Friends,
This is just to bring out a list of recycled pallavis in songs. Let me start with one IR no. (Please keep in mind I'm an admirer of Raja). He did a great tune `Pookkal Sindhungal' in one listless movie. May be to popularise the tune, he used it again in Thanikkattu Raja - Naan than toppu, Meethiyellam Dooppu'. ( The funniest part of it is this: ARR recylced this same IR tune twice- in Indian (Maya Machheendra) and in Kaadal Desam (Mustafa Mustafa)
More such numbers please!

sudhakar,
The reason for the similarity in kanavu kANum has been discussed so many times before.

How about these songs by IR?
1) Kanmaniyae Pesu Mounamenna Kooru... Kannangal iru Rojapoo... ---> Kakkichattai
2) Engae En Jeevanae Unnil Kandanae. Ennai Thandanae.... ---> Uyrnda Ullam?
3) Or Vanam Padi Unnai Nadi Manjam Thaedi .... ----> Sadhanai
Category II
1) Nan Sirithal Deepavali... hoy.. Nalum engae Egadesi.... Andi Malarum Nandavanam naan... ----> Nayagan
2) Pari Jatha Poovae Anda Deva logha therae... Vasantha Kalam Theril Vandadu.. Manmada Raham Padi Vandadu... hooooooo -----> Movie name I don't know.
In fact, there are lot of songs having such tunes reused in ARR songs. In fact, From Roja and next movies immediately done by him will have the same pattern of 6 songs with different tunes slightly modified from one movie to next. Deva always has this property. His first song always will be one Dappanguthu.... In that respect, amidst such long term, IR maintained much deviation or atleast tried avoiding reuse of tunes. I think, MDs after a cycle period, loose their charm due to exhaustion of their tunes. Is that right? Any views?????

Possibly, Vel, possibly. In arr's case, this cycle seems to have reached its starting point now. IMO, he started sounding repetitive as early as Bombay..possibly, even before..I dont remember.
Raja has for most part tried to be innovative and different. But he is not completely innocent of ceviations, I accept. But if you notice, there are so many classes of repetitions, as you observed, and with different sets of time-intervals, as you pointed out with two classees.
Afterall, Kakkichattai, UU and Sadhanai were quite close to each other chronologically.
So, it is not that after a cycle,Raja started recycling. There are occasions always when he has recycled but at the same time in the same period he has had amazingly, new, innovative scores.
Like, initially he was dubbed as a folk-specialist. He didnt stop at that. He went on to master every type of music.
In these twenty four years, there has not been a single time span where he has got boged down. He has alwasy been evolving . Why? Is he some special creation of God? I am inclined to think so...whether it is the poorva jenma punniyam of Chinnathayee or Ramasamy or Raja himself, he is gifted beyond the levels of ordinary mortals.
Even now, he is trying to be different and innovative ...Kaathal Kavithai, for all its plack of appeal cannot be accused of previous influences . I didnt like it but thats a different issue.
i wonder if he'll ever fall prey to this cycle business!I hope he doesnt.
Some less serious stuff now:
Even Deva is not all that repetitive- Initially, he copied Raja. Then, Rahman. Then, all and sundry. So, as long as he is able to discover newer and newer sources, I think he'll keep giving us new tunes , without recycling..So,t heres another exception to the cycle rule:)

hi.,
Eventhough Deva gets new sources regularly., he is not an exception to Cycle rule. I have 2 pairs to prove my statement.
1. 'semparuththi semparuththi poovaip poola peNNoruththi' from VasanthakaalapaRavai
& 'senkuruvi senkuruvi kaaramadai sengkuruvi., ' from ???? ( which film ?)
2. 'kavalaip padaathe sagootharaa., ' from Kathal kottai
& 'whitelagan kozhi oNNu kuuvuthu., ' from Priyamudan
can u feel the cyle now !?

I repeat here like how IR repeated his tunes in..
kannan enna sonnaan siru pillayaey - from Saaindhaadamma Saaindhaadu------with 'Ola kudisayiley' from 'Orey oru gramathuley'.. a ditto copy of his own notes.
Aayiram thaamarai mottukkaley - was repeated as 'koduthu vaithavan koduthu vaithavan maapillai thaanadi' from some vijayakanth movie which I forgot, and also in Udhayageetham as 'maaney thaeney katti pudi, maaman thola thottukadi'.

Folks, there is a song in 'brahma' - ival oru illan kuruvi which is an exact copy of a similar song in 'idhayam' .. i havent seen the movie 'brahma', nor do i know which movie came first but just wondering if the situation required the same tune or was it to popularize the tune?

'maalai soodum vELai, andhi maalai soodum' second interlude violin strokes plus KB sounds similar to the 'How to name it' number "Do anything" [Theme music which comes in veedu also].
digression: btw, The track titles mentioned in the recent [two/three years!] release of "How to name it", [Oriental Records-CD and Echo cassettes as well] and the actual track which comes in the CD/cassette are incorrect. Did anyone notice it?

The following is not a 'Tamil-in-Tamil' recycled song.
I was listening to Rex's Rare hits of IR and came to this song from the movie "Amman Koyil Kizhakaale" which starts off as 'chinna mani'.
Well, there is an exact same tune in a Telugu movie called Chalthi Ka Naam Gaadi (that's right, it's a Telugu movie title) and the MD for it is also IR.
Since the other songs in Amman... don't match with Chalthi..., I presume the movies are different and this song is probably a 'recycle' case.
Also, I felt that the start of 'Povva Eduthu' from the above mentioned movie 'Amman Koyil...' kind of resembles the song in 'Muthal Mariyadhai' which goes like 'Yeh kili irukku'. IMO

Nagasubramanian,,
Recycle is synonymous with Deva.. He borrows (lifts!!) it from all and sundry and also recycles his own numbers.. Hes Anu-Malik of TFM!!

Hi Anu,
Are you referring to the song "Chalti ka Naam" in the film "Chettu kindha pleaderu" *ing Rajendra. Prasad?
Others, sorry for the digression

Anu:
The name of the Telugu movie isnt "Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi", but thats how the song goes:
The song goes something like:
Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi
Chalakivannu Lady...
The Telugu movie came much later than Amman Kovil Kizhakkale.

Hi Srinivas, Bhoori
You are very very correct. Chettu Kinda Pleader IS the name. Sorry for the mistake. I was not thinking when I posted my note.
Thanks for letting me know that the Tamil version came first.
Apologies for the digression...

Hi Anu,
If you have heard the song, then you would have noticed that the song you mentioned is a great tune with some out of the world flute pieces- I am glad that IR gave it in Telugu or we would have missed out on this masterpiece.

Maya Machindra (!?),
what song in Idhayam are you referring to, wrt 'Ival Oru Ilankuruvi' from Brahma? AFIK, Brahma has two songs set in the same tune; I think the other one starts like, 'Engiruntho..'.

hey guys,
Doesnt the song from the movie karnan "mannan engae" and the song from the movie shatriyan "maalaiyil yaaro manadhodu pesa" look similar?, is it because that the raaga is same or what?.
