Hey, I am listening to "Kale megha" from Lagaan and I am listening it for some 10th time. I got a sound system attached to my system temporaryly (Cricket match has helped me).
The song seems to resemble the "bOl sajini" on beats. The song is based on malhaar raag I think. Even in the lyrics, I think, there is a reference.

ya.... its beat structure is exactly like bol sajni in parts... in fact the "ghanan ghanan ghan" chorus bit in the beginning is exactly from bol sajni... I don't know much about malhaar except that it was supposed to bring rains.... so, it is probably understandable why ARR chose to repeat the tune exactly even in this high profile movie... Assuming that the chorus bit is in Malhaar raag...
BTW It is an amazing song!! I've already listened to it more that 30 times after I got the mp3 yesterday evening... Thanx Karthik for telling about the link!!! :-)

Yes, the song seems to have been picturised on some rainy sequence. You can get that in the lyrics. I found the tune to be much different from DSR but, traces of similarity is obvious. Any way seems to be a good pre-build up for Lagaan music release on April 6th

Interview with Rahman on http://www.hindu.com in the feature section under personalities. A short article, nothing new. He is going to do a special appearance for the Banyan Concert happening on March 31, in Chennai. It is not anything like a full length concert but I expect that the instrumentation for the music portion of the show will be good since ARR is going to be on stage. Hopefully:-))

The first two lines of the song of the "kale sagha" song sounded very similar to an old MSV tamil song, i think from the movie Bharatha Vilas.

RAdha Kaise na jale is a sure fire hit.
There's a lot of Western Classical stuff in the album. Possibly because some of the characters in this period flick are Brits.
Vasundhra Das' bit rendition of 'I am in Love' in the song, 'O Ri Chori MAn bhi le bAt meri' reminds me of a similar situational song in Bharati RAja's 'nAdOdi Thendral' (I am not comparing the tunes here). The story seems to have a Brit female lead who is possibly in love with the hero, who in turn dotes on a village belle.
Except for the song 'ChalE chalO', based in raga JOg, sung by ARR and Srinivas, which sounds superfluous, modern and IMO, lacks some punch (mainly because of ARR's singing ; how I wish a Sukhwinder or a Folk artist had sung it), its rustic words notwithstanding, all others are very good and very traditional, and create the 'mood' of a village during the British Raj.
We can expect ARR to sing the above song 'live' in his forthcoming concerts a la "Dil Se Re").
An album the composer can be proud of.

Another Taj mahal for Rahman:
"Perhaps as big a draw as Rai will be Taj Mahal 's soundtrack, to be composed by A.R. Rahman. Bala and Rahman have been close friends since childhood, having also collaborated among other projects for the patriotic songs collection, Jana Gana Mana"

Gandhi won Oscars. Is ARR eyeing on one ? Wish him good luck.

Good effort from ARR. The picks in my opinion are the waltz piece (simple yet beautiful) and the title song. The melody in the title song seems dangerously similar to one of his earlier compositions but the accompaniments are very good.
As far as sheer melody goes, O Rey Chhori probably wins, except for the English part in the middle which is also fine except when the two are fused together.
O Paalanhare is a good prayer song. The other songs made no impression.

let the songs grow on you man.... ARR deserves at least that much I think....
almost every song of ARR seems not very impressive initially...
but wait some time and suddenly you find you can't live without
them..... give Lagaan some time... By the way what happened to
Man Shan Shan??? seems they have cut the song from movie as
it was getting too long.... :-( that's really saddening...
or maybe they'll release teh song later... as a new attraction in new cassettes...
as they did in Alai Payuthey... anyway.. it is disappointing that we might have to miss supposedly the best song of the album... at least for the time being...

Rahul: Many people here say that. To me, that isn't so. I liked almost all of my ARR favourites on first hearing itself - atleast enough that I was tempted to give repeated hearings. On the contrary, I gave "1947 Earth" atleast 5-6 listenings - no effect. I am always surprised at this. Ironically, many IR songs appeal to me only after repeated listenings, contrary to the way it affects most people.
Still, I'll take your suggestion and listen couple of more times.
