V (i dont know who you are...)that was funny!...so you found me. :))
The same committe will soon turn into a group of genius! do you know how --- hey ram surely will fetch few wards. :-)))
Dennis cool down!...
"Can you please tell me what exactly is ARR's contribution to music in general and to Tamil
films in particular"
last year, I asked the same questions on raja here, do you know no one could reply!.
You have the answer in your argument itself
"Taste is relative" ---
Yes my 10 year old nephew hates Ilayaraja, he just loves arr, so what can we do about.,
many here dont know what g.ramanathan or msv/tkr has done!...:-)))
Frankly like you I tried to correct people but it does not work out. I learnt this after having a real tough time here. (thanks to few who corrected me!).
Best way will be for raja to get awards and close all this arguments,
Many have come to a conclusion that getting awards in india is very very easy. Rajini got! it....wow how easy for rajini, just need to call vajpaiji and zoom - it is given to him.
We all know from the talks here that raja is also politically very popular!.. ..he can do it more than anyone else and makes us all happy , many feel geiunue musicians are not given awards in India,
it is ok (or Dharmam) to try through back door.
What do you say ? :-))

Mr Denis,Good to know you are a musician too.Believe me,A.R.R.s contribution to music is immense and he has proved it by changing the face of Indian film music. He is a true trend-setter after R.D.Burman and I.R.He has his own distinctive style which is very important for any orginal composer.Well,if you want to discuss these issues threadbare we shall do so when you visit Madras next.Maybe I can find a producer for your compositions if they are good. Mr Srikanth, are you by any chance singer Anupamas cousin. In which case give me your e-mail i.d. Think I know you.

Vilayat Khan declines award
CALCUTTA, FEB. 7. Sitar maestro, Ustad Vilayat Khan, today refused to accept this year's Padma Bhushan on the ground that it was a belated decision of the recommending authorities.
The septuagenarian sitar wizard regretted that his name figured in the list of awardees much later than some of his juniors in the world of sitar players, who had been honoured with this civilian award years back.
``This is an insult to me. If there is any award for sitar in India, I must get it first,'' he said alleging that the Sangeet Natak Academy had been influenced by lobby, politics and favouritism while deciding the awardees.
``There has always been a story of wrong time, wrong person and wrong award in this country,'' a visibly enraged Khan said at a crowded press meet here.
Pointing out that sitar and its `Parampara' had seen the longest ever tradition in his family and his ancestors had chiselled the `Gayaki Ang', crucial to the playing of the instrument, Khan said no other `gharana' was older than his in this arena.
``Four generations, both from my paternal and maternal sides, have made sitar their religion and today the entire nation is copying our work,'' he said.

Well done Ustad... If an award is not given at the right time, it just looses its value and meaning and you have done it right.
Another shining example of the panel's incompetance at judging and honoring people.
Jai hind..

It is true that ARR is a musical genius and he does deserve national honours of this nature.
He got the same in a very young age.But I really do not understand what is the consistent methodology in giving such awards like Padmashree, Let us confine it to music alone for the time being. Generally, I have observed that these awards come to a person after he gives continuous and consistent contribution to the discipline. Examples are KJY, .SPB ,M.S Subbalakshmi etc . I am also not very sure
who are the other Tamil music directors who got Padmasree. But if they have already not got it, I
feel people like Ilayaraja and M.S.Viswanathan deserved it long back.So also I do notice that there is a male domination taking place when it come to the question of Padmasree Awards. While I have lised KJY and SPB AS padmasree
receipients, can somebody point out any of the contemporary female singers who got a Padmasree? I am sure that there are many who really deserve it.Can somebody share their thoughts on this?

To the best of my understanding, "titles" like Padmashri, Padmabhushan and Bharata Ratna are national honours bestowed on "citizens" for their contributions to the country, its people, society as a whole, etc. These titles are not given for being the best actor, best singer or MD. In contrast, the national "awards" given out every year for various categories are for being the best in their fields that given year. The "Chevalier" award that Sivaji Ganeshan won from France also falls into a similar category. ARR winning the Padmashri or Ilaiyaraja not winning it has nothing to do with their musical capabilities. Similarly, Rajni did not win Padmabhushan for being a great actor, but for his overall contributions to the entertainment/well-being of the masses. Needless to say, political motives and considerations do play a (small) part in the selection process. There was a big contoversy about Ravi Shankar receiving the Bharata Ratna last year.

Dear Srikanth,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately you have wrongly attributed my ealier impression about ARR's songs to my prejuidice against ARR and to bias in favour of IR. I am not a fan of any body. I do not just let myself be carried away by 'storms'or waves of music. When it suits my taste I enjoy and when it does not I do not just continue to listen to it. I would like to make an observation in your posting here. You have said that you have tried to ask people what exactly is IR's contribution to Music and nobody so far has answered you. If you have come to a conclusion that IR's contribution is nothing very unique to Tamil Music just because there is no one who has answered your genuine querry I think your conclusion will be unfounded. As you have said if we meet in Madras we will have a good discussion about it. I have reflected a lot about IR's and ARR's unique contribution to music. I have analysed IR's songs and their relevance and correspondence to the mood and theme of each movie and the type of instruments and sounds he has used for various situations in Tamil films. Unfortunately I have not put them down.I am sure I will have some time to do that in future.
Taste is relative but unique contribution is not relative. It cannot be aribitrarily discussed. It is not an aesthetic question. It is rather a technical question. From the technicalities of music one has to decide about the uniqueness one's contribution to music. I am sure you will continue your reflection along these lines.

Denis!
I think Srikanth himself has listed out around 10 of IR's unique contributions in the same thread, finally! So, IMO, he is not an adverse critic of IR but a promoter of good TFM, including that of IR!

"ARR winning the Padmashri or Ilaiyaraja not winning it has nothing to do with their musical capabilities"
What is your point here. What reason other than 'musical capabilities' could have anything to do with ARR getting a padmasree. To my limited knowledge there isn't a big contribution by that gentleman in any other sphere of life.

Padmashri award ellam sambhandam illathavangalukku thaan tharuvaanga. Original tune podaravangallukku ellam thara maattaanga. Adutha award 'Deva' saarukku, SA Rajkumaarukku. Ippadi.
Forgive me if I am wrong.
Man of acting : Shivaji - did not get award
(MGR got it and so too Rajini)
Original MDs : IR, MSV, KVM (as far as I know, nope).
There is an article in www.numtv.com (goto Kungumam in the magazines section) and you see an article about the copying skills of ARR. (It mentions the source of 'Humma Humma', 'Thillaana..') and few more super duper hits. That article was an extension of Kamal's answer to one of the chat questions.

STS,
Since Sabesh Murali composes BGM for ARR, he
is next in line to get an appropriate award
like Padma Bhushan etc. Diamondu missed a
wonderful opportunity because of his recently
reported feud with ARR and for now he will be giving new titles to people (like Isai Perarasu to Deva recently).
Also MR who introduced ARR is sure to get
a suitable award soon(like Dada Saheb Phalke award). Since MR's films are consistenly flopping now, this award is the appropriate one for him(request to retire soon without troubling himself/people further with his Mumbai, North East/ Kerala based love stories).
