Iam not too sure whether harini's voice would suit any heroine. Her voice sounds like that of a 10 year old kid and manisha looks quite old in the stills. SPB still manages to keep his voice and excels in the song 'azhagaana ratchasiye'.
The lyrics have reached deplorable levels, thanx to vairamuthu. other than this one song none of the other songs are even worth listening to a second time.

I didn't intend to shout by making a posting with capslock. I thought for people like you it gives better readability, as you are still awaiting for the newly ordered spectacles.
PBS
You are a very senior person, I can be your grandson not mama. Please don't use our respected PBS name for making such false postings. No one needs woooo any MD's all of them already know about golden voice of our PBS.

Sorry for the digression, No more PBS discussion in this thread till the new ARR's album comes out with our great PBS song.

Did anybody notice ARR's use of hollywoodian style of chrous BGM in Mudhalvan? To be more precise, listen to The Omen or First Knight by Jerry Goldsmith.
Also, has anybody noticed how maestro John Williams' score towards the end celebration in Phantom Menace resembles that of our maestro's many chorous works?
The above is just to quote but one.
IR is truly a genius indeed. Amen.

Hi Ambleen
Are to talking about 'BGM' as in re-recording in the movie or in the 'interludes' in the songs.
If you are talking about the interludes please
read my review on Muthalvan songs. I mention the
chorus/church pipe-organ stuff in 'Muthalvane' song that is similar to 'the Omen' stuff.

btw, Did anybody notice 'kurukku chiruthavaLE' is similar to the Hindi number :
"jub jub thEri
soorath dhEkoo(n)
....
jaanE jaanaaaa
OO ! jaanE jaanaaa"
from a Anil Kapur & Dimple movie. Is that also set in the same raga (Vaasanthi) ???

Hello thathuvavaathi!
I have not heard the hindi song you mentioned. Is it available on the net. If yes, please send me the link and I will give a ear to it.
BTW, although there is strong shades of Vaasanthi in 'Kurukku..' there are other notes too. Infact the opening lines of the pallavi are in very much in Mohanam (song starts in lower octave Pa)

shades of vaasanthi ? To me the song appears to be a deliberate attempt to combine the melody of three great ragas :
(1) Mohanam
(2) Vaasanthi
(3) Shivaranjani
One good song of IR which comes to the memory when I make this comment is "adho megha oorvalam". Though it does not embrace shivaranjani, it does add vaasanthi to mohanam for imparting a stronger melody base.
Though a good effort, I feel it is very much inspired by "Pardesi Pardesi Jaana nahin".

Shashi,
When you talk about ragam Vasanthi, does the Ilayaraja song "Nallavarkellam satchigal rendu"(Movie:Thyagam) also set in the same ragam? Some portions of the charanam in "Kurukku siriththavale" seems to be similar to IR song.
Let me know your thoughts.

I am sorry to have included shivaranjani in the list.
I was confused between "Pardesi Pardesi " and Kurukku chiruththuavaLE. It has shivaranjani. I once again apologize for my comments

Hi Ramkumar Perumanam
Just sitting here thinking about "Nallavarkellam satchigal rendu" song, it seems to be mostly in Mohanam, atleast the Pallavi. In the line "nambikai vaithu kallaiyum paarthal, deivathin katchiyamma"..the musical note at 'deivathin' is M1. I do not hear a D1 (in my mind and hence no Vaasanthi). Also, I do not recall the Charanam currently.
The superficial similarity with 'Kurukku..'is because of the notes of Mohanam.

Hi everybody
I had rated Muthalvan better than Tajmahal
and also predicted which would do better.
These 2 reviews also seem to agree with me.
http://www.themusicmagazine.com/mudhalvan.html
http://www.movies.satyamonline.com/content/review.asp?movie_id=141&langcode=tamil
Infact, the music magazine.com also picked
Kurukku as the pride of the album. Note my
raving about the sarangi is also mentioned
here. Since I do not yet have a cassette or
CD of Muthalvan, I did not know the Sarangi
player. They seem to think it might be the
great Sarangi Maestro 'Ustad Sultan Khan'

MUDHALVAN... The film is very good but some songs like kurukku, alagaana ratchasiye & uppu karuvaadu is not suitable for this film & BGM is very poor ..What happen to ARR....???

Isn't tfmpage an 'internet magazine' wherein patrons are also contributors (in keeping with the principles of democracy)? ;-)

Shashi,
A belated thanks for your belated review of "Mudhalvan". Thanks for taking the time to give in-depth reviews here, your reviews stand tall amidst the constant verbal grunts. The only change I would make to your song grading: subtract a point from each song because of VM's lowly effort.
