is a bit more bass though he too is mostly a tenor. Do we really have any true bass voices in IFM?

On some other thread, I had read an extremely eloquent article by u about KJY.
However just one point - not denying that KJY and SPB are both excellent in classical idiom at all,
Rafis classical songs are mostly rarities.
Rafi and Lata had a longterm association with a composer called SN Tripathi. His classical songs are just treats. And there's an absolute plethora of those. I feel sad for MR,MD and LM that they never became famous.
If u can some day, do listen to rafis and Manna Deys songs in those mythological movies and many others like SangeetSamrat tansen, Rani Roopmati, Jai Chittod......................
And AdinarayanRao once composed in a few Hindi movies like SurajSundari. Here Rafi sang with Lata - "kuhu kuhu bole koyaliyaan". Thats another great song by Rafi. Also I heard a Malkauns pice on radio - "ankhiyan sang ankhiyaan laagi aaj". rafis taans are great here.
And Rafis ghazals (the ones on musicindiaonline) are a proof of his lower notes.

what are u saying about that KJY's voice is the bassisest, thaaaaa!!!, that is the most stupidest thing I have ver heard in entire life, did you lsiten to shankarabaranam,( do u know what it is???), that song in "sa re ga re gama tha ba", bloody hell spb vopice is very deep & beautiful!!, not even balamuralikrishna has that sort of bass, about kJY, althou KJY is extremley talenten singer, he severely lacks bass.
but spb has the bassiest voice in IFM!!!

Can you please direct me to the thread in which I have written about KJY ? konjam maradhi jaasthi enakku :-) And sure..upto an extent I can give a listing of mallu songs of KJY, but I think forumhub would be a better place for a discussion of this sort. Please check the malayalam film music thread in there.
Believe it or not LV, I grew up listening to KJY most of the time..and that is 24 yrs :-) I know his career is probably twice as old as I am but I think I have been a witness of the transition in his voice for a good number of years. Anything that came after 95, will not be my cup of tea. I do have a lot of examples to quote where he strains / struggles.

It was on the thread "Mohd. Rafi is the greatest singer of india". Yes, u had mentioned quite a few of his songs there - and I've heard and liked all of them. Thats why.
Anyway, In Bharathi KJY sounded pretty good - anyway no args. The only singer who has become unbearable due to age/poor health is LM. She for me is the ultimate form of the musical note (from 1942 upto around 1992 only of course, with one or two exceptions thereafter). Thereafter she has become a sadist however. Many of the veteran singers like SJ,PS,Asha,KJY have voices that have faded, but they are still listenable.

yes..In Bharathi there was not any "difficult" song to sing. He sounded good BUT if u stop to listen attentively to "oppillaadha samudhayaam ulagaththukkoru pudhumai" and the sharaNam, u can find how strained his voice is. Another example is the line "vendhu thaNindhadhu kaadu"..The vibrato in the word kaadu is too punctuated and deliberate. It does not sound natural but strained.
Listen to "edhilum ingu iruppaan" from the same movie by Madhu balakrishnan. IT is a classic reminder of how KJY would have sung the same song some years back. Absolute gem !
U may mail me if u wish to get a concise list of mallu semi-clasical songs of KJY.
