bala,
Do you need ONLY MP3 versions to 'COMMENT' on the songs 'later'? Will Real Audio files given above not do?
;)

Seems an international edition of Lagaan OST is making the rounds abroad! It supposedly has 3 added tracks, one of them sung by Aamir himself called 'pritam...'!
Anybody has more news on this one?

Guys,
My brother saw the lagaan promos in DD2 and he is 100% sure that it is another "Naadodi thendral".
He says that especially an english song in the film proves his point. I have not seen it and I have only once listened to some 7 songs of this film. They are really good and different. It will take some time for me to pass a judgement on this album. It's a good start.
Flifo:
Friend.. This is not a topic of your taste. Come on. Lets discuss about music on some thread which is of common interest to both.

Mmm..I felt the same when I watched the promo tapes. I think that the British girl loves Aamir but Aamir loves the Indian girl and she Him. This is evident in the shocked look the British girl gives when Aamir dances with the Indian girl for the 'Radha...' song. But I think that only the love part is like that. Otherwise, this is a story of villagers revolting against discrimination.
BTW,
My favorite songs are the 'Megha' song and 'Mitwaa'. Too good. But ARR uses the same percussion beats in the former song as he did for 'Velli nilave' from Jodi. I couldn't identify at first and then my sister pointed it out. Can someone see if that's right.

Yes, that's true. But the tune is entirely different. Both the songs are based in same raag --malhaar - i think. I mentioned this in my earlier posting.
The song is about rain and the raag also symbolises rain.

Guys,
Here is my other guess.
Mitwa song is the "Aathi idhu vaththukkuttam" of NT. Just direct your imagination to both these songs.
I think Lagaan is actually a remake of NT. I will be much much more happier if it is not.

From rediff on lagaan:
"In the song, there is a British girl who learns Hindi in the film. But when she is expressing her emotions alone, she does so in English especially when it's about love. Rahman mixed a Hindi song with an English one so well that one does feel they are two different songs. He has managed to make it sound like one song," smiles Aamir.
Admits A R Rahman, "It's quite a complicated song because the hero and heroine are singing a folk song, and we had to get into a completely different melody. So we used an English phrase which would also go with the Indian audience"
If only ARR had listened to kaadhal paattu dhaan paadikko paadikko from nadodi thendral..but this a good effort too.

Amirkhan was in Chennai for the re recording of Lagaan...Those who saw the raw version at the time of re recoding say it is very similar to Nadodi Thendral with the difference the hero is a former instead of Aasaari and heroine is a village bellie and not a Gypsy....a.a.

When I heard the Waaltz beat and the WCM oriented song, I couldn't help compare the film with Bharati Raja's Nadodi Thendral.
But apparently the main crux of the movie is lagaan, the name given to some kind of Land tax. And is set in the drought-hit Kutch. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the 'romantic angles' have been lifted from Nadodi Thendral. Cos, The director Ashutosh Gowarikar's debut film Goonj and the ones that followed, 'Pehla Nasha' and 'Baazi' were extremely unoriginal and mediocre and borrowed heavily from Hollywood flicks. I don't think highly of him as a director/story-teller.
Let's hope he does a good job with Lagaan.
MS,
You are echoing my sentiment. IR has done stuff like this umpteen times., even in films that do not have any 'firang' characters, be it songs or BGM.
CF,
The kAle Megha song is not just similar in beats, even in the tune, it is very very close to Velli Malare, not just because the raga is the same, but the tune itself is. I had earlier in the same thread given the links so you can see for yourself.
At least let's hope that the good Song, BOl Sajni (hindi original of Velli Malare) gets the attention it deserved this time in its new avataar.
The title song, Lagaan, mostly instrumental with a quiet Alaap credited to Anuradha Sriram followed by a Choir kind of singing and some folkish chorus is quite good. Anuradha's alaap part reminds me of the tune, Then Kizhakku Cheemayile from 'Kizhakku Cheemayile'. But the song is multi-layered and is very rich. I love it.
It's a quality album from ARR, no doubt. And I am sure Sony Music will do a good job of promoting it. But I hope the wretched HFM critics and half-baked reviewers in the Bombay press do not keep singing the same tune: that Rahman is too caught up in style, is repetitive, that the sound is Techno, non-ethnic and too sophisticated, that the tunes are complicated etc. And toast the Anu Maliks for their excellent 'melodies'!!

Neels,
The term Lagaan, the land levy tax is brought in to show the British presence in the movie..Othrewise Iunderstand the story line goes.....Popular village farmer hero.his lover, tax imposing cruel British collector, his beautiful British sister on vacation, falling in onesided love with rebel farmer hero.....Still the movie will become hit as the Hindi audiences have not come across a GRAMATHU film after Viraasat...A.A.

Neels:
I have listened to "bOl sajni" some 100 times. The tamil version I did not tend to hear much. Hindi version had very good lyrics and I liked the hindi one very much. Regarding, "kAle mEghA" song, I still maintain what I said. Again, its individual perception. Atleast this time this perticular song should be a hit. "bOl sajni" song did not get the recognition that it deserved.
Also, its good to see that people agree with my view that Lagaan might be a remake of NT.

by the way you didn't say anything about the song itself, common friend... don't you feel the resemblance??
- From: Neels (@ 203.199.87.3) on: Tue Apr 10 06:48:20 EDT 2001
Rahul,
I do see some resemblence, but I wouldn't term it a recycle. What I did notice was the fact that ARR has used the same theme tune of the WALTZ song in the 'Oh ri Chori' number, in the Vasundhara Das part, singing, 'I am in Love'.
By the way, where can I find the English song sung by Shubha (MAlgAdi) in Bharati Raja's 'NAdodi Thendral' on the web?
There's another rustic song sung by Malaysia Vasudevan, 'Elamala kAattukkuLLa' in the same film that had an excellent beat and tune.
The film has PAndiyan, Ranjita's murai mAman singing this number after finding out Karthik and Ranjita's 'connection'. Also it's through the course of this song that the English dame finds out that Karthik is 'booked' and 'hooked'.
An amazing, but largely ignored number.
- From: kiru (@ 192.138.149.4) on: Tue Apr 10 11:33:26 EDT 2001
Neels,
That song is available on raaga.com. The song sounds like an 'oldie' because it is a 'classical POP'. What Rahman has done in Lagaan is a animation picture song.
