P.Susheela was moving away from Tamil movies in the early 80s but was in full swing in the telugu movies at the time. Even some of the old sjanki songs in tamil in the 60s was just because of non availibility of dates of psusheela which could be
checked with the music directors. for eg all songs in the film sumaithangi was sung by sjanaki just because psusheela was engaged with some songs
in telugy movies.
some how she was lucky to be singing in kannada songs where illayaraja was working as an assistant to mr gk venkatesh . then started sjanki periods in tamil.
by now she has completed 15000 songs when compared to psushella who has completed 30000 though almost both of them started at the same time their carrer.

dear readers,
it is bad to compare one singer to the other.each have their own style of singing.p.susheela is no doubt a great singer but you should also not forget the fact that s.janaki is more versatile than her and the whole south knows that.when it comes to modesty one cannot come near janaki amma

PS is the ultimate in light music. Dont even compare latamangeshkar with her. PS's voice clarity can never be matched by any person for that matter.

To write about P Susheela's achievements is like comparing her to Jessye Norman in Opera. A great mezzo soprano, P Susheela is a legend with respect to Film Payback Singing. Her contribution to Playback Singing is unparalleled in terms of her varied styles, be it sad, joy or maelocholic. I have been listening to her earlier debut songs from the early 50s, but I can tell you this for sure...you have to listen to them again and again to derive listening pleasure. Dating back to the era of G ramanathan to A. Rahman, her singing abilities were endorsed and well appreciated including Illayaraaja. Though she had collaborated with him for over more than 250 songs, second after S Janaki, one can observe the quality of songs composed by him for her. It was written somewhere that he treated her with great reverance. I will be contributing more.....

PS has sung 148 songs for IR.
SJ sang 900 songs for IR.
Its there on the Illayaraja site.
Janaki is much more versatile than PS.

In my writing, I have decided not to compare P Susheela with S Janaki or Vani Jayaram. They all are talented singers and very versatile, each with their unique singing abilities. Here we are discussing about the contributions of a legend in tamil film music. In fact I do like all singers, no matter what their origins are. Again the numbers might not be correct as they are not final numbers. There are some songs which have not been added. I know that the numbers in totality could be around 210-230. She is an extraordinary singer who had almost completed 50 years (its a pretty long time for someone to remain in their field) with a touch of sadness, joy, and humanity. A great song "Malai Pozhuthin Mayakathile" from Bhagyalakshmi has been admired by IR himself. Yesudas, a great fan of P Susheela had annointed her as well.

VJ is definitely no comparison for PS - please. VJ lacks good modulation - also she is too loud and shrill

Again I have never compared PS to SJ or VJ. Read my piece carefully. Just a digression...One should listen to Vani Jayram singing "Enullil engo Engum Geetham" from Rosapoo Ravikaikari composed by IR. It was in the beginning of 1979/80. I wondered how someone could compose such a masterpiece and chose perfectly the soprano to sing the same.

Nothing, VJ is an ordinary singer. She is just too loud and lacks emotion, fineness.
Also her voice is not very sweet.
PS is the QUEEN of tfm.

There is no doubt about that. I would say she is a legend. In fact PS is a great mezzo-soprano TFM ever produced. You can read my earlier piece and have endorsed that idea. I think I am being misunderstood. She has been singing since 1951. One should listen to her earlier songs in "Sangham-Telugu Film" (in tamil its AVM's PENN)composed by Sudarsanam. Though Jikki, Pleela, TV Ratnam were leading singers, she still rose to that position by her magical voice, which was later on acknowledged by Pleela herself. The only singer to have collaborated with all composers except CR Subburaman (I am not sure..may be she did). I was looking for one of her gret songs "Mannava Vaa" from Adutha Veetu Penn, composed by Adinarayana Rao. Swara does'nt have that.

i am a greatest devotee of p.susheela infact i started listening to telugu music only after she stopped singing in kannda movies which is my motherland. janaki is a wizzard no doubt but don't forget suheelamma not only reached uno slot but has stayed there for all these years by her sweet voice.even making janaki to accept susheelamma as her genius when two women are in same proffesdsion for more than 40 years and from same state rivallary is mount to happen like lata&asha. any fan of suheelamma can mail me and exchang informaiton i amready to join the fan club of susheelamma. any body please. composers like vishwanathan -ramamurthy, k.v.mahadevan, chakravarthy, vijayabhaskar, sathyam, m.rangarao. they all belived only in the voice ofp.suheela neither janaki nor any singer hardly mattered even ilayaraja had susheelamma in his mind it is some reason that he opted janaki nor else it would have been susheelamma allthe way in i.raja 's music. ask his kids they are all susheelaities.

Krishnakumar....I completely agree with your views. I have been researching all her songs since 1951 in various languagesd. If you have looked at my piece I have mentioned that IR and Gangai Amaran are great admirers of P Susheela and had colloborated with her in a very special way. Its true that SPB and SJ are ardent devotees of P Susheela. She is not only popular with south indian composers but also with north indian stalwarts such as C Ramachandra, Naushad, LP and has worked with them. She is the only one to have worked with all the composers till AR.
