Hello friends,
It's me again. And this time, I met IR alongwith another newtfmpage regular, CSG. Unlike the previous occasion, when there was no scope for a chat, today we sat and talked with IR for about...god knows, time stood still, guys. We have no clue.
There were so many things we wanted to ask him, but in his presence, both of us were tongu-tied. Finally CSG found his voice and complimented him on his latest album, Bharati.
He's so incredibly down-to-earth and accessible. And he doesn't spout profundities, but speaks just like you would expect any layman to. That's his greatness. I'm still on a tremendous high....

madhan,
in an interview to the hindu a long time back, IR had also mentioned this (in fact he gave 31 tunes). singeetam and kamal then settled on the first tune that IR composed and the song became an all-time classic. wonder what happened to those 30 other tunes!
in contrast, for Time, IR gave the director 30 tunes for the entire film. two of them turned out to be damn good.

When P.Vasu explained the story and song situations for his mega movie "Chinna Thambi", IR threw out 6 tunes in a matter of 20 minutes and all 6 were OKayed by PV. This was revealed by PV himself in a TV interview after Chinna Thambi's silver jubilee function. This is IRs musical spontaniety. The success of all the songs in that movie proves why he should "polish" as you said, when he can deliver the BEST in the first instant. ARR had told sometime back that he took 14 days to compose the tune of "chikku bukku chikku bukku railu". In my opinion what ARR does is "polishing" the sound effects of the songs rather than its melody. You get the best sound by "polishing" and need not be best song/music.

SL,
Touche.
Guys,
As we're wildly going off the topic here, let me add some insider stuff I know because my friends were active producers, distributors in the 80s. Back in those days, IR would play about 5 or 6 tunes and the Director would have to pick from those. I very much doubt many had the courage to ask for alternative tunes or that IR had time to play 15 songs for every director. If there were more than 6 songs, I'm not sure how many more IR played for each director considering he was doing 40-80 movies during certain months. He wasn't even around for most recordings, his assistants did the recording based on his notes. That's how busy he was in the mid 80s.
But, it's a damn shame this thread is also doomed to go towards the inevitable clash. If IR were to sing for this situation, "Indha threadum pidikkalai, DF pidikkalai, bore borudaa".

Kannan Sir,
You've put it right!! "Polishing" can only give us pleasure in terms of sound quality (high bass and pitch, suits all frequency range) only also if we are lucky enough to own superb amplifiers and loud-speakers.
The lifetime of songs of this kind is till the release of the next of the same. But if we were to listen any songs for years (like Nilave Vaa from Mauna Raagam), its actually for the melody.
But in this context, ARR have also provided us with some beautiful songs like Thoda thoda (from INDRA). I hope not to compare IR & ARR, at least musically!!>>

Mr NVD,
what u said is almost correct, but have u noticed the amount of movies done by ARR so far..? i think is not even 1/8 of what IR did. And now u can see ARR get tired ready and can't give good melodies such as u mentioned. u can notice these from ARR's latest movies. Now he no more give concentration on melody, what he wants is make the songs hit by covering the songs with music.
it's not indicates a good work from a young music director. hope u can understand....!!!

Does IR have a web site dedicated to him? If not why cant we assimilate one. containing, of all, the experience of the elivated rasikas like us.
Definitely, that could be one of our ways of expressing the musical ecstasy though not a complete one.

yahoo.com
Regional > Countries > India > Entertainment > Music > Artists > Composers > Ilaiyaraaja
has only 5 entries.
there should be atleast 5 more. Go to add them.
No doubt he makes the best music and he got the best of the fans.
Also imdb.com doesnt have His movie list, That also have to be added.

To Gobi,
The reason that ARR isn't doing too many movies lately, is because He is workin' on Bombay Dreams for Andrew Loyd Webber. Also, he's trying to bring Indian music to an International Level.
ARR is not a Xerox machine like Deva to keep putting tunes out.
Also, Quality is very important to me. I buy CDz not tapes, because of the quality. I just want the best possible sound.

IR should be back in India in about a month's time. till then, i guess, you'll have to wait. but u can start preparing the questions:-)). my contact told me that IR did visit this thread and having gone through the postings, wondered why i hadn't asked him what i wanted to. so, the next time i meet up with me, i'm sure i can put them across to him.

alaghu,
my source is as reliable as can get, because it was through him that i got to meet IR in the first place (he is a long-time friend of IR's). moreover, IR called him in chennai from the US and asked about me and whether i was the one putting up all this stuff on the net (to think IR remembered me...pullarikkuthu). so u can rest assured the info is absolutely true.
only when IR is back here can we really get to know what he has in store for his fans. till then, "saththam illatha thanimai kEttEn"...

IR is not back as yet. the only major project in the pipeline is a big-time telugu film. maybe we can persuade him to start on an interesting project:-))
